My ds 14 is about 5ft 3, he grows steadily at the moment I'd say. When did you ds have their biggest growth spurt? I always remember my mum talking about my brother when she bought him clothes at the beginning of summer holidays and he had completely grown out of them by the end but I don't remember when she said.

I'm not worried about my sons height, I'm just interested to know! :-)

My ds is almost 14. He has had a major growth spurt the past 8 months or so, from 5'1" to 5'7".

I'm interested to see what others say. I think boys can often have very late growth spurts in their late teens as well.

DS had his biggest growth spurt during the summer after leaving secondary school before going to sixth form (so last summer) He was a late bloomer and most of his friends had done the bulk of their growing by then which caused him some angst. But he shot up and now is taller than most of them. He has also filled out over the last six months. DH continued to grow in height until his early 20's - so we anticipate there's more to come!

FreezerBird · 02/06/2021 18:21

My ds is 16 and about 5'7". He had a huge growth spurt in early adolescence (went from being one of the shortest in his year to the tallest, then they all caught up!) and is hoping for another before he stops growing. He's just taller than me but would like to be his dad's height (6').

BalloonSlayer · 02/06/2021 18:27

I would say the majority of boys have it in year 9 - but that spans age 13 and 1 day to nearly 15.

Some have it in year 6 and are mortified, some don't have it till year 11 and are mortified.

My youngest was 12 when he had his. He is 13 now and a full head taller than his friends but I think he is OK with it.

In Clive James' memoirs he describes never having a growth spurt and being desperate for one. Although he ended up over 6' tall he just grew steadily throughout his teens.

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 02/06/2021 18:30

My ds is 20 and still growing.

Hes never had a spurt as such but has slowly gathered pace, he's just over 6ft now. And has grown a couple of inches since the start of lockdown.

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/06/2021 18:32

Ds1 is 16 and 5 foot 6. He hasn’t grown for a couple of years and never really had a growth spurt. I’m hoping it isn’t too late but he’s been static for ages

gegs73 · 02/06/2021 18:38

DS1 is about 6 foot aged 17. He never had a huge spurt as such just steady (very slow) growth. Actually he grew about 3 inches in the last year, that’s about as drastic as it got, but before that maybe a couple of cm a year, some years none.

Forgetmenot82 · 02/06/2021 18:40

Sounds like it varies so much! I remember growing an inch around age 19 which is really unusual for a girl I think.

That's interesting, I wasn't thinking boys grew much more after secondary!

I work with teenagers.

I've noticed that most boys have an initial growth spurt/voice deepening around Year 9, then have a later 'turning into a man' growth spurt in the sixth form. The sixth form boys look like sunflowers at the moment: gangly with a mop.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 02/06/2021 18:44

DS2 was 13 going into the first lockdown and was about the same height as me (5ft1). By the time we were allowed to see my mum again he was taller than her. (5ft5)
So he grew about 4-5 inches in, what? 12 weeks?

MiddlesexGirl · 02/06/2021 18:44
  1. Huge growth spurt. More than 6". Now taller than me. And hugely more confident.
AledsiPad · 02/06/2021 18:45

DS1 was 13, he is now 14 and 6ft tall, size 11 feet and beginning to fill out a bit.

DS2 is 13 now and although he's grown a bit over the last few weeks, it's not the spurt. He's a bit miffed because some of his friends have had theirs but to be honest, most of them haven't. Almost all of his close friends still look like children rather than mini adults.

I agree that it seems to be year 9, usually, so I'm expecting it from him relatively soon!

kittycrackles · 02/06/2021 18:48

My just 14 year old has grown massively this last year. He is nearly 5’10” now and has size 10 feet. My older adult boys are shorter than him. I expect he will hit 6 foot at some point.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 02/06/2021 18:49

Mine has just had a massive one over the last 12 months. He is nearly 13. He's always been quite an early bloomer though, mist of his friends haven't got to that point yet, only a couple fo them seem to be at the same stage as him.

RestingStitchFace · 02/06/2021 18:55

My brother suddenly shot up 6 inches around 14/15....

BonnyEm · 02/06/2021 18:56

Looking at this thread I think it varies. My 15 year old has shot up over the past 12 months and lost a shed load of puppy fat too despite not doing anymore exercise or eating less.

C0nstance · 02/06/2021 18:58

My son has been 5'10 for nearly a year now. He is 15 and 3 months old. He shot up between 13 and 14.

cptartapp · 02/06/2021 18:58

DS1 is 18 and 6ft 4. He shot up between 17-18 and is now filling out.
DS2 is just 16 and 6ft 1. He's growing more steadily. Still skinny.
Both DH and I are tall.

Dramalady52 · 02/06/2021 19:07

Having worked in schools for 20 years I can attest that the summer between year 9 and year 10, is the peak point for the male growth spurt. Obviously, some are earlier and some later, but the amount of boys who left for the hols with a height of 5.3 and came back 6.0 was always a shock! So 13 to 14 years old. However, my own boy never had a growth spurt as such, just quietly grew at a steady pace.

purplesequins · 02/06/2021 19:12

both mine had an enormous spurt at 13/14. went from about 5.7 to 6ft between may & christmas.

StiggyZardust · 02/06/2021 19:13

No real growth spurt, he's grown constantly since about the age of 13. He's nearly 19 and still growing, at 6'5" I hope he stops soon!

Maybe that will happen to my yr 9 boy then! He's He's one of the shortest in his year! He doesn't seem to mind too much though.
