When do teenage boys have their biggest growth spurt on average?

My ds 14 is about 5ft 3, he grows steadily at the moment I'd say. When did you ds have their biggest growth spurt? I always remember my mum talking about my brother when she bought him clothes at the beginning of summer holidays and he had completely grown out of them by the end but I don't remember when she said.

I'm not worried about my sons height, I'm just interested to know! :-)

Both of my teen boys grew steadily till about 13, they were taller than me by that age but suddenly shot up in year 9 to over 6ft, my 17 year old hasn't grown really since he turned 16, my 15 year old is still growing and is going to be taller than his brother I think.

GloomyWaters · 04/06/2021 00:29

DS was around 13-15
Now 16 and 6ft 2 size 11 shoe

EBathory · 04/06/2021 00:34

End of year 7-9 with my Ds, 6 shoe sizes in less months and more ankle basher trousers than we could cope with.

MaMelon · 04/06/2021 08:32

they are like labradors with Great Dane legs

That’s a perfect description, love it! Grin

JustDanceAddict · 04/06/2021 13:32

Between 13-15 for my DS! He grew 20cm in 2 years - 😱, then another 10cm over the next 2 - we think he’s stopped growing now as last year he only grew 3cm!!

GloomyWaters · 05/06/2021 11:20

So when do they stop growing? What age?

kowari · 05/06/2021 11:49

So when do they stop growing? What age?
16 to 21?

It varies, but probably between 16-21 as kowari says.

Im 5'1 and my son is 15 and 5'10. I dont know where that came from so id be surprised if he grew more, but I remember at a 10 year school reunion i remembering thinking how all the boys were tall now. At 18 some were short so they grew after 18.

BarbarianMum · 05/06/2021 14:54

Hard to say. Ds1 had his first big spurt at 14, ds2 at 13. Be interesting to see what happens next (food/clothing bill is already insane).

It breaks my poor daughter's heart to see how much her brother can eat. I remember feeling like that as a teen. I also had a huge appetite but i got plump, as she is now. Luckily i think the voracious appetite waned by about 22 but I remember being hungry all the time just like a teenage boy

Dd is 14 and over the last 6 months has grown loads. DDs friends came over and didn't recognise him and DSs friends are unrecognisable from pre lockdown.
He's got lots of fluff on his chin. When do they start shaving?

Lampzade · 10/06/2021 08:37

My brother was always on the smaller size (our parents were not tall. My father was 5ft 5 and my mother is 5ft3 . However, my brother grew about five inches between the ages of 17 and 18 and is now just over 6ft
Boys can still grow in their early twenties

Swimmum1206 · 10/06/2021 14:30

DS turned 15 in March. He's always been tall, but we didn't expect anything else as we're both tall - just under 6ft. Last summer (end of YR 9 he had a pretty big growth spurt, but this spring he suddenly shot up even more and is now over 6ft. He's still slim but all muscle due to his swim training. It felt quite strange walking along the street with him the other day and feeling decidedly short!!! He towers over my mum who is only just over 5ft!!

OhWhyNot · 10/06/2021 22:58

Ds is 13 and seems to grow over night

I was looking at photos I took of us in the snow in February he was shorter than me now he is taller by about 1 1/2 inches

His voices deepened very quickly too and he suddenly looks older. Spends a lot of time styling his hair. Suddenly lost the ability to speak and mumbles all the time

muhammadwani27 · 14/11/2021 14:07

my son had a huge growth spurt from 5'8 to 6'2 from year 9 to year 10
now taller than both of us!

Octopus37 · 14/11/2021 22:06

At the start of the first lock down my DS was 12 (he turned 13 in the May) and was about 5ft4 (just shorter than me). By the time he went back to school in September was 5ft9. He's now 5ft11 and I dont think he's quite stopped yet, although I think he'll probably only grow a couple more inches.

Dartsplayer · 14/11/2021 22:28

DS is 14 and 5ft 3in but I'm not too concerned as he is the youngest in his year group and all the boys in my family tend to shoot up when they turn 16/17

Both my sons more or less growing by about 15/16. Perhaps another cm after that.

They are 6'2" and 6'3" though!

I'm 5'10" and my husband is 6'.

Porcupineintherough · 19/11/2021 21:28

With Ds1 it was when he was 14. Ds2 started at 13 but think he's got further to go (his dad's 6'2" and he's always been tall for his age).

I've found that the big spurt happens when their voice breaks and they get spotty, so those are clues that they are about to get going.

Remmy123 · 20/11/2021 11:34

My son is 13 and has only grown 2cm since February - he is under average and we are waiting for a growth spurt, puberty hasn't started yet - wonder if it goes hand on hand?!

Goosefatroasts · 06/01/2023 11:04

@Forgetmenot82

Did your son grow? Tongue in cheek by the way I’m just curious.

I have a year 8 boy who is slim and definitely on the shorter side. He’s also super slim too. It’s affecting his confidence but I do hold out some hope he will grow soon 😂.

I am 5 foot 8 and my husband is 6 foot exactly so we are not that short ourselves.

Was talking to a paed recently who explained that boys tend to grow in two growth spurts of about 10 cm each, plus 5 residual cm.

So boys who start later will have been taller when they have their first growth spurt, and will often end up taller than ones who start earlier.

SirChenjins · 06/01/2023 13:31

13 for both of mine. DS2 came out of covid lockdown around 8 inches taller then he was when we went into it - now almost 16 and is still growing but only a tiny amount. He's the same height as DS1 and DH (6 foot 1)
