Why do so many US series get cancelled and leave us dangling?

Where has Once Upon A Time Gone?
Thirteenth floor cancelled.
Dracula cancelled
Penny dreadful cancelled.
Fast forward (which was a brilliant idea and well acted)

I am sure there are tons more. I now rarely bother with US series!

I think they are so keyed into making money they stretch out a good idea forever in case it's a hit and when it's not as popular as it should be they cancel. Much better idea to compress the idea into a brief series (note Sherlock) rather the this TV teasing.

Revolution. also made by the Lost people. It wasn't great but it stopped on a massive cliff hanger.

And I loved Heroes.

I'm also Sad about Dallas.

Jbck · 01/11/2014 23:02

Noelle was it shown in the UK I searched for it for ages as we knew it was coming back but never found it?

BumGravy · 01/11/2014 23:17

wakeywakeyteaandcakey I thought Ugly Betty ended properly after many series?
I liked Tru Calling too.

BumGravy · 01/11/2014 23:23

The Riches was also good and cancelled halfway through a series.

whathaveiforgottentoday · 01/11/2014 23:39

Heroes was great when it started but it just lost its way. I wasn't surprised when they cancelled it. It was like the writers hadn't planned that far ahead and were making it up as they went along.

I know its not cancelled in the US but I am missing supernatural.

Boysclothes · 01/11/2014 23:42

I can't believe no one has mentioned deadwood. I for one am still grieving.

ladybird69 · 01/11/2014 23:43

Firefly such a travesty Hmm
Moonlight a great vampire story only one season!!! And Fast Forward, why do they stop making them and carry on with rubbish programmes?

ladybird69 · 01/11/2014 23:44

Oh and was it Everwood or Evergreen? Ended abruptly too.

dillite · 01/11/2014 23:53

Once is still on. Penny Dreadful will be back for season 2 too.

Cocolepew · 02/11/2014 00:00

All 7 seasons of Recue Me are on Netflix now. It did disappear from Sky rather abruptly.

SpuffySummers · 02/11/2014 00:13

Tru Calling, Dead Like Me and Firefly Angry

shakes fist at stupid networks

Whiskwarrior · 02/11/2014 00:31

Another for Carnivale here - dark, spooky, fantastic acting, beautifully made and cancelled after two series with a massive cliffhanger! I'm still cross about that.

And yy to Firefly. Simply having Serenity does not make up for it, especially as Nathan Fillion is now looking not nearly so hot in Castle.

We missed the end of series three of Once so we're about to start it again on Netflix and hope they start showing it again on terrestrial tv at some point.

I may just delete Penny Dreadful from my sky box now I know it's been cancelled - I forgot I'd series linked it and noticed it there (way down the list!) two nights back.

BOFster · 02/11/2014 00:41

I'm so glad I didn't bother with the US version of Life On Mars- it lost viewers and was canned after one season with a ridiculously dreadful finale, apparently.

Part of the problem is that they use teams of writers who work on the hoof, rather than sticking with one auteur with a particular vision. They are too tied to ratings and immediate audience responses, so nothing is allowed to develop properly.

dillite · 02/11/2014 00:43

Whisk Penny Dreadful will be back in 2015 for season 2. I just watched a trailer promoting it.

Whiskwarrior · 02/11/2014 00:47

Ooooh ok dillite!

Maybe I won't delete it then - I might get round to watching it at some point Grin

sleepdodger · 02/11/2014 00:50

Pan am Blush

FlossieTreadlight · 02/11/2014 00:51

Deadwood - I loved it and they just ended it after three series. Same re Firefly, Tru calling and Carnivale - beyond irritating that they were cancelled.

BOFster · 02/11/2014 01:07

Deadwood was brilliant. It did end properly though, it wasn't left hanging. There was talk of a film, but it didn't come off Sad.

sandgrown · 02/11/2014 01:10

I really liked Brothers and Sisters!'

MrsCakesPrecognition · 02/11/2014 01:17

I was really sad when the plug got pulled on Studio 60.

Jbck · 02/11/2014 01:49

Carnivale finished up in a shorter third season.

Jbck · 02/11/2014 01:50

Coco dont have Netflix sadly.

Gunpowder · 02/11/2014 07:19

YY to Ringer rightsaidthread, was gripping and then a shit last episode.

NoelleHawthorne · 02/11/2014 07:28

I liked studio 60 too

whatadrain · 02/11/2014 07:30

I loved Glory Daze too! I was gutted when it was cancelled after one season.

Chicago Code was another one that went after a season, which I don't understand because everyone I know loved it!
