sausagepastie · 18/03/2010 19:05

I can't understand it - it's horrible, isn't it? Or is it just me being old fashioned?

The last thing I want is an image of a skull on my son's clothes.

OP posts:
pointydog · 20/03/2010 19:59

it's naff and overdone but I don't find it objectionable

Cyclops · 20/03/2010 20:26

I guess because hearts are associated with love?

Spacehoppa · 20/03/2010 20:28

We have some pirate welies which I think have the odd skull and crossbones on them. Death is generally I think uncool. I mean, how many dead people do you meet at parties? (Goths excepted)

sparkle12mar08 · 20/03/2010 20:37

To me skulls on clothing are cheap, nasty, common, and showing a lack of thought. That do you?!

bananastainsonallmytops · 20/03/2010 20:46

I don't think skulls on clothes are such a bad thing. I think they can look nice. I've seen far worse like six year old girls wearing high heels they aren't able to walk in...i don't understand that? let kids be kids.

Cyclops · 20/03/2010 21:01

yes let kids be kids but they are not designing the clothes are they?

mitochondria · 20/03/2010 21:47

Dinosaurs are all extinct. Therefore dead.

Lots of people have skulls and are still alive.

Therefore dinosaurs are more morbid, surely?

Cyclops · 20/03/2010 21:48

Dinosaurs are not people!

mitochondria · 20/03/2010 22:07

What about dinosaur skulls then? Are they OK?

kittyfu · 20/03/2010 22:08

love them, love them, love them, so does the ds. but i was a goth in my youth .

But you chose "rasputin" as your nickname, rasputin.

Must say, I dont like skulls. Was looking at undies for dd today, one set had skulls all over the bra and pants!! dd blenched and said no.

rockinhippy · 20/03/2010 22:50

I'm surprised so many are so offended by this, its a fashion fad, & one I quite like, makes a pleasant change from a lot of the overly twee barbie/dysney stuff does, or worse really dated frilly florals

DD has a few bits I made her last year, & she still loves them, she's fashion mad, has been since she could talk, so why try & stifle that,

Cyclops · 20/03/2010 22:55

dinosaur skulls don't remind me of massacres committed by humans on humans!

mitochondria · 20/03/2010 22:56

Crikey Cyclops, do you think you might be overthinking it a bit?

When I see a jolly roger on a t-shirt, massacres aren't the first thing that springs to mind.

nighbynight · 20/03/2010 22:57

rockinhippy - it is because the skull is associated with images of mortality, from "Alas, poor Yorick, I knew him well" to the photos of Pol Pot massacres.

then this same image is printed in pink on a bra, or a t shirt, and you just think it makes a "pleasant change" from flowers?

rockinhippy · 20/03/2010 23:13

& mortality is a fact of life, so where the real harm in that??

like anything else its scary & unpalatable, because people make it so, where as in reality its a striking & very versatile image that lends its self well to design, & is a matter of personal taste whether or not people buy it.......& as it sells well, I suspect you are in the minority??

look at the day of the dead ceremonies in Mexico et al, fantastic family friendly festivals, often with skeletons filled with sweets & cakes for kids.........not such a stuffy attitude, & I bet those kids don't have nightmares over skulls, as no adult around them are stuffy enough to stress over it, & give there kids a complex ..........

though that said, I do agree printed on a pink bras & pants is a bit naff

as for the rest of it, I will take it as tongue in cheek....for if its not, then perhaps you need to lighten up, that sort of over thinking is WAY more scary than a stylish bit of skelly bones...lol

nighbynight · 20/03/2010 23:25

Of course mortality is a fact of life, nobody is disputing that, and I dont think anyone has agonised about their children being scared of skulls.

Simply that they are strongly associated with death in our culture, and therefore odd to put them on toddlers clothes, esp when pink and sparkly. even the Victorians didnt do that!
It jars a bit, that something so serious, is just the latest "cool" trend for the would-be-rebellious.

Not relevatn to talk about how skulls are seen in mexico, we are not talking about skulls on mexican childrens clothes, and they are seen differently here, that is not wrong, it is just different.

LaRagazzaInglese · 20/03/2010 23:27

For kids its a symbol of jolly pirate fun, or halloween scary story type fun, but (OP) i think the Debenhams jackets are awful and when you see it on a newborn's playsuit, that's a bit weird.

rockinhippy · 20/03/2010 23:47

Yes, but my point was, that its been stuffy about it that keeps it "different"........& bringing up Pol Pot massacacre is equally irrrelevant...........lets face it theres far worse things out there to worry about than a somewhat diluted down skull & bones image

at the end of the day, its no real big deal, just a matter of personal taste, ....you would catch me putting DD in lacey frilly twee dresses & mop cap etc..........not that she would of let me if I'd of wanted too ...lol

its fashionable, & it sells well, some are done badly, & others with style & taste, same as any fashion really, some like it, some don't.....it doesn't need to be a big deal.......you might as well have a problem with pictures of fast cars on Tees........ OMG, encouraging a none environmentally friendly thought ..........IMO just as daft

Cyclops · 20/03/2010 23:50

I guess I just find the whole idea about skulls on clothing rather odd, something only people in the cosseted West seem to do. Do Mexican babies were clothes with skulls on? Or young kids? Am curious...

Ancestor worship isn't uncommon in the world but that is all about respect for the dead. I struggle to make the connection between wearing skulls and respecting the dead.

Cyclops · 20/03/2010 23:55

where

nighbynight · 21/03/2010 07:22

rockinhippy, just what do you take seriously?

Images of huge piles of skulls from the Pol Pot regime, are one of the most memorable and terrible things in the twentieth century. Or was it just another cool trend for you?

Why should we change our way of looking at death, and associating the skull with death? I am strongly against the current trend to somehow homogenise all cultures, and impose a phoney sort of "equality." (ie everyone should agree with the current way of thinking)
In northern europe, the skull isn't seen in the same way as it is in mexico. Thats not to say that either is wrong, or better than the other, just different. And the argument that we should change to be like them, is just irritating. It is FAR more important that we RESPECT them, than that we change to be like them.

Cyclops · 21/03/2010 07:33

lol it was late when I last posted so for the last time

wear

nighbynight · 21/03/2010 07:35

And by the way, teh point about death is not that we should ignore it because its not a terribly nice subject.
A few reasons are: that the whole trying to be hard "look at me, Im not scared to wear a skull and shock old ladies, oooh oooh Im so hard" attitude is so naff.
Also sick-making that our priviledged youngsters, who by and large don't have to worry about dying before they grow up, are treating death as a cool trend. They really havent got a clue in most cases.
From a design point of view, the skull is crap, too. The face draws the attention, but there are no lines/light and shade strong enough to balance that and produce a good design. all the designs that I have seen, without exception, are mediocre, and rely on the shock value of using skulls.
