I probably could have coped with the Mountain v Oberyn match at 11 chris. My parents were a bit liberal lax about my viewing habits Grin.

I'd show him the whole of the episode though - watching just the goriest bit is probably a bit more disturbing.

Strangely enough I wondered about what happened to Edmure last night. I know that he went off with his bride but I couldn't remember whether he'd been killed separately or dragged back.

I also can't remember what reason Joffrey came up with for beheading Ned and how Robert Baratheon died. Was it a hunting accident, or am I mixing it up with The Tudors where Jonathan Rhys Meyers gets gored in the thigh?

And was it an accident or just made to look like one?

limitedperiodonly · 15/06/2014 11:55

hildasmuriel By your name, so you shall be known. You are of a certain Coronation Street-watching vintage, aren't you? So am I. It was so much better then, wasn't it?

QueenOfThorns · 15/06/2014 12:53

Limitedperiod, Ned did a deal where he had to confess to treason to protect his daughters and save his life (he thought he'd have to take the black), so he was a self-proclaimed criminal and Joffery was I suppose within his rights to lop his head off.

Robert was killed by a hunting accident, but he was given dodgy wine by Lancel Lannister at Cersei's instigation, so not an accident at all, really!

MikeLitoris · 15/06/2014 12:56

Robert died after a hunting 'accident' while drunk. The wine helpfully supplied by a lannisters page. Ned knew that Joff wasn't an actual Baratheon and wanted Cersei to take the children away so Stannis could have the iron throne. Cersei knew this (littlefinger told here iirc) and Ned was jailed and killed for treason.

I watched the very first ep again yesterday and then spent the afternoon googling theories on Jon Snows mother Grin. Turns out I already thought of and agree with the most popular one. And most of the others about other characters. I don't suggest you do this is you don't like spoilers though.

limitedperiodonly · 15/06/2014 13:06

Thanks. I will definitely not be googling the identity of Jon Snow's mother as I hate spoilers. But that does hinder me when I forget things, which I do a lot. I can't google because I might learn something that cannot then be unlearned.

And you've done it to me again. I have Tywin, Cersei, Jaime, Tyrion, Joffrey and his siblings who I remember, but cannot name. But who the fuck is Lancel Lannister?

limitedperiodonly · 15/06/2014 13:13

I like the look of Stannis. I was watching Stephen Dillane in The Tunnel and thought, 'Mmm, I have unfairly overlooked you.'

Obviously what impressed me most was his acting ability.

TulipOHare · 15/06/2014 13:17

Re how far through the books we are, yes, we are broadly speaking at the end of book 3; but the TV series does not strictly follow the books' plotlines. Dany's and Sansa's storylines are already into books 4/5. One reason for this is that books 4 and 5 split the characters, so book 4 features Cersei, Brienne, Jaime etc but no Jon or Dany or some other major characters. Their stories are then picked up in book 5, but in-universe are occurring concurrently with book 4 if that makes sense Confused

Of course the TV series can't do this, they can't have a season 5 with no Daenerys and then bring her back for S6, so they are rejigging the plotlines.

What this means is that for the first 3 seasons of the show, it was more or less able to follow books 1-3, but from here on out it is anyone's guess how things will go. I'm really interested to see how they do it Grin

This is Lancel Lannister. He's a minor Lannister who appeared in S1 (maybe 2 as well, I can't recall)

Thanks tulip- but no. I have no memory of that person at all. Looks like a boy playing a girl in an old lady hat.

I nerdishly watch each episode twice. I do that with quite a few things. Given my TV habit, any more and I wouldn't have time to wash and dress or shop for basic comestibles. I could cope but the cat would complain.

I like Dany but I was quite relieved to have a Dany-free episode for once.

Ker-thunk, 'you know nothing Jon Snore'

The worry about the TV show catching up to GRRM before he's finished...well, the series is such a hit I think it will go on regardless. They will produce a season per year until it is either finished or cancelled. If they run out of books to adapt, my guess is they would be given plotlines by GRRM and allowed to run with them. Which is fine if you only watch the show, but would put us book-readers in a quandary - would the show spoil the boos for us?! The horror Shock Grin

I think if that happened I would have to stop watching the TV show, because as much as I love it, I love the books more. Getting my hands on A Dance With Dragons when it came out was truly one of the most exciting book-related experiences of my life Blush

QueenOfThorns · 15/06/2014 13:59

they can't have a season 5 with no Daenerys

No, but I wish they would!

Loving the old lady hat - I can definitely see the late Queen Mum in that one. With a matching handbag, obviously!

Lancel is Jaime, Cersei and Tyrion's cousin, the son of Tywin's brother Kevan. He's around as well, I think, he sits on the Small Council.

MikeLitoris · 15/06/2014 14:02

I read something yesterday with the producers saying they definitely didn't want to drag this out. It won't go on past the books. So should be finished by series 7-8? I hope they stick to that.

I can't cope with another 'lost' that was dragged out for at good few more seasons than it needed to.

limitedperiodonly · 15/06/2014 14:21

QueenOfThorns Kate M is definitely channelling the spirits of Queenie and Princess Margaret with her nude shoes with an inch platform.

Does she have a matching colostomy bag? Enquiring minds need to be told...

anonacfr · 15/06/2014 14:43

Glad to see I am not the only one who's bored of Danaerys.

By the way everyone speaks of Jon's mother but I've also found a theory of who his father might be.... Which I hadn't thought of but would make sense. Mmmm.

MikeLitoris · 15/06/2014 15:34

I guessed the father as soon as I read the first book. When I watched the show I had a different theory but the book changed that. My only reservation on that theory is that to me it's very obvious. Probably too obvious for Grrm.

Christwaddle · 15/06/2014 15:43

Who!?
Who!?
I think I know who jons mother is....but father? Hmm...
SPILL :)
Ds1 is asking lots of questions about GofT - probably some of his friends watch it. He would be ok with the battle scenes but the incest and brothel scenes? Not so much :)

limitedperiodonly · 15/06/2014 15:50

If there are to be spoilers you have to go on to another thread.

Sorry,I'm not being bossy. But yes, I am.

Please don't spoil it for me.

Thanks Smile

MikeLitoris · 15/06/2014 15:52

Oh I wouldn't post here. Pm me if you want to know who I think his parents are Chris

Christwaddle · 15/06/2014 15:53

Ah.
Sorry.
Wrong GofT thread!
Blush

limitedperiodonly · 15/06/2014 15:55

Don't worry about that chris. No harm done.

QueenOfThorns · 15/06/2014 17:11

There are no possible spoilers around Jon's parentage because it hasn't yet been revealed in the books. Anything out there is pure speculation!

The only people who know for sure are GRRM and the GoT show runners, so don't worry!

And for what it's worth, I think the most popular theory will turn out to be correct, obvious or not.

MikeLitoris · 15/06/2014 17:24

I hope it does queen

I agree about it not being a spoiler as such but I wouldn't want to say it just incase. I'm surprised the show didn't go into as much detail on that particular bit though. I'm a bit sad it's the last one tomorrow. I have nothing to Look forward to now

anonacfr · 15/06/2014 18:00

If you have Sky do what I do and go on demand. They're showing the whole thing from scratch.
It's quite eerie watching the Lannisters and Starks interact at the beginning all over again.

MikeLitoris · 15/06/2014 18:29

I've got them all saved to the sky box so I can re watch them to my hearts content Grin

I do think its a good idea to watch most of them at least twice. There are loads of little references that are easy to miss the first time.
