Just wondering what you are making of it so far!

Casting on the whole is very good, a few things have been changed but have been thinking of what is to come.

Not looking forward to seeing Viserys (even though he deserves it, the arrogant twat!)

Or worse what Theon does when he loses Rickon and Bran!!

My favourite portayal is definitely Peter Drinklage's Tyrion Lannister, he is fab!!

Gosh, he didn't look 5!

I didn't even know there were books! I now need to buy and read them as fast as humanly possible.. Can you download books to an iPad? I don't have a kindle

Thanks for all the explanations, I didn't quite believe the queen was shagging her brother!

Why did arya go with her dad instead of staying home? And who is rickon?
These people get around the country super fast don't they, considering they don't have cars.. I can't keep track of who's where Grin

MrsRhettButler · 17/05/2011 01:15

Oh, and who is renly?

KaraStarbuckThrace · 17/05/2011 04:57

Renly is one of the younger brothers of King Robert (the other being Stannis).

I haven't seen last nights episode, will watch it tonight.

Kudos to them showing breastfeeding an older child!!! Makes a lot of sense in an environment where infant mortality would be very high to bf as long as possible to protect the youngest children from infections.

Good episode last night. The scene between Loras and Renly certainly wasn't in the book though as well as a few other things.

Definitely enjoying The Hound and The Mountain getting scrappy.

TrillianAstra · 17/05/2011 08:59

They're cling him Robyn in the series, not Robert, because if there were two Roberts (big fat king and spoiled sickly child) we wouldn't get confused Hmm

All the children have had about 2 years added so maybe he is supposed to be 8?

The breastfeeding is to show that Lysa Arryn is a clingy and overprotective mother who spoils her child. "I'm the Lord of the Eeyrie and I can do what I want" comes out of the child's mouth almost as much as "Mummy!" Not surprising given that she was married off to a much older man (20 yrs older than her father apparently), sent to live far away from anyone she knew, and then had multiple miscarriages.

So sorry, it's not a good message. It's supposed to be weird.

--

Rickon is the youngest Stark brother, he is supposedly still up at Winterfell with Bran and Robb but we haven't actually seen him.

--

When Ned Stark went down to be Hand of the King he took Sansa because she is going to marry Joffrey. Robb had to stay and be "Lord of Winterfell", Bran was in a coma, Rickon was too young. There's no particular reason for Arya to go, except that he'd want to take one sibling along to keep Sansa company, and maybe going to court would civilise her a bit and teach her how to be a lady, because what good are daughters if you can't marry them off?

TrillianAstra · 17/05/2011 09:02

The scene between Robert and Cersei wasn't in the books either (because neither of them is a point of view character) but it was very nicely done.

SummerRain · 17/05/2011 09:35

I agree... the Robert and Cercei scene was a good addition. It filled out their characters a lot. I'm pretty sure the child she keeps mentioning who died isn't in the books though right? She mentions repeatedly at later points how she went to great lengths never to have Robert's child.

Trilian... see that's why i shouldn't post from my phone at stupid times at night... I knew I was getting his name wrong but typed it anyway?! I agree, it's a shame that the breastfeeding is a negative image, it was the one scene i was kind of hoping they wouldn't transfer to the series... although natural term breastfeeding is mentioned often in the books (many references to children feeding til 2 or longer) the reasons for Lysa feeding Robyn are fairly fucked up to say the least.

Rickon will feature a bit more in later series but he's not a huge character (although he possibly will be in the next book)

kiery · 17/05/2011 11:42

Thought last nights episode was good. I also thought the added scenes; renly and loras, cersei and robert added to the characters.

I am sure in the books Cersei does mention that she did become pregnant with Robert's child once, but she said that she found some one to help her get rid of it ( I assumed she meant abortion) as she didn't want one of his children.

Again, I do think they have softened her character in the series ( I can't remember the conversation she had with Catelyn at Bran's bedside after his fall, episode 2, happening in the book). But it adds depth to her character and makes her more realisitic.

TrillianAstra · 17/05/2011 11:44

Only correcting you on the names so that TV people wouldn't get confused over us calling him Robert and the TV calling him Robyn. :)

Twit · 17/05/2011 17:53

Ah, so am I right about the weirdy blonde kid then? Shock and yuck. I liked that scene (tv firster) with Robert and Cersei, I thought it was showing us she was nicer when you got to know her - I felt sorry for her when he said he never loved her. But now.... well, I shall see I guess.
It looks like the ole king is getting about with all his bastards (tsk)
And It looks like Ned might be in trouble too now (ouch)

And the strange sister and her son, it is a shame that BF has been shown in that context BUT I guess, for most people, it shows that they are fucked up (being 'civilised' and not 'tribal') by carrying on (with him being an older child). That dungeon was pretty cool though, just hope Tyrion doesn't go mad and jump or try to climb.

Arya (the girl?) is cool, I hope she ends up ok.
So is the kings younger brother going to take the throne or is that all part of the flowery blokes evil plans?

KaraStarbuckThrace · 18/05/2011 15:24

Saw it last night, and yes have to agree that the bfing scene was seriously weird just because Lysa is so obviously crazy!!

Just wish I had finished eaten my dinner before watching it, some of the scenes were rather gruesome (especially the horse).

Wasn't Ser Loras's armour completely fab? Grin

That was a touching scene between Robert and Cersei. And the scene between Ser Loras and Renly was well done as well.

pawsnclaws · 18/05/2011 18:17

I'm loving this, but I've been on mumsnet too long - all I could think of when the breastfeeding scene came on was "hmm what would mumsnetters make of that then?" while DH just burst out laughing and said "Bitty!"

The weird blonde kid (son of Cersei?) looks like Aled Jones. That's not a compliment.

CatPower · 18/05/2011 18:26

I've just ordered the rest of the books, and will get the dvd boxset when it's released!

Also - Jon Snow is ridiculously hot. That is all.

SummerRain · 18/05/2011 18:41

Really?... My mental image of Jon Snow was way hotter... I was quite disappointed Blush >

CatPower · 18/05/2011 18:54

I feel filthy for finding the actor attractive, although to be fair he's 24 so it's not that bad...

SummerRain · 18/05/2011 18:56

Only three years younger than me so not too bad. Will have to paste his face on my mental Jon Snow and sacrifice some hotness for not feeling like a lecharous old woman Grin

CatPower · 18/05/2011 19:00

Only three years younger than me too! Phew, I feel like less of a grubby old lady now! Grin

KaraStarbuckThrace · 18/05/2011 20:07

Pawsnclaws - yeah I think Joffrey has a face you just want to slap!

I'm sure the actor who plays him is very nice in real life Smile

OP posts:
MrsRhettButler · 19/05/2011 09:28

Yes, Jon snow = HOTT Grin

He's too young for me though :(

TrillianAstra · 19/05/2011 09:31

Joffrey is channeling a bit of Malfoy, don't you think?

MrsWicket · 19/05/2011 13:40

which books are they based on? Am watching and enjoying the series but it would be fun to read the books.

TrillianAstra · 19/05/2011 14:00

Start here - be warned the series isn't finished yet but there's plenty of reading to do.

CatPower · 19/05/2011 14:01

MrsWicket, they're based on the "A Song Of Ice And Fire" series by G.R.R. Martin. You can find them all on Amazon. Smile So far there's four (although book 3 is enormous so it's split into two), with book five about to be published. There's going to be seven altogether, although with a five year gap between book three and four, and six years between four and five, I wouldn't be rushing to finish them in time for book six. Wink

SummerRain · 19/05/2011 15:47

I just hope he doesn't go and do a Robert Jordan on us before it's done.

15 years of my life reading bloody Wheel of Time and the fucker died without finishing it.... maybe we should start sending George health food vouchers and vitamin supplements?

Or he could develop dementia or alzheimers like poor Terry Pratchett.... best add Ginkgo Bilbao to the mailing list.

And maybe a gym membership, he's not in the best shape.... real risk of heart disease there.

Oh dear lord... I hope he doesn't smoke Shock We're doomed to never know how it ends if he does.
