Just wondering what you are making of it so far!

Casting on the whole is very good, a few things have been changed but have been thinking of what is to come.

Not looking forward to seeing Viserys (even though he deserves it, the arrogant twat!)

Or worse what Theon does when he loses Rickon and Bran!!

My favourite portayal is definitely Peter Drinklage's Tyrion Lannister, he is fab!!

"Doing a Robert Jordan" not so bad if you do it right. Make lots of notes, tell someone how it ends, and the books come out a lot faster than they would if RJ had been still writing them.

SummerRain · 19/05/2011 16:36

Ah, but they're not quite the same are they? I've only read the first Brandon Sanderson WoT book but it had a very different feel to the rest of the series and that would kill Song of Ice and Fire if similar happened as it's the modd and feel of them that sets them apart from other fantasy.

Plus George has stated that although he has a vague idea what will happen at the end he doesn't have a plan or a story arc planned at all Shock [gibbers in corner]

Though the worst culprit yet was Douglas Adams... the sod died while writing the damn book.... I'll never know what the rhino was for now!

TrillianAstra · 19/05/2011 16:41

I think the BS ones do still feel like Wheel of Time books.

If GRRM doesn't have a plan we are in trouble. Maybe that's why it's taking so long - he hasn't a clue what's going to happen next! I bet we never find out the truth about Jon's mother.

SummerRain · 19/05/2011 16:50

Joe Abercrombie interviewed him and it was shown on sky just before the series started and he said he wrote the first chapter without even knowing what it was and just kept going. He describes himself as a 'gardener' as opposed to an 'architect' when it comes to writing.

Couldn't find a clip of that interview but here he is saying similar

I thin Jon's mother is either going to be the pivotal end story conclusion or it'll just fizzle to nothing and never be mentioned again.

kennypowers · 20/05/2011 09:47

My guess is that Daenerys makes it across the narrow sea in book 6. Queue war in the seven kingdoms with various hordes of living and undead coming south from beyond the Wall.

kennypowers · 20/05/2011 09:47

Cue not queue, obviously.

stealthsquiggle · 20/05/2011 09:53

Whaaaaaat? It's one of those intensely annoying not-yet-finished series Shock? DH didn't tell me that when he lent me the books.

Tyrion is great. Arya is going to be good too.

Surely the child Cersei is wittering on about is the one she got rid of deliberately?

Any Lysa is clearly nuts in the book - breastfeeding 7-8yo son is just visual shorthand for her complete smothering of him.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 20/05/2011 09:54

Yes I am worried about GRRM dying as well!!

Now more so that he hasn't actually got the story arc written out

Jack Gleeson definitely was inspired by Draco Malfoy, think you were right there, Trillian!

stealthsquiggle - Arya kicks ass. It's not clear at the moment in the books what's going to happen to her, but I think she'll end up being very important. Or dead, which can never be ruled out completely for any character.

TrillianAstra · 20/05/2011 10:30

I think the chlid Cersei is "wittering on about" :) is a new invention for the TV series to add depth ot her character and ake her more likeable.

stealthsquiggle · 20/05/2011 11:05

kenny - yes, where I have got to in the books Arya is definitely kicking ass, but it is as yet unclear to what end.

DH was deeply disturbed by the fact that characters you get attached to keep getting killed Grin (in the books)

SummerRain · 20/05/2011 11:13

Cersei definitely never gave birth to Robert's babies in the books. She did her utmost to avoid conceiving his children but if she did she aborted. The child in the series who died of fever is an entirely new invention, as is her softer side tbh. In the books she's cold, ruthless and entirely selfish.

CatPower · 20/05/2011 11:45

I thought that maybe Cersei was making the whole thing up about the baby that died from a fever, to try and get rid of any thoughts of suspicion from Catelyn's head...?

SummerRain · 20/05/2011 11:46

No, she discussed it with Robert too in the last episode.

CatPower · 20/05/2011 11:54

Ah okay, I've only seen up to episode three. I'll catch up!

kennypowers · 23/05/2011 12:20

Tonight's episode is titled 'A Golden Crown'. Nods and winks to those who have read the books.

SummerRain · 23/05/2011 12:28

Excellant Grin One of the best bits in the books... hope they're faithful to the books for this at least.

ChristinaEliopolis · 23/05/2011 12:55

I am absolutely loving this series - it's been a long time since I was this desperate to see the next episode. I am now half way through the first book and am Officially Hooked.

I am finding it hard to understand why everybody's age has been shuffled up a few years though (although, even though I hold a big candle for the gorgeous Sean Bean, he will never pass for thirty five again Wink)

SummerRain · 23/05/2011 13:49

I think it's to make it more acceptable to a modern audience who might not be as used to the concept of young teens being treated as adults as those of us who read a fair bit of fantasy.

Certainly as the books go on there are a lot of key events concerning very young children/teenagers which are quite disturbing largely because of the age of the character involved (Sansa and Arya's stories specifically) and not only would it be unlikely that these scenes would pass censorship but people probably wouldn't want to see them.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 23/05/2011 13:53

Yes there are some sexual situations that happen to the girls which would make the audience some what uncomfortable. Basically young girls would be married off and expected to consummate their marriage as soon as they had their first period (hence Cercei asking Sansa this question in an earlier episode).

Oooh I am looking forward to tonights ep, but promised DH not to watch it as he is taking DSS out tonight, fingers crossed he won't be back too late so we can watch it when he gets in!

kennypowers · 23/05/2011 14:19

I believe George RR Martin has said that if he started the books again, he would increase the ages of the younger characters by a couple of years, mainly the reasons mentioned by SummerRain and Kara.

TrillianAstra · 23/05/2011 14:30

Once you've started your periods you are fair game for impregnating, pretty much.

ThisIsMySobriquet · 23/05/2011 14:39

SPOILER

I cried after reading the chapter where Ned Stark was beheaded, it's going to be interesting to see how the characters develop in the series to take over the role of such a focused on character. The book carries on regardless but it took me a while to actually understand he had just died. I'm looking forward to see Theon becoming a central character in the next series.

kennypowers · 23/05/2011 15:38

Mmm, not sure Theon becomes important (or even features much) in the next book, but he does eventually. And not because he does anything nice.

ChristinaEliopolis · 23/05/2011 15:58

I'm trying very hard not to look at that spoiler....................Grin

Yes, I'd forgotten that Danys was only thirteen when she married Drogho. In that light, and if there are more plotlines like it, it makes sense if they are all older.
