When do teenage boys have their biggest growth spurt on average?

My ds 14 is about 5ft 3, he grows steadily at the moment I'd say. When did you ds have their biggest growth spurt? I always remember my mum talking about my brother when she bought him clothes at the beginning of summer holidays and he had completely grown out of them by the end but I don't remember when she said.

I'm not worried about my sons height, I'm just interested to know! :-)

My oldest had most of his growth spurt at 12 and shot up to 6ft in a year (6ft3 adult height)

my youngest was all sad about not getting his growth spurt in year 7. Not in yr 8 either… despaired then got his growth spurt at 14, and at 17 has just grown a bit more to 6ft 5

It’s extraordinary how quick boys can grow.

DS2 best friend was the smallest boy in the class, hated being small, and at 15 shot up to 6ft as well

@Remmy123 for my boys it went hand in hand with puberty

My DS was always one of the tallest.
Huge growth spurt during yr 9 and yr 10.
Now in yr 11 and he's 6.ft 6in.
Seems to have stopped growing now - thank goodness.

I have noticed with some of the other very taller ones in his year, that they stopped growing in yr 10 and others are now catching up/exceeding their height.

Boys can still grow in their late teens/ early twenties.
My dneph grew four inches between the ages of 17 and 18

No.1 was always tall but never really had a spurt, he just kept slowly growing. At 18yo he's done I think, or at least the growth is imperceptible.

No.2 shot up around 14 and by the end of year 9 was the tallest in his school, including the teachers. He's still going at 17, it's getting ridiculous.

DS was always the tallest in his year until yr7/8 when many of his friends caught up. He has always had a steady increase in height of around 7/8cm year ( we have a record on a wall) but had his major growth spurt around 16 and is now 6’3” (maybe taller). He was a latish developer and still hasn’t fully finished puberty so will probably grow another inch or two.
Boys tend to put on weight then shoot up.
The locust like eating binges start when they are bulking out and building adult male bodies which is at the end of puberty 17-25. My DS eats about 5000cal a day just to maintain his weight. He has lost a lot of weight over Christmas because he has had this flu bug and has not eaten much, well he’s eaten 2-3k cal a day.

Mine had his when he was 13.

He's age 14 now and is 6ft with UK size 12 shoes!

At 13 DS was about 5’3. He started really growing about 5 months later and was 5’7 by 14. He’s just turned 15 and is 5’11. Still skinny, barely more than peach fuzz on his top lip so I think he’s still got some growing to do.

My ds is 16 and about 5'7". He had a huge growth spurt in early adolescence (went from being one of the shortest in his year to the tallest, then they all caught up!) and is hoping for another before he stops growing. He's just taller than me but would like to be his dad's height (6').

My ds did the same. He's 16 now, 5ft 9 and I'm wondering if he's going to grow a few more inches to match his dad.

Ds1 is 16 and 5 foot 6. He hasn’t grown for a couple of years and never really had a growth spurt. I’m hoping it isn’t too late but he’s been static for ages

@HasaDigaEebowai
Did he grow after this?

Mine was one of the tallest in his class/year until he was about 12. Then they all caught up and some ‘overtook’ him. When he was 16 though he started to grow faster again and is now 6ft 3 and 17. His dad is 6ft 2 and I am 5ft 4.

@Shelby10
This is interesting. Where was he in puberty at this time? My 16 yo son has quite a bit of facial hair now and I feel like he is getting broader at the moment, but I'm not sure if he's going to grow any taller.

Passthecake30 · 12/10/2023 07:26

My ds has grown 5” between being 14.5 - 15.5, and is now 5ft 11 and still growing 1cm a month. And from a size 6 in shoe to a 9, expensive year! Voice not broken and only a bit of upper lip fuzz. He was a bit of a later starter amongst his friends and they teased him, didn’t believe that he would eventually be on the taller side (I’m 6ft).

gegs73 · 12/10/2023 10:30

With my two, I found that once their voice broke, they grew for roughly 2 years after that. Quite quick for about a year then slowing down.

Passthecake30 · 12/10/2023 11:06

Oh jeez if that’s true, and we have 2 more years of growing, my son will be a giant as his voice is that of an 12 yr old atm!

shockedballoon · 14/10/2023 11:56

12.5ish to 13.5 seems to have been the most growth-spurty for my son. He went from about 5 4 to 5 10ish. He's definitely slowed down a lot, (14 very soon) though has reached 5 11.

DH is 6 4 (his brothers and dad are all 6ft or over) and DS is hoping to squeeze one more inch out so he can be in 6ft crew.
