children's clothes with skulls on...WHY?

sausagepastie · 18/03/2010 19:05

I can't understand it - it's horrible, isn't it? Or is it just me being old fashioned?

The last thing I want is an image of a skull on my son's clothes.

ikwym my little nephew has one with a snake coming out of the eye socket.

sausagepastie · 18/03/2010 19:08

ugh! What's it about? I can understand a resurgence of punk etc for teenagers but why for little kids...it's so yuk.

cruelladepoppins · 18/03/2010 19:18

I agree, it's morbid and yuk - they seem to be everywhere!

But I have made an exception for "pirate" logos and for a top my eldest wanted a couplof years ago - "Danger - next mood swing in 3 minutes" complete with fizzy chemicals. Really suited him as well.

Earthstar · 18/03/2010 19:21

it is yuk but i thought it died a death in 2008

sausagepastie · 18/03/2010 19:27

Not according to debenhams. I was just after a coat.

Becaue for some reason our society has made pirates into 'cool' things for kids, and brushed over the fact that they are just murderous raping pilaging theives on boats...

And it started long before pirates of the carribean.

I think, ultimately, children's clothes manufacturers are just plain lazy, they cannot be bothered to think of nice motifs and logos for their clothes, so they just chuck in some skulls and crossbones, or camouflage, or cars and trucks, .

overmydeadbody · 18/03/2010 19:32

Debenhams don't do much nice stuff for boys though do they?

ButterPie · 18/03/2010 19:34

I like them on my DDs. Makes a nice change.

EggyAllenPoe · 18/03/2010 19:46

i thought you were going to link to some very kitsch kids clothing made from a 50s-retro print.

though i think its o on any clothing, and didn't buy such a 50's item (even though i liked other aspects, it was a 'frida kahlo' tribute print)because it had skuls on...not just on kids stuff.

sausagepastie · 19/03/2010 07:18

Debenhams isn't great but they had a sale so thought I'd have a look...mistake!

SuSylvester · 19/03/2010 07:22

ooh my sons LOVE them
you wait
It will all happen

cyb · 19/03/2010 07:26

My ds's love skull stuff too.

So do I

sausagepastie · 19/03/2010 07:31

What's it about though? Is it all not a bit, depressing? It's a symbol of death isn't it.

OP posts:
SuSylvester · 19/03/2010 07:49

you are overthinking
for htem is a symbol of cool

hazeyjane · 19/03/2010 08:07

Like ButterPie says, it makes a nice change when dds wear them.

In Mexico skulls are seen as a celebration of life rather than death - "Death is part of life and, as such, it's representative of the Mexican spirit and tradition which says: "Don't take anything lying down - even death!" "

They are just quite a cool image, and lots of children (boys and girls) like stuff that is a bit scary - dinosaurs, roaring lions, skull and crossbones etc.

SoupDragon · 19/03/2010 08:11

[shrug]

bruffin · 19/03/2010 08:18

Debenhams is one of the best shops for boys clothes especially older ones when it is virtually impossible to get decent boys clothes.

Just been onto their website and there is not one top with a skull on so I am not sure where you are shopping. Not that I see a problem with skulls in the first place.

CrankyTwanky · 19/03/2010 09:31

Hmmm.

Quite about it tbh.
8yo DD seems to think it's cool.
2yo DS loves a pirate. (Thanks to pop-up-pirate.)
I was a goth in my youth, and still have a collection of skulls knocking about, so I can't say anything really.
My DD, certainly is very aware of and nonplussed by death.

TheProvincialLady · 19/03/2010 09:40

I saw a top last which which was age 3-4 and had the word DEATH written in large letters across the front.

Which was nice

sausagepastie · 19/03/2010 10:46

TPL

Bruffin do you want me to link? It's a coat, under special offers section, boys' clothes, bla bla bla. I really can't be bothered. Of course I may have been on another site entirely and just not noticed...

OP posts:
sausagepastie · 19/03/2010 10:47

you made me doubt myself.

OP posts:
Pumphreydidit · 19/03/2010 10:52

''Bones' Boden

sungirltan · 19/03/2010 10:55

i quite like them. doesn't offend me in the way that disney princess/barbie crap does

sausagepastie · 19/03/2010 10:59

See I don't mind the Boden ones so much - theyare more 'cute pirate flag' and less 'death is cool' type ambience iygwim

i don't object to pirate stuff at all, but those debs coats are pure ugly.

I think we've been conditioned into liking them in the same way we were conditioned into thinking stonewashed jeans were groovy back in 1982. It's an insult.

BattyKoda · 19/03/2010 11:03

DS1 (4yo) has a tshirt with a skull and cross bones, he loves it because it matches the flag on his pirate ship.

Maybe that's why - because boys like it. My DS would love that coat, I don't though.
