Corrie thread - still no sign of Cilla or Fat Brenda but Kim Tate on the horizon

Here we are again - a brand new thread for more Corrie ramblings.

Can't believe Cilla still hadn't turned up by the end of the last thread.

Still hoping for an enormous cast-cull. Hoping for a bomb / gas explosion / serial killer / all of the previous.

hilda Roy's Mum was great too.

hildasmuriel · 22/10/2014 11:37

She was prof just was not really around long enough to become established. SI think they could have done so much more with Sue Johnstone as Gloria but her character was not strong enough, which was a shame as she is a fine actress. There is definitely a vacancy for this kind of character.

ProfYaffle · 22/10/2014 11:57

Yes, I agree. I also liked the dynamic of 3 generations of women living together and how that could have panned out. It'd take some decent writing to make it work though .....

BastardGoDarkly · 22/10/2014 12:20

Cilla is on this morning!! Grin

hildasmuriel · 22/10/2014 12:29

I've just watched her, we were right about her being the vehicle for getting Fizz out for mat leave. It always intrigues me how her face actually looks different in real life than it does as Cilla.

Jill2015 · 22/10/2014 12:44

My favourite nosey male busybody type was Percy Sugden, I loved the dynamic between him and Phyllis. I did enjoy Reg too. I think a lot of the old cantankerous characters have been the best. Loved Maud Grimes and who, of course, could forget Blanched. End Sharples I only just remember but it seems she set the standard for these characters. Following the departure of Blanche we are missing a female such character. Mary fulfills parts but is too vulnerable not nearly cantankerous enough.

Totally agree, hilda. Phyllis believed that one day Percy would fall for her Grin and if he didn't, it wouldn't be for lack of effort, on her part!
I remember one Christmas episode where she came to the door with a present for Percy. Emily invited her to come and join them at the table. Percy was in the kitchen, and his face was a picture, when he came back in, and saw Phyllis.
I loved Reg, he and Maureen, and Maud, were brilliant. I thought that Gloria might take over the mantle of Blanche, at one stage. She seemed to be getting into the mode of 'I will speak as I find' , but then she left.
Blanche at the AA meeting, with Peter, Deirdre and Ken, is one of the funniest scenes ever.

WhoKnowsWhereTheSlimeGoes · 22/10/2014 13:09

I prefer Norris to any of the previous male busybodies, his combination of facial expressions and nasty put-downs comments is brilliant and the way Emily and Rita constantly put him back in his place but he never changes is great too.

I agree that Gloria, Stella and Eva could have been a great backbone of the street type family, I think making Stella get back with Carl was a massive tactical error, in fact having Carl around in the first place was a mistake, she was far better suited to being a strong single woman. Eva is really coming into her own now.

hildasmuriel · 22/10/2014 14:13

Ah yes the AA scene, totally brilliant. who knows you are right about Norris and his interactions, he is quite ace and having him in the shop gives him the perfect setting to deliver his observations.

I wonder if Phyllis ever really said 'cup of tea Percy' (imagine gruff voice) or Mavis ever said 'I don't really know'.

Really enjoying this reminiscing, thanks you are all cheering me up.

Also today spoilers around how Jenny comes back but don't want to say in case others don't like to read.

BastardGoDarkly · 22/10/2014 15:01

Oh I just want Eva to put her new tits away every time I see her Confused

Onedropoflove · 22/10/2014 17:08

Do you mean her new pregnant tits? Hmm

BastardGoDarkly · 22/10/2014 17:19

Eva's pregnant?! Shock

WhoKnowsWhereTheSlimeGoes · 22/10/2014 17:31

Not Eva, the actor who plays her.

BastardGoDarkly · 22/10/2014 17:35

Yes, that's how I understood it, I'm shocked, she seems tiny.

Apologies Eva's actor,I thought you were doing a Kim Marsh Confused

Jill2015 · 22/10/2014 20:13

The community centre story is such a yawnfest.

differentnameforthis · 23/10/2014 07:24

I am Confused as to how they are calling it a community centre it will be tiny!

cleanmachine · 23/10/2014 07:27

I like eva and shes good with jason but they should pair her with steve. Poor steve has been so dullified since pairing up with manky michelle.

Miss blanche. My all time favourite tv character. Irreplaceable.

Camolips · 23/10/2014 07:36

Stephanie Cole was the perfect replacement for Blanche. Shame she couldn't have stayed for the long term.

Steve stood up for himself last night. Hurray! Disappointed in Liz, don't like Tony and she never got her apology.

hildasmuriel · 23/10/2014 07:47

I think I could hear the cheers of all the posters on here when Steve stood up and told Michelle echoing exactly what we've been saying on here.

I think Eva should stay with Jason though, they are quite similar characters and loads of potential for comedy. Steve needs someone a bit feistier who he can bounce off I think.

Funny how a character like Cilla can just bounce back in and it's like she never left.

Jill2015 · 23/10/2014 07:56

I am as to how they are calling it a community centre it will be tiny!

Because Yasmeen has decreed that it is, in fact, a community centre Grin, and if she says it VERY LOUD, people have to agree, it seems.
If she is in it, nobody else will want to be there...

One of the most painful characters, ever, in my opinion. She sounds like she is talking IN CAPITALS, all the time. My eyes glaze when she appears. I'm afraid they will buy Anna and Owen's house and stay FOREVER Grin

BastardGoDarkly · 23/10/2014 08:18

Roy's mum should have stayed, she was great.

I find the whole new Asian family dull as ditch water tbh, and some of the acting is shocking.

Jill2015 · 23/10/2014 08:35

Totally agree, re the dullness, and the acting. Dreadful.

Ditch water would be compelling viewing by comparison, especially to Yasmeen and the sulky young fellow, I don't know (or care) what his name is.

differentnameforthis · 23/10/2014 08:43

She sounds like she is talking IN CAPITALS, all the time.

My dh has an aunt who is exactly like her! Every time she comes on screen I am reminded of her...

Jill2015 · 23/10/2014 08:46

^^ Grin

hildasmuriel · 23/10/2014 09:46

Ha ha talking in capitals the whole time, that's exactly it! Maybe she is channelling the ghost of Fred now she's in the old butchers. Soon she will start saying 'IT'S A COMMUNITY CENTRE, I SAY A COMMUNITY CENTRE'.

Can you just deem a place to be a community centre and that's it? Aren't they usually run by local councils or charities etc? How on earth will they fund it?

A community centre probably quite a useful place as another meeting area and it can house the giant creche perhaps.

It amazes me how things are built and then forgotten. The chippy has stood quite neglected since Cilla left, it has been spurned for kebabs and bistro foid , even hotpots don't seem to sell like they did in Betty's day. When I did the tour I found two more houses past Roy's. Who lives there? Maybe we never see them as they drink tea in their own houses and make their own bacon but ties.

hildasmuriel · 23/10/2014 09:50

Bistro foid should be food or food in New York accent not commonly heard in Weatherfield

And butties not butt ties. That would be something quite different I think...

I hate spellcheckers, guaranteed to trip you up.
