Smoking to vaping?

Foxbox · 06/06/2018 11:33

Has anyone succeeded in swapping smoking for vaping?
I can't stand how addicted to cigarettes I am, I wake every morning in panic about my health.
I just can't seem to get myself to stop! In fact the more I think about it, the more I smoke!
I was thinking trying to switch to vaping might be an idea?
Has anyone managed this? Any tips?
Thank you

Hi @patsywine! I'm still here too if you need a stern kicking at any point
Seriously, starting to quit again is really tough. Just 4 cigs in a day is great! Try and get a different flavour liquid too, fresh start and all that. Good luck!!

patsywine · 15/10/2018 21:39

Thanks Bigfish I'm planning on getting some new liquids tomorrow as I'm really not liking the one I've got here. I was back to smoking 20 a day so 4 for today is a good start I think. Tomorrow when I wake, I'll reach for the vape instead of a cig like this morning and see how I go.

How long has it been for you? I lasted over 3 weeks last time I tried on this thread. Hoping this time will be a success!

patsywine · 15/10/2018 21:44

Hi again Fox I'm really happy that you've managed to stick it out from starting this thread. Good on you! I was going through some big changes and stress anf guess i lost my focus. I'm not dwelling on that now and starting again. My brother is also doing it so I've got some rl support. 16 not smoked is correct, great memory! Do you feel amazing now 3 months on? I hope so, you've done great as has everyone else.

Foxbox · 15/10/2018 21:58

Aaww, thanks patsy 😊

I’m amazed that I’m here still quit!
Undoubtedly a direct result of the support I had here.

I no longer cough my lungs up in the morning, teeth and fingers aren’t stained, I can breath better, my skin and hair look better and probably best of all, I don’t wake up in a panic about what hideous self induced illness I might have! I find the ‘health benefits’ bit of the smoke free app very encouraging. It’s well worth it for those reasons. Smile

Good to hear you’ve got a rl vape buddy- you know you can do it- you’ve got your resolve back now...

You’ve made a great start today- look forward to hearing your updates Smile

So great to hear you are feeling all the health benefits and having less health anxiety. Something to spur me on again!

I had 3 cigs yesterday and so far today ive I've had just the 1. Haven't got anymore in and I will not be buying any. If i can do 3 weeks then I should mange full time. Need a clear, positive mind set to keep it up during tough times. Lets hope I've got that!

Foxbox · 17/10/2018 18:37

Great going patsy!

So many fags not smoked already!

How’s the rest of the day been?

I think you’ll be feeling the benefits very soon.

I know what you mean about tough times, but once you’ve cracked it you won’t even want a fag. I never thought that’d be the case for me but it is Shock

patsywine · 17/10/2018 21:19

Just had the 1 this morning fox then thought I would have another around 4pm, only had a bit and threw it. In bed now so that's one and a half for today 🤣 My aim tomorrow is not to reach for a cig as soon as i wake and instead, use my vape.

Foxbox · 17/10/2018 22:15

Brilliant!

There’s that clear positive mindset! Grin

How you doing @patsywine?

OP posts:
bigfishlittlefishtupperwarebox · 20/10/2018 13:25

Hope you're still doing ok @patsywine! I'm nearly 4 months in now, I can't believe it. Going through DD being in hospital for a night near the start and a recent load of marriage stress I'm hoping that's me done with tobacco!

Foxbox · 20/10/2018 18:10

Amazing bigfish!

Yes, I reckon if you can go through all that stress and still get through this far then you’re done with it Smile

For me, I’ve just got to make sure I have vapes, spare vapes, liquid....be equipped for any possible vaping mishap and touch wood I’m ok! Don’t think I’d be so good if I was suddenly without!

OP posts:
bigfishlittlefishtupperwarebox · 20/10/2018 19:51

Ooh no, I can't imagine being stuck without!! I've always got spare liquid and a coil in my bag just in case!!

TheFormidableMrsC · 20/10/2018 19:59

Hello! I saw this in active and thought I'd post. I smoked for 30 years. Husband left, I had to give up my excellent well paid London job to look after our autistic toddler. Realised very quickly that on my limited carer income I couldn't afford to smoke. Just as well really. I have vaped for nearly two years now. I started with a cheap Vape88 thing and then realised that it was actually OK, so I splashed out on a much better vape and haven't looked back. Admittedly I have the very very odd fag, usually at Christmas, but only because everybody else is smoking and I don't enjoy it at all. I can't believe how life changing vaping has been. Cheap, I can run again properly for exercise purposes, cough gone, no nasty fag mouth...I can't see me giving up vaping though, I enjoy it too much! My teeth also look amazingly white, I hadn't realised how badly smoking affected them. Anyway, that's my experience and I HTH Flowers

TheFormidableMrsC · 20/10/2018 20:01

Just to add...the only downside is planning..I stockpile liquids, I have chargers for car and house...I have a spare vape...it's just a faff in that respect rather than asking for 20 Silk Cut over the counter....but am used to it now and it's well worth it!

Ollivander84 · 20/10/2018 20:16

For some motivation - I have now NOT smoked... 26144 cigarettes!

patsywine · 20/10/2018 20:29

Great going Bigfish You've done amazingly well, especially given the circumstances!

I'm doing ok Fox. Can't seem to shake that 1st morning fag but then I'm fine just vaping the entire day. So I'm down to 1 a day so far. Hoping tomorrow is the morning I'll vape right off the bat.

patsywine · 20/10/2018 20:34

Thanks MrsC. I am too in the same boat 're not being able to afford to smoke. Even more so than my last attempt. I done 3 weeks with just vaping. This time round I'm waking up and automatically going straight to the garden for my usual morning cig and the vaping the rest of the day away fine, no cravings at all. I just need to cut that one out. I need to be brave and bite the bullet!

TheFormidableMrsC · 20/10/2018 21:20

@patsywine I changed my habit. I get up and have a tea. I don't touch my vape until after I've done the school run. So that is my first coffee and vape of the day. I've always drunk tea on getting up and have never been able to associate that with vaping or indeed smoking which is a good thing I think! So now I know when I get back from school I can indulge a little and I really look forward to it and it's changed my habitual behaviour. I had to change that otherwise I would have carried on smoking.

Foxbox · 20/10/2018 21:52

You’re doing great patsy!

That’s really good to hear Grin

I did the ‘vaping first, tell myself I can have a fag after if I still want one’ approach to crack the morning one(s!) previously I would get up earlier to smoke about 5 fags with my morning 2cups of tea Blush

Anyway, keep focusing on all those fags not smoked and tell yourself how well you’re doing. Because you are.

bigfishI carry around soo much vaping paraphernalia so as not to get caught short- I have a special little bag for it all! Grin

Olivander that’s amazing!! It’s good to see you again! Thank you for keeping popping up to give support- it really does make a difference.

Hello MrsC 👋
Some fab advice there and an inspiring story. If it weren’t for others like you there’s no way I’d still be here, not smoking after 4months.
I agree the faff is well worth it. It’s just part of my routine now and I think it’s helped in a funny sort of way- so there’s not a big void where smoking was.

Keep it up patsy- we're rooting for you!

Woke up tired and groggy this morning and felt like i need a fag and went straight to them again. 🙈 I know they are always gonna be here you see as my DP smokes so its easy to reach for one. I know I can go all day without though so I don't know why I'm only craving that one cig. I think I'm going to change things up again. Tomorrow, instead of getting up instantly and coming down, I'm going to lay in bed for 5 minutes and vape. Thank you all for the support and helpful tips.

Foxbox · 21/10/2018 11:08

Sounds like a good plan patsy.

I did/do that. I think it’s about making sure you’re topped up enough on nicotine so it makes sense that it’s harder in the mornings.

It’s a bit different satisfying the nicotine cravings with vaping than with fags isn’t it. Which is why it’s a good idea to try and get topped up before you get out of bed and have all the usual craving triggers.

That said, don’t beat yourself up. You’re doing great and have NOT smoked loads already. I couldn’t do 0 straight away- it took me well over a week to get to that. Reading everyone else’s experiences here also made me realise how different it is for everyone. Some people take a lot longer and still get there.

Focus on what you’re gaining. Count what you haven’t smoked and be nice to yourself- it’s a big deal and you’re doing it.

You’re doing great 👍

It’s good to see this thread again. When I started vaping I found the vaping threads in the stop smoking section really motivating. It was so good to see people starting off vaping and still vaping years later. I didn’t believe it could happen for me but it did!!!

Some more motivation - according to my app I’ve saved £5250 Shock. My second anniversary isn’t till January. It’s a staggering amount although I have obviously found other things to spend my cash on as I don’t really feel better off.

Patsy I have a friend IRL who started vaping 4 weeks ago. She hasn’t made the switch to full time vaping yet although she’s down to two a day from 40. I’ve told her not to force herself to give those two up yet and I’ll say the same to you. It will happen naturally in time. At some point you’ll have a cig and think “that was absolutely disgusting”.

I’m amused to see the reference to spares. I carry a spare set up but I’ve also got a little bag with a mini rebuilding kit obviously in case I feel the urge to rebuild a tank while I’m out. It’s ridiculous. I’m going to unpack it right now and never take it out again Grin

patsywine · 22/10/2018 14:52

Well today i didn't have my usual morming fag! Had my vape instead. 😊

Fox I done what I said and vaped in bed before waking. Never had a single craving for a fag 🤗

Hello again Jins You're right in that you'll soon think it tastes disgusting, i already did. That's why it was annoying me that i couldn't drop it as i wasn't enjoying it at all.

I really hope I've cracked it this time. I feel different this time. The 1st time round, cigs were consuming my thoughts even though i was enjoying my vaping. Apart from my morning one, I'm not even thinking about them at all! 😊

Foxbox · 22/10/2018 19:32

Wooo patsy!! 🎉🎊

That’s fab news! Well done.
Vaping in bed it is then Grin 👍

I definitely think you’ll have cracked it, if you’re not even thinking about it that’s amazing. I think going through it last time has set you in good stead.

Keep going, you’re doing great. Let us know how you’re getting on

Hi Jins 👋

Good to see you. I agree these threads are brilliant support. I’ve said it numerous times but I know I wouldn’t have made the switch without this. I’m eternally grateful for the support I’ve had.

Grin at the spares and more spares!!
I don’t think you should get rid of your ‘emergency rebuild kit’ it’s making me smile!

As we’ve said before, us addicts can be obsessive by nature and these little quirks are at least not going to kill us!

My obsessive spares bag contains 3 vapes, coils for each, a spare tank, portable charger, various charging wires, liquids of all kinds...still feel like I might have forgotten something!!

OP posts:
Jins · 22/10/2018 21:40

That is a fairly comprehensive obsessive spares bag Grin

I don’t feel so bad now. My rebuilding kit is 3m kanthal wire, coiling jig, couple of mini screwdrivers, an Allen key, tweezers, nail clippers and cotton wool. I have NEVER used anything from it.

I went out this afternoon with just the one vape. No liquid. Nothing. It was liberating.

You are so right about us addicts being obsessive. I have definitely become obsessed with the rituals involved in my style of vaping. On the plus side I’ve learned a bit about volts, watts and ohms and I’m pretty capable with a mini screwdriver Grin
