Just wondering what you are making of it so far!

Casting on the whole is very good, a few things have been changed but have been thinking of what is to come.

Not looking forward to seeing Viserys (even though he deserves it, the arrogant twat!)

Or worse what Theon does when he loses Rickon and Bran!!

My favourite portayal is definitely Peter Drinklage's Tyrion Lannister, he is fab!!

Kitkaya - the ironmonger's son is King Robert's bastard. His hair colour is significant.

Kiery - they have definitely soften Catlyn - in the books she is the one that pushed Ned to becoming the Hand of the King because she wanted to find out what happened to her BIL as she feared for her sister (who suspected her husband had been murdered). Ned was the one who didn't want to go.

Sorry it was Aerys the mad king, Aegon was the infant son of Rhenaeys.

Jaime was the youngest of the Kingsguard as well, not the Hand! - it has been a while since I read the book!

I had already mentioned that Rhenaeys had died in battle - Robert him.
His wife Elia was raped by the Mountain (the big fellow that killed that knight at the Joust in the last episode) before he murdered her and her infant son and saw that her young daughter was also brutally murdered Sad

Theon Greyjoy - another I forgot will become very significant. He was the youngest son of Balor Greyjoy who attempted an uprising against King Robert and was put down by the Starks. Can't remember why he became Ned's ward though.

5th book is out in July - can't wait!!!!

I was discussing things with a friend who introduced me to the books, and he reckons there are a few major things that may change. He even speculated a major character death might not happen because of who plays him! I really hope they don't do this as that death is extremely pivotal to what happens next...

Crossposted with Bettys. Cersei is not the mother, but the ironmonger's son's mother was also a blond.

Loving Game of Thrones (and have read the books) except for having to pause each episode to update dp on what's happening and who's who.

This is especially difficult when I have to try and remember not to give away any spoilers.

Anybody who likes the series but hasn't read the books is in for some BIG surprises before the end.

Also, believe series 2 has now been commissioned.

'Hodor!'

HODOR!

TrillianAstra · 12/05/2011 11:48

"Can't remember why he became Ned's ward though."

Ward = hostage (although the Starks treated him well).

So do we all think it will end at the end of book 1?

I think the series might only go up as far as when, erm, someone is supposed to take the black, but the king ignores his advisors and goes for a different option... If you know what I mean.

(I am just corecting names, Rhaegar is the prince, Rhaenys is his little daughter who was killed by the Mountain)

TA - I really need to read them again don't I Grin
I've been holding off until the 7th book is published, and the TV series is finished.

Prince Rhaegar had something to do with the death of Lyanna Stark didn't?

There are also way more characters in the books as well!

kennypowers · 12/05/2011 12:24

As far as I know, the plan is to make one series = one book. If it gets to series 3/4 then 'A Storm of Swords' will be rejigged, so that the events happen in chronological order rather than split between characters and happening simultaneously as in the books.

I have to say, I hadn't read much fantasy since my early teenage years before I got into these, but it's really rekindled my interest - Joe Abercrombie is next on my reading list.

CatPower · 12/05/2011 13:30

I can't be the only one who thinks Ned is actually Jon Snow's uncle, not father, and that his sister Lyanna was his mother, and that is the big secret she made him promise to keep?

bettys · 12/05/2011 14:03

What's with 'Hodor'?
It's rude to shout (and not explain!)

kennypowers · 12/05/2011 14:34

Hodor is one of the characters (currently) in the Stark's Winterfell castle. He carried Bran down to the hall to meet Tyrion Lannister where he was given the design for the modified saddle. The only thing Hodor has ever been heard to say is...'Hodor!'

KaraStarbuckThrace · 12/05/2011 14:53

CatPower - there is certainly something secretive about Jon Snow's origins.
You could well be on to something. It could well have been Prince Rhaeger - now that would be a turn up for the books! Perhaps Lyanna died in childbirth? I don't think it is known how she died, just that when Ned found her she was dying.

OP posts:
TrillianAstra · 12/05/2011 18:50

Lots of people are telling Jon Snow that they'll talk next time they see him... (in the show at least).

TrillianAstra · 12/05/2011 18:51

Given that George R R Martin is a bastard who likes killing off charcters that people like, what are the odds that we never find out who Jon Snow's mother is, or what the Ned promised to Lyanna as she died?

bettys · 12/05/2011 19:14

I want more Direwolf action

TrillianAstra · 12/05/2011 19:31

Are the wolves going to get bigger? They just look like dogs at the moment.

raindroprhyme · 12/05/2011 22:06

loving this not into fanatasy at all but DH promised i would love it.
Still have to keep pausing and doing a recap of who is who.
glad i have found this thread that list has helped lots.

TrillianAstra · 12/05/2011 22:42

When it comes out on DVD I think it should have a special subtitle track, not saying what people are saying but saying who they are.

"Tyrion Lannister, brother of the Queen"

"Theon Greyjoy, ward/hostage of the Starks, from the Iron Islands"

"Varys "The Spider", Eunuch, royal advisor, untrustworthy"

KaraStarbuckThrace · 13/05/2011 05:32

Absolutely!
I don't remember Myrcella getting introduced and kept thinking to myself "I'm sure Robert and Cersei had 3 children" and racking my brains to remember who the 3rd child was!

OP posts:
Jubato · 13/05/2011 07:55

given that Jon is younger than Robb and Lyanna died before Robert married Cersei and the death of the Mad King, I don't think Jon can be her son, can he?

Been a while since I read them, have I got the timeline wrong? Confused

TrillianAstra · 13/05/2011 08:52

I'm not sure if Jon is younger than Rob or the same age - did Ned go off to war (again) leaving Catelyn pregnant, or was Rob already born?

I think they were both born during the war. The war took a few years.

Anyone noticed that all the children are 1-2 years older than they should be? Bran is 10, Rickon has not even been seen but has been referred to as 6. Sansa shouldn't be 13 until book 2 or 3. I'm assuming it's so that they can hire older/better actors, and to make it less squick (because Danaerys's age is tied in to how long ago the war was).

Jubato · 13/05/2011 09:00

Wait, do you mean Lyanna and Rhaegar? That makes Jon ... Oooo....!

Oooooo! Does that make him a bastard or true heir after Viserys? What about Dany then... I quite like Dany.

TrillianAstra · 13/05/2011 09:00

So....

Ned and Catelyn married at the beginning of the war.

The war lasted at least a year.

Dany was born at the very end of the war (Stormborn and all that), on Dragonstone, and was sneaked away along with Viserys (who is getting a gold crown very soon I hope).

Robert and Cersei got married at the end of the war

After the war, Ned turned up with baby Jon, no mention of how 'baby' he was exactly.

Lyanna had been Rhaegar's prisoner the whole time, so plenty of time for her to get pregnant, but also plenty of time for Ned to have gotten someone else pregnant.
