When do teenage boys have their biggest growth spurt on average?

My ds 14 is about 5ft 3, he grows steadily at the moment I'd say. When did you ds have their biggest growth spurt? I always remember my mum talking about my brother when she bought him clothes at the beginning of summer holidays and he had completely grown out of them by the end but I don't remember when she said.

I'm not worried about my sons height, I'm just interested to know! :-)

@HasaDigaEebowai

Ds1 is 16 and 5 foot 6. He hasn’t grown for a couple of years and never really had a growth spurt. I’m hoping it isn’t too late but he’s been static for ages
Everyone seems to vary so much. He may grow later or he may have stopped. I'm not expecting my ds to be very tall based on our heights. How tall are you? I'm not sure if it's strictly true about children always being taller than their parents?

My 14yo DS has just started to shoot up. I think he's grown about 1.5 inches in about 6 weeks. He's sort of grown outwards as well as upwards - but not in a getting fatter way. His face looks wider as well as longer - everything is bigger scale.

cookiecreampie · 03/06/2021 09:09

My DS is 12 and he has just had a growth spurt but don't think it'll be his biggest one. His feet have gone from a size 6 to a 9 in just over a year.

cookiecreampie · 03/06/2021 09:10

Hes about 5 foot 7.

AliMonkey · 03/06/2021 09:12

DS just turned 14 and has grown about six inches in the last 9 months. Has also started getting lots of spots, a moustache, significantly lower voice, needing deodorant, eating huge amounts (whilst still being very slim) and taking an interest in his appearance. Still no enthusiasm for anything other than gaming though!

CatherinedeBourgh · 03/06/2021 09:13

Ds is 14 and almost 6 ft. He Has grown 1 cm a month for the past two years. I’m hoping he’s going to stop soon, but he’s giving no signs ofit yet.

WeAllHaveWings · 03/06/2021 10:17

ds(17) has sprouted over the last year. At least 2 shoe sizes (12-12.5 now) and around 3-4 inches (now 6ft 2in) and much broader over the shoulders.

Last year he was the same height has me, could still wear youth XL or age 16ish sizes, now he is in an adult medium (and brands cost a fortune!)

iduno · 03/06/2021 10:30

I know my dh says he was on tall side but not the tallest in the class as a kid. He says he had a big growth spurt about 16 when he overtook everyone and he's 6ft4 now.

My nephew probably grew quite a bit at 14, I think he's still got more growing to do and he'll end up at least 6ft.

CompleteBarstool · 03/06/2021 10:36

DS shot up towards the end of Year 11/beginning of Year 12.

He's one of the youngest in his year and was one of the shortest for ages

MrsMackesy · 03/06/2021 10:42

look like sunflowers at the moment: gangly with a mop.

I like this and am going to steal it.

Beardie03 · 03/06/2021 10:57

Does anyone think that kids are a lot taller these days?? Grin

Algebraicyourleg · 03/06/2021 11:04

I usually find that my Year9 boys leave at one height and then are giants in Year 10 or the same in the summer from Year 10 to Year 11.

ragged · 03/06/2021 11:42

DS1: age 13.5-14.5
Ds2: age 15-16
DS3: recently 13 & not had one yet
DH: 15-16

My grandfather grew 3 inches between age 19 & 22.

ragged · 03/06/2021 11:43

ps: just remembering my dad was always a giant among peers, hit 6'2" by age 14, and grew more after that.

petitdonkey · 03/06/2021 11:49

My ds will be 17 next month and has recently gained weight rapidly and has so many stretch marks on his body- has anyone else experienced this? I don’t want to make him super body conscious but he has always been slim and now all the weight is in his belly which I think is worrysome...

(Op, I hope you don’t mind the question. He grew massively in height from 12-14 then slowed right down)

GoldenBlue · 03/06/2021 11:50

Varies enormously. One of mine had a huge growth spurt at 12/13 and went from age 12's to men's longs in a year. One of mine has grown slowly and steadily through secondary school. My cousin grew nearly a whole foot aged 16. We all tended to continue growing up until around age 20 but slower then.

I believe that boys are always taller than their mothers unless there is a medical issue. Other than that they are likely to be taller if their fathers are taller too.

When you look at a room full of 15/16 year olds the variance is huge between kids that look like teachers/parents and kids that look like kids.

Try not to fret :)

blahblahblah321 · 03/06/2021 11:51

DS1 - I think he was about 14, shot up from 5ft 8 to 6ft 2 in a matter of months

DS2 - his growth is distorted due to a medical condition so he had a huge growth spurt around aged 11-12

user1487194234 · 03/06/2021 11:53

MY DS grew 6 inches in school holidays when 17
Now 18 1/2 still growing, eating my out of house and home and still very skinny

Terrylovesyogurt · 03/06/2021 12:02

My DS was 5'2 at 10yo at the start of the first lockdown. A yr later, now 11, he's 5'10! People keep asking me what I've been feeding him over the past year. He's a whole head higher than lots his age.

His dad is 6'4 though, so I expect he'll be over 6' by the time he's finished growing.

Cactusowl · 03/06/2021 12:07

DS shot up just before he turned 12, he’s just turned 13 - he went from 5 ft 1 to 5 ft 8 and he’s still growing. He was on the 75th percentile for height for a while so has always been taller but has crept up and is nearly on the 99.6th. Weight wise he’s gone from 75th to 91st which explains why he looks gangly!

KarensChoppyGob · 03/06/2021 12:13

Ds is 16 now but dramatically shot up aged 14-15 from about 5ft 7 or 8 to 6ft 1. He's around 6 2 now so growth seems to be levelling off.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 03/06/2021 12:15

Ds1 year 9, grew 12cm in a year.
Ds2 also year 9 over first bloody lockdown, thank goodness I had hand me down clothing from Ds1.

He went from a size 6 shoe to a size 10. Had to borrow his brother's shoes to go shoe shopping and be able to leave the house.

KarensChoppyGob · 03/06/2021 12:17

PS I don't think boys are as bothered about how soon they gain height as long as their voices break Smile.

MrsBunHat · 03/06/2021 12:19

15-16 ish here, quite mindboggling spurt - I didn't actually measure but he grew at least a head's height and towered over me within a year. He got a huge row of stretch marks all down his back, but they have faded.
The feet as well - went through 4 sizes from 7-10 in not much more than a year.

The funniest is when people see him after a long gap, which of course is happening a lot with lockdown - they're like "who's that man?"

MaMelon · 03/06/2021 12:20

My just turned 14 year old had a huge growth spurt over the last year - he’s 5’ 10” now, so he grew about 5 or 6 inches in under a year. I think his elder brother was about the same age when he had his growth spurt and then a smaller one around 15 - he’s 6’ 1” like DH, so DS2 is determined not to be in the five foot club like his sister and his mum! They all grow at their own pace though, no-one is the same.
