children's clothes with skulls on...WHY?

sausagepastie · 18/03/2010 19:05

I can't understand it - it's horrible, isn't it? Or is it just me being old fashioned?

The last thing I want is an image of a skull on my son's clothes.

Sorry I just looked at the tshirts, I got the impression you were complaining everything was covered in skulls.

I actually quite like those coats, wouldn't have minded them for DS when he was little. No where as ugly as those KSBK and Tommy Tiger stripey clothes.

bruffin · 19/03/2010 14:35

sorry that should be Toby Tiger.

SoupDragon · 19/03/2010 14:37

I suspect they sell boys' clothes with skulls etc on for the same reason they sell girls' clothes in a foul shade of pink covered in fairy vomit and unicorn poo: because people buy them.

If you don't like them, don't buy them (just like I don't buy pink fairy vomit! )

ZZZenAgain · 19/03/2010 14:38

have nver understood this either. Can't stand those black clothes with skulls on them.

KristinaM · 19/03/2010 14:41

i agree they are horrid

we have already had one dead son so i have no desire to dress my others in clothing with death images on them

even if someone somewhere has decreed that that are cool

bran · 19/03/2010 14:49

I quite like that skull coat, especially in grey. I agree with SoupDragon, if you don't like it don't buy it. It's easy to avoid skulls, less easy to avoid pink for girls unfortunately.

sausagepastie · 19/03/2010 14:51

Kristina so sorry

Bran, yes, it had occurred to me not to buy them.

do fairies really vomit pink? what on earth do they eat?

bran · 19/03/2010 14:58

Fairies eat pink marshmallows, I thought everybody knew that. And unicorns have glittery poo, where did you think glitter came from, a glitter factory? (Anticipating your next question there.)

SPBInDisguise · 19/03/2010 15:40

I don't care how pretty it is, no doubt if we go for a walk DS will stand in it and track glittery poo throught the house

SoupDragon · 19/03/2010 15:43

Yes, fairies vomit pink and sequins.

And you never get the last vestiges of unicorn poo out of your carpet.

Mumarch · 19/03/2010 16:14

I made a strategic decision that I did not want symbols of death (ie skulls) on my little boy's clothes. It is such a very cheap win, and must be heavily discouraged. There is something horrible about it too. Skulls? Makes me think of the Killing Fields of Cambodia, images of which were used on a trendy wallpaper recently.

Flame · 19/03/2010 16:19

Meh.

I am happy with skulls.

Glittery pink skulls should be sold more. Piss everyone off.

MayorNaze · 19/03/2010 16:21

i like skull clothes. so do all of my dcs they rock

MayorNaze · 19/03/2010 16:21

skulls rock on them, that is. on me, i look like i am trying to be 15 and failing miserably

MayorNaze · 19/03/2010 16:24

worst protagonist of skulls in my house is dd2 - she is not quite 4

think people are reading too much into a skull image on childrens clothes, i am not belittling anybody's feelings or opinions, but comparing a skull tshirt to the killing fields is a bit . it's not like its a swastika

teaandcakeplease · 19/03/2010 16:24

My LO's are very young so I'd feel very uncomfortable and yucky about it on them.

I think once they're much much older, I suspect they'll want clothes like that though...

I guess it depends on how old your kids are, on little children's clothing, it's a bit weird to me...

BettyButterknife · 19/03/2010 16:24

Resurgence recently because of the trademark Alexander McQueen scarves, maybe?

LauraMS · 19/03/2010 16:29

me & my fiance are very "different" than what most people on here are were heavily tattood & pierced & think theres nothing wrong with skulls on kids clothes. my son has clothes with skulls on but then he also has very "cute" little boy clothes in my opinion if you dont like them dont buy them. simple

CiderIUpAndSetIFree · 19/03/2010 16:42

I don't like them. I can understand older boys and girls liking that sort of thing (I was quite a morbid child ) but why they put it on stuff for under 5's is beyond me.

Looking for shoes for DD (3) I found a nice pair of otherwise tasteful looking light brown/grey Osh Kosh trainers which I was oohing over until I noticed the skull motifs.
here if you're interested

Very annoying as they'd have gone with loads of her clothes if they'd been plain, but DD refused to even countenance them as they were obviously 'boys' ones, not helped by the skull. (She leapt delightedly on a pink flowery pair from which she has refused to be parted since, grrr.)

OtterInaSkoda · 19/03/2010 16:50

I have no problem with skulls. I associate them more with Mexico and punk. Mexican punk even

MayorNaze I feel your pain

Although i do have a very close friend who is partial to a bit of skullery and she looks fabulous.

NormalityBites · 19/03/2010 17:02

My DD (3) likes 'skellingtons' I used to have this great dress for her, it was baby pink on white pattern - it looked like a flowery pattern until you got up close and realised it was lots of tiny skull and crossbones close together. The elderly grandmas never noticed, they loved her pink pink PINK dress and I got to feel all subversive

kif · 19/03/2010 17:03

My DS loves pirates.

Tbh, isn't this an offshoot of the 'boys and guns' argument?

I tell him off if he shouts at the breakfast table or shoves his brother. So he goes off and puts on a pirate costume, says 'Arghh' menacingly lots of times, then walks his toy pirate off the plank into shark infested waters, then comes to eat his dinner saying 'please' and 'thank you'.

IMO, it's a reasonable outlet for him - skull T-shirts and all. Then you can naturally segue him into an interest in geography 'let's look at maps to find out where you sail', discipline (i.e. talk about thieves honour - how pirates were very brutal about keeping discipline on board), economics ('Well, money used to be gold. And people used to have to put the gold on ships').

Scaredycat3000 · 19/03/2010 17:05

Because I was a metalhead.
Because I hate pale colours, they make us look ill due to our colouring.
Because I don't want my boy labelled 'little monster' or 'here comes trouble'.
Because when I showed my MIL the skull and crossbones jumper I had made my DS her reply was 'good god!' .
Because I don't want dogs on my boys clothes. Some thugs set their dog on my cat when DS was 36 hours old (she survived, just).
Because people stop me and compliment me on my sons clothes .

OtterInaSkoda · 19/03/2010 17:06

Flame I would like to see more mini skirts for toddlers featuring glittery pink skulls. Or glittery pink skull bedecked shoes. With heels
