Just wondering what you are making of it so far!

Casting on the whole is very good, a few things have been changed but have been thinking of what is to come.

Not looking forward to seeing Viserys (even though he deserves it, the arrogant twat!)

Or worse what Theon does when he loses Rickon and Bran!!

My favourite portayal is definitely Peter Drinklage's Tyrion Lannister, he is fab!!

Still a bastard Jubato - Rhaegar was married to Elia of Dorne. Robert has loads of bastards but none of them are eligible to inherit anything.

TrillianAstra · 13/05/2011 09:02

If he is then it's a bloody good thing he takes after the Starks or else he'd stand out a bit...

kennypowers · 13/05/2011 09:12

TrillianAstra - I think we're going to see a lot more of the Direwolves, two of them (Ghost and Summer) become increasingly important and I'm not sure they could rewrite the story to disregard this.

Personally, I'm waiting for a lot more of The Hound.

Also, did anybody notice Wilko Johnson as Sir Ilyn Payne (sp?). When I read he'd been cast I thought it was a Wikipedia mistake, but apparently not.

TrillianAstra · 13/05/2011 09:18

More of the Hound, definitely. And I'd like to see his brother without armour and not on a horse.

raindroprhyme · 13/05/2011 11:34

is the hounds brother the mountain? that was a lovely horse he had for the jousting.

Twit · 13/05/2011 11:35

I have watched them all through now and I have a theory. (probably completely wrong though)
The nasty weird little blond kid is the brother and sisters offspring. He has a look about him (although I suppose he could just be mean)
I wondered if Jon Snow was Lady Stark's sisters child (and Ned) or the uncle's (who took him to the wall)

So some-one major dies hmm? I'm guessing Ned 'cos he's played by Sean pantsoffand/ordead Bean. Or the King maybe. I hope Tyrion makes it 'cos he's funny.

Twit · 13/05/2011 11:37

Actually WRT JOn Snow being the sister's, surely she'd hate her sister too and it didn't seem as if she did. SO forget that (unless it's right Wink )

tegan · 13/05/2011 11:40

i haven't seen any of this but dh did comment yesterday "i'm really pleased i started watching game of thrones, that one out of hollyoaks is in it stripped down to the gear box". I'm so glad i married an interlectual man...

TrillianAstra · 13/05/2011 11:41

Twit - I htink the theory is that Jon Snow belongs to Ned's dead sister. Not Catelyn's (alive) sister. And as far as we know she doens't know who he belongs to.

Booboostoo · 13/05/2011 11:58

I love the books and can't wait for the next one (I'll eat my foot if it comes out in time, it's been delayed for ages), but I think it will be decades before he finishes the series. The last book currently in print just goes off in a tangent (OK one of three thousand tangents!) and introduces a whole host of new characters, while the new volume will need to go back in time just to catch up with current characters!

KaraStarbuckThrace · 13/05/2011 12:07

Lysa and Catelyn married Jon Arryn and Ned Stark at the same time. It is presumed that Lysa Arryn then went to The Eeryie(SP) so she couldn't be Jon's mother anyway.

Lyanna as Jon's mother is looking very likely but I don't think it'll be revealed in this series. Perhaps in book 5? But I am not sure how, the people who would know by book 5 are dead or inaccessible to Jon.

Twit - time will tell if you are right Grin think we will be finding out fairly soon... only 3 more sleeps til the next episode!!

Seing as GRRM has no problem with killing off sympathetic major characters I'm sure he would also have no problem with leaving major mysteries completely unsolved.

interesting article here on how many of the characters have been "flattened" when moving from book to screen.

TrillianAstra · 15/05/2011 16:19

Btw

"Varys is a eunuch, you know"
"Everyone knows that"
"Well I thought I'd better mention it for the viewers"
"OK, well in that case he is an untrustworthy eunuch, remind them"

CatPower · 15/05/2011 17:13

The only theory I've read is that Jon Snow is Ned's sister Lyanna's baby, not Catelyn's sister Lysa who is as mad as a box of frogs. The idea is that Lyanna died in childbirth, told Ned who the father was and made him promise to raise him as his own, and tell no-one of his parentage.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 15/05/2011 18:47

Thanks TA, that was a really interesting article!

SummerRain · 15/05/2011 19:09

CatPower... I've been thinking the same thing about Jon for the last few books and if you read them whilst keeping that in your mind there are a few hints along the way which suggest we could be right.

But with George RR Martin who knows.... he may never tell us. He certainly doesn't go for the typical fantasy story lines; downtrodden character goes on a voyage, during voyage he learns to fight/use magic, saves kingdom and learns remarkable truth about self/falls in love with heir to throne, downtrodden character lives happily ever after.

I love the books... I strongly recommend reading them before watching tbh.... judging by dp some of it makes no sense whatsoever without the background!

I do wonder how they're going to some of the upcoming story lines though... i had assumed they'd increase the age of the characters but they don't seem to have I mean Sansa and the Dog? or Sansa and who she's with at the end of the 5th book? [boak]

And what happens to Arya and Bran and Rickon at various points... traumatic enough reading it... how would they get it past the censors on tv?!

SummerRain · 15/05/2011 20:37

Trillian, that article was very good , as was the similar one the author linked to.

I have to admit I was very annoyed watching that scene too as for me her wedding night i the book was the moment we saw a gentle, loving Khal Drogo and we understood why she loved him. Her falling in love with him in the series after being raped on her wedding night just seems unbelievable to me.

TrillianAstra · 15/05/2011 21:11

It's really annoying, but he may not have respected her in the beginning but he's still a hell of a lot better than Viserys!

Note for anyone who hasn't read - the Targaryens (like some dynasties of the Pharoahs in Ancient Egypt) had a tradition of havign brothers and sisters marry so as not to dilute the royal blood.

TrillianAstra · 16/05/2011 08:37

I meant even in the TV series Drogo is a much better bet than Viserys.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 16/05/2011 11:14

Oh yes, DH (who has never read the books) was commenting on what a nasty piece of work Viserys is.

Yey next episode tonight!

Quite a few characters do not have happy endings at all in the book. And I agree that some of the events which are quite nasty in the books may end up being diluted in some way in the series to make it past the censors.

TrillianAstra · 16/05/2011 21:51

I am watching right now (about 1/2 hr behind)

Nice going with the Mountain/Knightof Flowers/Hound. The Knight of Flowers does look like nearly as cocky a young man as Joffrey though.

kitkatya · 16/05/2011 23:36

Surely they havent killed Sean Bean off???

TrillianAstra · 16/05/2011 23:38

He was hit in the thigh, main characters can survive flesh wounds. Someone les important might bleed out or get infected but a spear to the thigh isn't going to stop Ned Stark.

mutter mutter mutter shhhhhh

kitkatya · 16/05/2011 23:44

god, i fancy him. What was it with that breast feeding 8 year old?? I wanted to boak!

SummerRain · 17/05/2011 00:40

Robert Arryn is 5, in the books at least. If that creeped you out i'd stop watching if I were you... Far worse to come.

I'm disappointed with what they've done to Renly's character, he was never so weak and whining in the books
