When do teenage boys have their biggest growth spurt on average?

My ds 14 is about 5ft 3, he grows steadily at the moment I'd say. When did you ds have their biggest growth spurt? I always remember my mum talking about my brother when she bought him clothes at the beginning of summer holidays and he had completely grown out of them by the end but I don't remember when she said.

I'm not worried about my sons height, I'm just interested to know! :-)

Depends on whether they are obese or not. Obese children generally have their main growth spurts earlier and then stop growing earlier. DBs both were low-normal BMIs and had their main growth spurts at 15. One brother had a massive spurt (5 ft 6 to 6 ft) and was in constant pain for a year!
Cameleongirl · 03/06/2021 12:21

I have another sunflower with a mop!🤣

DS is 12, nearly 13, and had a massive growth spurt this past year. He’s about 5’ 6” now and definitely has a way to go-but I think he’s slowed down for now. There’s huge height disparities among his friends right now , the tallest is nearly 6’ whereas others have yet to sprout up. their football team looks odd, some players tower over others, even though they’re all 12/13.

It’s amazing watching puberty in action!

Twins are 12... one has shot up and is now 20cm and 20kg heavier, with a moustache, giant feet and a deep deep voice, the other one...not so much he's hoping for z growth spurt eventually but enjoyed his status as the little big brother for now ;)

MrsBunhat, yes, “who’s that man” Grin

My friend visited and walked through the living room, into the kitchen and asked “who’s the bloke in the living room?” It was DS then 15

We still laugh about that. If I ever write a book about teenagers that will be the title Wink

So yes, y9/y10 it all happens but there are lots of outliers and variations

Men grow until they are 21 Shock

It really is! The deep voices, gangly limbs and huge trainers on these young adults are hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time - where did the gorgeous little boys in their Octonauts t-shirts go?!

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 03/06/2021 12:30

I know, I feel a surge of nostalgia when I see small boys being cute

Then again, teenage boys can be quite sweet in their own way

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 03/06/2021 12:30

... on a good day Wink

My DS was 5'2 at 10yo at the start of the first lockdown. A yr later, now 11, he's 5'10! People keep asking me what I've been feeding him over the past year. He's a whole head higher than lots his age.

His dad is 6'4 though, so I expect he'll be over 6' by the time he's finished growing.

Wow that's some height at 11. My son is 11 and hoping he has a growth spurt soon. Hes the smallest by far among his friends. My guess is hes about 4ft 4. He only wears a size 2 shoe and some age 9-10 clothes are too big on him. His 8 year old brother on the other hand is wearing 12-13
MaMelon · 03/06/2021 12:35

So true! Mine is all over the place - grumpy and monosyllabic one minute, hugging me and telling me he loves me the next (usually when he wants something!). My elder 2 are 21 and 23 so I know they come through it, but oh my word, it can be challenging at times!

itbemay1 · 03/06/2021 12:35

DS is 16 and I'd say in the past 6 months he has shot up he's now 5ft 10 and still going.

BiBabbles · 03/06/2021 12:36

Mine DS1 seems to have a good one each year since he was 13.

He's 16 now and when he put his cadet trousers back on after a year thinking he couldn't have grown that much...yeah...total flooders. Already over 6 ft, not sure how much more he's got left.

banivani · 03/06/2021 12:37

I'd expect it to be one month after buying them a load of new clothes and shoes.

KarensChoppyGob · 03/06/2021 12:38

Women too! I was measured for a medical at the beginning of my pregnancy with DD when I was 22, and again afterwards and had grown an inch.

AmazingGlazing · 03/06/2021 12:42

It was the summer before year 8 here. He'd always been amongst the smallest in class and then suddenly got over half a foot taller in two months. I swear if I'd got him to stand still during that time I could have physically seen him growing; he looked different every day. In September he started sounding a bit hoarse then the voice got deep and woah just like that there's a bloke in the house. His dad actually walked past him in the train station when he came to visit a month later. He's had a couple more since then but none as dramatic as that and now at 17 it's very slow and steady and he's just over 6'2 which is 8 inches taller than me and 3 inches taller than his father. Still has stretch marks on his back from that initial spurt.

CMOTDibbler · 03/06/2021 12:43

Ds has been more of a constant grower than big spurts. He turned 15 a couple of weeks ago and is 6'3, so I guess has a few more inches to go

purplesequins · 03/06/2021 12:50

totally. I buy stuff for schools the day before the term starts. june/july school stuff sales have me bemused. they don't make any sense.
hellcatspangle · 03/06/2021 12:51

About 14-15 think. My DS was 6 foot and size ten feet by 15 and hasn't grown since then although he's got broader.

purplesequins · 03/06/2021 12:52

...and the cry of 'mum I have a blister' followed by realising that the shoes are too small by at least 2 sizes despite only 1month old...

KarensChoppyGob · 03/06/2021 12:55

I've noticed this ! Once he seemed stretched out, almost too thin post-spurt but now broadening.
MaMelon · 03/06/2021 12:56

Oh yes - the endless shoes and trainers Shock DS2 is size 11 now - he’s been told he can get to a 12 and then has to stop as 13s are a nightmare to find.

Dumbledoresgirl · 03/06/2021 12:57

I wouldn't say I noticed a specific growth spurt in any of my 3 sons, not like you describe OP, with new clothes outgrown within months. But they did all overtake me in height when they were 15. I am quite tall for a woman, so I am guessing if they had a spurt, it was roundabout then.

IWishIWasABaller · 03/06/2021 12:59

My son is 14 and is 6'2 . He was always taller than other kids but shot up between 12-14yrs . His feet grew from size 10 to size 13 in one summer Confused He is starting to fill out into a more manly shape now, shoulders getting broad etc.

PopAyetheSailorMam · 03/06/2021 13:01

I didn’t mind the growth spurts but the shoe bill for some one who needs different sport appropriate footware was something else.

PopAyetheSailorMam · 03/06/2021 13:02

CornishGem1975 · 03/06/2021 13:05

My DS has been relatively small for his age but during this year - Year 9 he's started to grow more rapidly. Eating me out of house and home so no signs of slowing at all!
