Why do so many US series get cancelled and leave us dangling?

Where has Once Upon A Time Gone?
Thirteenth floor cancelled.
Dracula cancelled
Penny dreadful cancelled.
Fast forward (which was a brilliant idea and well acted)

I am sure there are tons more. I now rarely bother with US series!

I think they are so keyed into making money they stretch out a good idea forever in case it's a hit and when it's not as popular as it should be they cancel. Much better idea to compress the idea into a brief series (note Sherlock) rather the this TV teasing.

Another Deadwood fan here.

I was also a fan of Brothers & Sisters but missed the Sally Field 3 minute round up at the end. What did I miss?

NotCitrus · 02/11/2014 07:40

Not just Firefly - remember Angel having to squeeze the entire intended last season into the last 3 episodes?

Roswell High did the same thing, just as it got really good. Whereas Heroes really should have been cancelled after the second season as it just got silly.

TheColdDoesBotherMeAnyway · 02/11/2014 07:46

Can someone confirm a way to watch once upon a time series 3 onwards? I was gutted when channel 5 decided not to air it after series 2 Sad. We don't have Netflix but I will sign up if it's on there (I can't see a way of checking without signing in). Thanks Thanks

Terriers - criminal that it only got one season. Donal Logue was insanely good. Firefly, Happy Endings and Freaks and Geeks all should have run and run.

deadwitchproject · 02/11/2014 07:55

So annoyed that I have no idea how any of the following pan out:

firefly
flash forward
invasion
ringer
pan am
continuum (I think season 3 is still on in Canada)
carnivale
stargate:universe
alphas (although loved Sheldon's reaction to the supposed ending on TBBT)

deadwitchproject · 02/11/2014 07:56

oh and Outcasts on BBC. Gah!

AttilaTheMeerkat · 02/11/2014 08:01

I was very fond of "Go On" but that was cancelled after one season sadly.

Why do these get cancelled, well ratings in the US are everything along with advertising revenue. Also many US networks chop and change times of days of programmes shown with greater frequency than here so a once popular show could get shoved into a graveyard slot or on an "unpopular" night.

Cocolepew · 02/11/2014 09:43

I'll check with DD when she gets up about once, I know she watches it online as well.

Cocolepew · 02/11/2014 11:29

Once Upon A Time is on Netflix USA TheCold.

TheColdDoesBotherMeAnyway · 02/11/2014 11:41

Can I use that with a UK login do you know?

NoMarymary · 02/11/2014 11:44

Flash forward was amazing. And ended on a cliffhanger!

I think some of these series are cancelled (like FF) because they are too complicated for the American audiences! (Evil generalisation there but...)

I hope we get to see once upon a time, as I love the silliness of it not to mention Hook

Almost human, why?

Glad to see there is hope for some, but I deleted penny dreadful and under the dome from my planner because of all this cancelling (and I really liked the trailers for Dome but a bit hasty I see). Diss informs me that Steven king is writing the episodes so he won't let us all down.

I've got the series with woody Harrelson as a cop in the Midwest (rave reviews) recorded and think it is standalone so will watch it now Grin

i am sad dallas has been cancelled, was rather enjoying the re-boot. patrick duffy is trying to get another tv network to take it up, but given the actor playing christopher ewing (look away, spoiler alert), left at the end of series 3, i suspect the cast knew it was on borrowed time.

LongDistanceLove · 02/11/2014 12:01

Csi has been moved to the Sunday night death slot Sad so that'll be gone soon.

tribpot · 02/11/2014 12:09

Sometimes shows do get brought back to life - Unforgettable was cancelled after its first series and then picked up by another network, where it's had two (rather good) series.

Bomb Girls was cancelled after two series but at least they got to make a TV movie so they could wrap the plot up.

Once Upon a Time is definitely still on, I wonder why no network in the UK has picked it up? This season features Anna and Elsa from Frozen, which is slightly weird alongside all the trad fairy tale characters.

Firefly was never given a chance, put on at weird times of the night and then - shocker - the viewing figures weren't high enough. I think it was probably pretty expensive to make. Studio 60 may also have been reasonably costly with all the famous guest stars, but I did love it - certainly a lot more than the Newsroom.

PoppyAmex · 02/11/2014 12:11

I wish BBC had wrapped up "Survivors" with Max Beasley; not great quality TV but DH and I invested two seasons and then ended on an all mighty cliff hanger.

SilveryMoon · 02/11/2014 12:16

I was really disappointed that Alcatraz stopped after the first series, was really enjoying that.

Ludways · 02/11/2014 12:31

Flash Forward was based on a book by Robert J Sawyer. It's a good book but the TV series was only very loosely based on the book, there are many dissimilarities.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 02/11/2014 12:57

The BBC have a habit of doing this too. Being Human, Survivors, The Fades and Upstairs Downstairs were all cancelled when I was rather enjoying them. And the first two were replaced by absolute bilge. Instead of BH we got some tosh about zombies who just wanted to be loved.

Whiskwarrior · 02/11/2014 13:00

There's a third series of Carnivale? Where is it? Where? There's no sign of it anywhere online.

I need it!

wheretoyougonow · 02/11/2014 13:03

No ordinary family, pushing Daisy's, the Client List. Gutted about Dallas.

deadwitchproject · 02/11/2014 13:21

not Carnivale, that's unfortunately died a death Whiskwarrior.
Season 3 of Continuum is on in Canada I believe.

Cocolepew · 02/11/2014 13:36

Yesfif you get Netflix you then need to google DNS codes to change it to the US version, Im not 100% sure what to do as DH doestit through the xbox. DD watches the us version on her laptop using Holla which I think is easier.

There are threads on how to do it.

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 02/11/2014 14:02

Ive got ONCE on DVD. Its region 1 (USA) but works. We also bought season 9 of supernatural on DVD region 1 and watch that. When we bought Supernatural the advert did say that region 1 DVDs work on all DVD players made since 2006 (I think the year was) and by our experience its true.

I liked Smash, that only had two seasons. Also enjoyed Raising Hope too, but that was dropped in the UK after 2 seasons and dropped in US after 4.

For any news about shows that are showing over here and when geektown is a really good site.

AnathemaIsANiceNameForAGirl · 02/11/2014 14:13

My So-Called Life. Approximately 1995... Still gutted that it only got one season

Yes. I watched it at the time and again recently - it's held up really well. Apparently Claire Danes didn't want to commit to a second series; if she had, it would have gone ahead. I do think it works well as a stand-alone, though, with no later-series decline to tarnish it.
