It's a bit soon for me to have an opinion yet, but it looks interesting enough that I'm recording it to watch later with DH...

OP posts:
Sunnywithshowers · 16/06/2013 23:48

After today's episode I'm starting to wonder if some of the returners are back for revenge?

ScrambledSmegs · 16/06/2013 23:56

Ooh - series 2 in 2014 apparently.

So it's not all going to get resolved. Dammit.

(I only found this out because I was googling the music. Mogwai recorded it before the series was made/filmed. Seems a bit of an arse about face way to do it!)

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/06/2013 00:14

Scrambled I said the same last time. It's not something someone would say of tries to have sex and it didn't happen

Mrsd - ((hugs)) iswym - you know it can't happen but you wish it could so you would grasp and believe the situation - tho still think I would freak

Adele and priest did say its happened before - so Wonder if Simon had returned before - if Simon did comit suicide then would Adele be cross at him esp as pregnant - then again I'm
Not cross at dh but different circumstances - dh killed his self due to severe depression :(

I don't think Simon relised he was dead - and would have done of killed his self - so think he must have died in an accident - possibly car to the church?

Think the doctor (Julie?) was a victim of the slasher as the marks on tummy look the same?

Can't believe girl in tunnel (Lucy?) survived that attack

bellabelly · 17/06/2013 00:36

Haven't read the whole thread so sorry if this has been done. Is Victor the son of Adele and Simon? Hence him turning up to Adele's old apartment? Which is now lived in by Julie (?) the dr/ nurse woman who had to give a statement to the police?

BoreOfWhabylon · 17/06/2013 01:06

My thoughts:
The policeman who is now with Adele killed Simon (because he wanted Adele for himself)

Underpass girl is a returnee, otherwise can't see how she would have survived being stabbed and having her liver half-devoured.

Victor is scaring me. A lot.

Julie was a previous victim of the serial killer but managed to survive.

Can't work out who put the dog/wolf on the meathook before it revived.

The water leaking from the dam will submerge the new village and reveal the old one.

I have seen nothing yet that would falsify my Homeopathic Dam Theory.

OfficialSweetieMonitor · 17/06/2013 09:52

I thought the priest was implying that Jesus came back from the dead (although surely he wasn't thinking that Simon was Christ Confused )

Simon must have realised he was dead because he went to the cemetry in last weeks episode?

Lucy apparently was killed in the subway attack... but is now alive...

Victor can't be Adele & Simons son because other people haven't aged...? (if you mean that he died as a baby)

What was with the floating goats?

angelos02 · 17/06/2013 09:57

i think Adele had visions of Simon previously as part of the grieving process but he wasn't actually there. Now he really is back but she thinks it is all still in her head.

I think they captured how in love they both were before he died brilliantly. In complete contrast to how she is with the policeman.

LtEveDallas · 17/06/2013 10:40

I can't work out Victor. I had thought he was Julie's baby, but the aging thing didn't work out.

Although if Julie is ALSO a returner - maybe shes been back for 8 years or so and Victor was an 'orphan' baby who had now found her - hence his aging???

Although that doesn't fit with him appearing at the scene of the coach crash 4 years ago.... bollocks.

I do think that Julie is returned. I think she was a victim of the serial killer (they said the last killing was 7 years ago at the police station) but returned some time ago. Maybe the crying last night was because she worked out who/what Victor was.

Oh, what if she killed Victor? Or maybe her own killing/near death left her unable to have children so was crying because of that.

Oh God, I don't know. This is really frustrating! (and NO-ONE at work is watching it so I can't even chat to them about it).

SweetestThing · 17/06/2013 11:02

Didn't Julie say to Simon that she had lived in the flat for 8 or 9 years (or at least that Adele, the tenant before her, had moved out then?) - which would mean she couldn't have been the last dead victim of the serial killer. I think she was attacked but survived.

Victor is just spooky.

teejwood · 17/06/2013 12:17

Wow - great ep last night.

Am sticking with the theory that Simon may have killed himself but it is now obvious it wasn't a suicide pact - but was perhaps tied into Adele telling him she was pg.

Am also sticking with Victor not being the son of anyone we now see; but my theory about why he sought out Julie has changed. I had thought he found the most caring female figure he could (nurse) to look after him - but now wonder if he sought her out because she is a link between the living and the dead - having been attacked by Serge and barely survived. Maybe she was effectively dead but was resuscitated? So she is not one of the returned, but similarly was dead and now is alive. Maybe she is the blueprint they want to copy re: how you get your life back?! Agree that Victor jumped out of the window to show Julie that he was not a normal living child.

Still think Lucy was a medium and she hesitated in running because she realised what Serge was and was shocked by that. If she did fully die, then that seems to indicate that the returnees come back with a pulse etc - not just a raging thirst and massive hunger. Which takes this into new territory in Zombie stories and leaves everything up for grabs. How do we know who is human and who is a returnee?

Still think Pierre is a creep. Also - the recurring theme of pictures/photography. Lots of photos on the walls of the bar and also the pictures pinned with tacs all around the twins' home (eg upstairs landing) is somewhat at odds with the neat layout of the rest of the house.

The two graves we see in the opening credits are Toni the barman's mum and brother. Agree that he found out his brother was the serial killer and killed him to stop the murders - assuming that the brother turning out to be a murderer would have virtually killed the mother, as the family would have been shunned if not turned on by the rest of the community.

I also noticed Mrs Costa in the cafe - how did she get cash to buy food - maybe from Mr Costa before the fire?

Also noticed the sound of water in the church even before Adele's daughter went into the loo - which would make you think that the water level is falling in the dam as it is rising in the village? So we have water running uphill, somewhat against the laws of nature/physics. Maybe the new village was built after a waterway was diverted into the dam and it is trying to reassert itself? Maybe the dead are being forced out of their graves in the graveyard, woken up and being given new life by the rising waters? Which ties in very neatly with the homeopathic dam theory! Grin

coffeeinbed · 17/06/2013 12:20

The bitterly could fly through glass.
Victor goes through glass.
There must be a connection
or I'm overthinking things

teejwood · 17/06/2013 12:24

glass reflects like water. pictures are an image or reflection of the person or object photographed. hmmm.

coffeeinbed · 17/06/2013 12:28

So they come through the water/glass where as the normal people can only see the reflection, but not what is truelly in.

OfficialSweetieMonitor · 17/06/2013 12:46

wow tee you noticed so many things, like where did Mrs Costa get money to buy food...

Interesting point about water/photos/reflections; is there a screenshot for episode preview (I forget where) with a different person shown in the reflection?

In the library did Simon actually disappear or did Adele just think he did?

Et les chevres alors??

StringBeanJean · 17/06/2013 12:50

Ooh glad I found this thread! Just watched ep2 and think it's fab. Possibly enjoying reading your theories more though!

Think it's strange we didn't hear anymore about M Costa this week. Think I might need to watch ep 1 again to see those photos he had.

Also agree the dam is key. Apparently water is going down?

This is prob a bit too much like Lost, but here's my theory. I think there might have been an awful accident with the dam so they are ALL dead, but don't know it yet. The ones who died previously like Camille and Simon are just finding their way back to their loved ones. Might explain why everything is so drab and all are so pale and, well, depressed? I don't think I've seen anyone smile or laugh yet ...

Probably completely wrong!

guineapiglet · 17/06/2013 12:55

We have been really absorbed and intrigued by this, really enjoyed last night's episode and once it had finished, couldn't stop thinking about it all - love dramas where you have to piece it all together and are given clues to work out...... and getting to work out the characters - however, this morning, I was struck by the fact that the last time I felt like this about a drama, it became very addictive, - thinking about The Killing, but especially of Lost, which then morphed into about 5 series of tortuous but utterly compelling tv. I had the horrible thought that maybe everyone in this village, is actually dead, and like Lost, it is some kind of pergatory, or holding place, - were they all drowned somehow, not sure, but clearly the water has a lot to answer for. There are reflections everywhere, large glass windows, huge mirrors, lots of looking at things indirectly - love the atmosphere, the houses, the mountains, - so will definitely keep watching.

  • In Lost the characters were revealed bit by bit, and for some reason, I expected there to be a hugely impressive ending, but after all those hours of watching, it was a bit of a let down,
guineapiglet · 17/06/2013 12:56

Whoops!! Cross post Stringbean verrrrrrrrrrrrry spooky that we were thinking and typing this at the same time!!!

teejwood · 17/06/2013 13:10

It's funny how we see echoes of other things in what we are watching! We've mentioned Sixth Sense, The Others, Lost, have we said Twin Peaks yet?

The pictures remind me of Stephen Poliakoff, generally very stylish drama with a high proportion of attractive people and lots of emoting, lots of pictures as metaphors, but very little actually happens when all is said and done. So I'm not surprised we're getting series 2 of this - it is unlikely we're going to get a neat and tidy "fin" at the end of series 1!

In terms of reflections - do we think that those left behind have made of their lives what they could have done? Lena and her friends are hardly setting the world alight, playing pool and hanging out in the bar all the time. Is she wasting the life she so nearly didn't have?

Did Toni the barman do the right thing by killing his brother (we assume) rather than handing him in to the police so the families of Serge's victims could see justice done? He continues to live in that community, among those families, knowing their pain.

Is Adele doing the right thing in marrying another man when her love for him seems to be only a poor reflection of the love she had for Simon?

Julie obviously had a second chance after her attack - has she grabbed life with both hands, or is she just going through the motions while hiding in her flat, not really interacting with people other than her patients?

teejwood · 17/06/2013 13:12

Oh - and re Serge - how could Julie know whether or not her attacker was still around? Has she had to live in fear all this time, a mere shadow of the life she could have had?

teejwood · 17/06/2013 13:17

And re the butterfly - the name is Victorina Stelenes Wink

SweetestThing · 17/06/2013 13:23

Oh, I just googled the name of the butterfly and it's also known as the Malachite butterfly. So I googled Malachi and he was a prophet known as the Messenger - am I over-thinking this just a bit, maybe? Grin

coffeeinbed · 17/06/2013 13:32

Oh!!!
So there is a connection!
I wasn't overthinking!
for once
The funny thing is victor is the name Julie gave him.

Mooster1709 · 17/06/2013 13:32

wait wait, I am confused!

So the serial killer is the barman's brother, and we think he was killed by the barman?

Mrs Costa didn't die in the fire last week?

Why has Victor turned up at Adele's old flat? Do we think there's no connection there?

teejwood · 17/06/2013 13:39

Mooster - Victor was following Julie, that was how he ended up at that flat; so it wasn't to do with Adele, I don't think.

Mrs Costa can't die as she's a returnee - and the police/firemen didn't find a body.

When he was being interviewed by the police, Toni the barman seemed genuinely shocked by the fact Lucy had been attacked that way and we also find out that the previous investigation had found some sort of link to him. So if it wasn't him, it had to be someone close to him. And if he was so sure this type of attack should not happen again - that must mean that the killer was out of the picture. There were two graves at his family home - so if you add all that together, you get that it was his brother and that maybe he killed his brother or at least knew he was dead and that this type of attack simply should not be happening again.

guineapiglet · 17/06/2013 13:41

Do we know it was his brother and not his son? I thought he seemed so much younger.
