It's a bit soon for me to have an opinion yet, but it looks interesting enough that I'm recording it to watch later with DH...

He is a Revenant, garlicnutty. They all have the capacity to be Underpass Belly Scoffers.

ScrambledSmegs · 24/06/2013 20:55

Liz, I assumed that Claire just tidied up/fixed Lena's room, in her bright smiley 'everything's amazing, Camille came back from the dead, nothing weird going on no sirree' way. Not that I blame her. I'd probably do the same thing Sad

LizTerrine · 24/06/2013 21:17

Ah yes, Smegs. So presumably she also cleared up the dead cat/rabbit and said no more about that, either...

garlicnutty · 24/06/2013 21:30

Ahh, I see!!! Revenant Rage and Living Denial! Thanks :)

... sounds like nearly every thread on Relationships ...

NoHank · 24/06/2013 21:33

I have no idea of anything whatsover, so my important question is...

What's the difference between a spade and a shovel? I said Serge hit Toni with a shovel but when talking about it with my DM she corrected me and said it was a spade. I said I thought they were the same thing but DM thinks a shovel has a much shorter handle and bigger shovelly bit. Like a metal dustpan. Anyway, as you were...

guineapiglet · 24/06/2013 21:41

Watched and enjoyed this episoe, it really gets you thinking. Some great theories on here, but i still reckon they are all dead and returning to the village for some final reckoning..... The dam engineer said the dam could only keep going for three days, so who know what will be revealed if the dam drains away. Presumably the coach crashed down the hill and into the dam? Could that be that which kicked off the returners coming back, some kind of anniversary?

Very compelling... Im not really a fan of zombie stuff but this seems to be heading that way...maybe the returners were kind of saved and are ones which are alive?

ScrambledSmegs · 24/06/2013 21:53

NoHank - I thought spades had sharp edges as they were for cutting hard earth and digging while a shovel had a big scoop for moving earth. I'm impressed that your DM could discern the sharp edges of said spade through the television screen, impressive Grin

OfficialSweetieMonitor · 24/06/2013 21:54

Spades are for digging the garden.

Shovels are for hitting your undead, possibly serial-killer brother with.

ScrambledSmegs · 24/06/2013 21:56

Or that ^^

Grin
BoreOfWhabylon · 24/06/2013 21:58

But Returned Victor made the coach crash. And Murdering Serge had already Returned and Munched.

Now that it has been revealed that les bâtards have planned a second series, I fear that we will not get closure before next year! And I might have fallen under a bus before then and will never find out! Shock

Unless I return, of course...

OfficialSweetieMonitor · 24/06/2013 22:00

So your brother-bashing shovel would be no good for digging the grave to put him, for that you'd need a spade.

ThreeBeeOneGee · 24/06/2013 22:05

Well I finally watched episode 3, came out the other side of it none the wiser, then went straight on here to catch up with the MN analysis.

Yes, I noticed a bit of pink here and there.

I still think Victor is the personification of the dam water. As he gets stronger and more assertive, the water in the dam recedes. The water level in the plumbing in rising because the water from the dam is moving towards its human form, i.e. Victor.

I also think Pierre knows more than he lets on. Mr Costa knew too much.

OP posts:
NoHank · 24/06/2013 22:17

So would a spade be the rectangular shaped one and the shovel the type that is sort of shield shaped? So what do you call the short handled one you use to shovel coal onto your fire with?

Every day's a school day!

susiedaisy · 24/06/2013 22:18

Loving this series but have absolutely no theories to add, but I do want to say how beautiful Simon is! Grin

OfficialSweetieMonitor · 24/06/2013 22:48

Yes NoHank I think that is right. But those little coal shovels wouldn't be much good against a full-blown zombie invasion.

If you must pick a fireside implement to protect yourself from an undead serial-killer (brother or unrelated) I think a poker would be a better choice.

ScrambledSmegs · 24/06/2013 22:48

Coal shovel.

Not sure where this sudden expertise in spades and shovels is taking me.

LizTerrine · 24/06/2013 22:51

Ok, new theory. Well, it kind of fits in with the homeopathic dam theory, but a new twist.

The way I've been shortening '"les revenants" is "les revs", which is close to the French for "the dreams". What if those returning had been dreamed or wished into existence by those they impacted or left behind? Camille's parents had obviously both been desperate for her return - her room as shrine, Claire 'praying' with Pierre, whatever Jerome was doing with Lucy. Adele missed Simon so much she used to hallucinate him. Julie was obviously still terrified and haunted by Serge's attack.

In contrast, other parents of children who died in the crash had started to rebuild their lives, with the memorial (and the couple with the new baby).

Maybe the longing/obsession for and with les revs has literally pulled them from the lake?

There's obviously some dark force underpinning it all though. What's creating them feels hostile. And why now?

LizTerrine · 24/06/2013 22:53

One more thing. Pierre looks like a plump, smug French Tom Hanks.

Marlinspike · 24/06/2013 22:58

Ha at "plump, smug, French Tom Hanks"!

I have no theories, but I did notice that the lighting in episode 3 was brighter and less sepulchral. I also noticed the prolifieration of pictures stuck on walls everywhere - i think some very clever person upthread noted that, and I am sure it must be significant (but heaven knows why)

Has Victor actually spoken yet?

Marlinspike · 24/06/2013 22:59

Oh, and Simon is gorgeous, and reminds me of a (slightly) older Harry Styles!

LauraPashley · 24/06/2013 23:09

Can I just check - do we know for a fact that Serge is the belly scoffer? Not wishing to disagree cos I think he probably is, but annoyed that I can't remember when / how we found that out?

Are the dead floating goats just to show us that the dam being created caused a lot of death?

The trailer I saw after Nashville passed me by in a blur but I'm sure it was Simon who was jumping around in a grave- I thought he was checking to see if his body was there? When the revenants revant do they originally not know they have previously died???

LauraPashley · 24/06/2013 23:12

Oh and sorry someone asked me miles up thread who Laura Pashley is! I have been avoiding the thread until I caught up with this episode. I just made it up tbh mainly as I was looking for a Pashley bike at that stage, but I'd be curious to know if it was a "real" name too!

OfficialSweetieMonitor · 24/06/2013 23:14

I wondered about dreams and checked googled French translation, but it's slightly different word. But yes, possibility.

I think Toni implied that Serve was serial killer 7 years ago - don't know if it's still him...

ScrambledSmegs · 24/06/2013 23:25

Well, he's the only character who wears a hoodie. He's the right build. Hs brother was a suspect in the original murders, and even though it obviously isnt him he clearly knows way more than he was telling, especially about why thenmurders stopped. And if you read the Channel 4 bio of his character it totally gives the fricking game away...

BeaWheesht · 24/06/2013 23:25

This thread never shows up on threads I'm on - creepy!

I don't have any theories really. Victor killed the most neighbour woman though right? Or maybe made her do it to herself? When Julie was going to call the police he seemed to have powers to interfere with her mind??

Someone mentioned an anniversary - when Adele took Simon to see their daughter wasn't it a memorial or something for the bus crash victims?

Also does everyone have a link to the pub?
Simon - played drums there
Camille - was there in a flashback
Serge - brother runs it
Mr and mrs costa???
Victor???
Girl who got attacked but survived - waitress there (also do we think she really survived or is she a revenant too?)

There's something weird about the youth hostel guy isn't there?
