Anyone watching , so far quite tense especially the music

OP posts:
RubMyLamp · 19/11/2014 09:18

Is it just me who thinks the Scottish guy who puts up the money is in some form of child trafficking/abuse ring?

Lifeisabeach · 19/11/2014 09:37

Did the teacher lady have a scarf round her neck in all the present day scenes? I'm wondering whether she gives info to Baptiste and the Romanian gang try and slit her throat like they did to the undercover policeman.

RubMyLamp · 19/11/2014 09:42

I can't figure out whats past and present with her... I thought scarf was past.

EmilyGilmore · 19/11/2014 10:10

Rubmylamp The drug addict in the hotel with Baptiste is in the past. She becomes a teacher and is the woman wearing the scarf in the present. She agrees to help Baptiste because he, presumably, saves her in the past.

And no it's not just you thinks the Scottish guy is a paedophile.

RubMyLamp · 19/11/2014 10:52

EmilyGilmore Thanks for that, I was getting quite confused Blush Haha.

Didn't realise he'd gone missing though! How many episodes long is it? Anyone know?

SolomanDaisy · 19/11/2014 11:05

I think it's now a bit too obvious for Ian (the Scottish guy) to be a paedophile. We were being given hints of that, but I reckon it's moving onto something else, such as him and Vincent being related. We are obviously supposed to suspect that Tony was involved in Ian's disappearance and that that was the thing Baptiste suggested he should regret. So that probably means it isn't true. Last week we were obviously supposed to suspect Emily and the liaison officer, but this week seemed to move away from that.

MarthasHarbour · 19/11/2014 11:09

There are another four episodes.

My theories:

  1. Ian Garrett knew he was going to go missing, hence signing over the money to Tony.
  2. Tony is going to get into some kind of pickle for signing that form - was it actually the money? (He didn't check the document before signing it).
  3. Ian Garrett isn't dead - he is lying low in Thailand somewhere $) Little redhead girl isn't Ian's daughter - or even if she was then he almost certainly abused her (remember the episode where he was painting at the easel and said 'hello sweetheart')
  4. Yes Vincent is Ian's son - Ian said the other week that Vincent musn't speak of 'their connection'. That connection is probably father and son.

Bizarrely for me i am completely keeping up with who's who and what time zone we are in (i am usually totally Confused)

Another brilliant episode.

MarthasHarbour · 19/11/2014 11:11

Good points there soloman but i still think that Ian is a child abuser. Just the way he leered at his 'daughter's' picture last week.

plus3 · 19/11/2014 11:32

Excellent series
I also believe Vincent is Ian's son who he has abused consistently over the years - I think he is being portrayed almost sympathically - he says he has never acted on his impulses, he is seeking help with the chemical castration... I think he will in some way be redeemed.
The journalist said he knew what tony did - which I took to mean that tony attacks Ian..? kills him? He has got a temper...
Not sure about anything else though. I don't Ollie will be found alive though Sad

Nancy66 · 19/11/2014 11:43

it would be totally ridiculous if Ollie was alive.

SageSeymour · 19/11/2014 11:48

I am finding this series sooooo painfully slow and dull. A couple of episodes would have probably sufficed as opposed to dragging it out. Nothing actually happens does it?

BitOutOfPractice · 19/11/2014 11:54

I thought james nesbit's acting, when the Ian character said about guilt being a cancer and he realised he knew Bourg, was outstanding. He didn't say a word but I got a real sense of that stomach dropping, hair on end feeling you get when you realise something terrible. I really did gasp!

I'm loving this series and no, whatever op said they had a thing for julien, no it's not wrong. I need to know how he got his limp!

LatinForTelly · 19/11/2014 11:54

Lawks, it's drawn out, isn't it? I too am struggling with the present day / 2006 scenes, and remembering what we're supposed to know in what time period Confused.

Did Vincent actually say 'My father used to say guilt is like a cancer etc'? I know they used the same simile, but yes, if he actually said father, then presumably they are father and son?

I don't think Ollie will be found either. I think it's quite close to the McCanns' experience and every time I see a resemblance, it makes me a bit uncomfortable that I am watching it.

forago · 19/11/2014 11:54

although .......

I've aways thought the story of what happens when a stolen/abused child is found many years later - how they reintegrate (or don't), a court case etc would be interesting. it does occasionally happen - few women in the US recenly. The family in Austria. A series 2?

would be nice to have a positive outcome on one of these dramas for a change (though not necessarily happy)

darksideofthemooncup · 19/11/2014 12:00

I think the house in the country that Ian was talking to Tony about is significant. Maybe Ollie was taken there. I agree about Nesbitt's acting in the scene when Ian was talking about guilt, that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up

Nancy66 · 19/11/2014 12:00

children who are victims of paedophile/trafficking rings don't get found alive.

I agree that 8 episodes is too much. Feels like it could have all been tied up in 4 or 5

MarthasHarbour · 19/11/2014 12:17

Yes darkside I think the house is relevant too.

Redpriestandmozart · 19/11/2014 12:38

I'm thinking the title 'The Missing' will prove not to just mean Ollie.

AnyFucker · 19/11/2014 13:42

Nesbitt's acting is outstanding

and Baptiste has the most beautiful voice and accent

RubMyLamp · 19/11/2014 14:13

Other families have children who have gone missing abroad, not just the McCanns Hmm They're just the most published ones.

ProfYaffle · 19/11/2014 14:15

I thought Nesbitt was amazing in that scene too. The sound/music really added to that stomach sinking sensation. Top notch stuff.

Bedsheets4knickers · 19/11/2014 14:39

At the start of the series I wasn't sure if Nesbit fitted the part but lady night he was just brillant. X

RainbowCake · 19/11/2014 14:46

We are hooked on it here too. My daughter made a good point though, the owner of the house where Olli was taken said that building work was being done, have we missed it or have they not tried to trace the company? Ian owns a construction company in 2006 but no link seems to have been made there.

They made a big thing about the owner of the cleaning company whose van was seen outside the house (again on the video) this is also the man who was sat in the side road. But if building work was going on it is plausible a cleaning company would have been called.....

Hmmm I have no idea where this is going to go.

Ohmygrood · 19/11/2014 15:05

I think that Ian and his wife have Ollie. My theory is that they were trying to pay for a child to to replace their own child, but something went wrong and Ollie was taken. I think that Ian disappeared with his wife and Ollie.

SolomanDaisy · 19/11/2014 15:10

Good theory ohmy. rainbow well remembered by your daughter! It is strange they have never followed up on the building work in the house.
