Does everyone do it these days?
Being an unreconstructed 80s feminist, I am a bit bemused by the fact that it seems to be taken for granted that everyone routinely waxes their fanjo.
Removing, between May and October, any hair that was visible between knicker elastic and knees, counted as perfectly acceptable pubic grooming until the mid-Nineties at least.
But now, apparently you need to look like a prepubescent child to be appropriately groomed.
Is this another of the long line of 21st-century battles feminism has lost?
Or am I the one that's losing it?

BonsoirAnna try just washing its much cleaner .

I just tidy a bit at the sides and along the top, I have very dark hair and if I do anything other than a little bit of a downwards shave (in the direction of the hair growth) I get terrible ingrowing hairs. I would rather be a bit fuzzy as nature intended than have big red pulsating ingrowing hairs or look like a small child.

BonsoirAnna · 07/04/2009 14:37

LOL it is because you don't take enough baths that you get ingrowing hairs

JulesJules · 07/04/2009 14:37

Yes, I'm bemused by this too. I don't do it, and have never done except immediately prior to a CS. I was horrified by that thread a while ago on which several nurses claimed that HCPs would talk about you and laugh behind your back if you hadn't had a Brazilian. Quite put me off booking a smear test...

bamboobutton · 07/04/2009 14:39

it most definitly is cleaner when its shaved down there.

i haven't been able to tidy up properly since moving into a house with only a shower and seeing as i don't fancy balancing on the bog with one foot up on the cabinet and trying to swish the razor in the sink on the other side, ive gone natural, and i hate it.

i dont use tampons much anymore because of prolapse so periods are messy and if you are out all day without wetwipes it dries in the hair and goes crusty, yuk. even with wet wipes you have to give it several good scrubs if its hairy, hair free its simply one wipe clean.

i can't wait until we move to our new place that has a bath.

muggglewump · 07/04/2009 16:09

Skramble, I don't get this "look like a small child."
How exactly?
Because removing my fanjo hair does not shrink my fanjo lips, it does not make it lack the vaginal discretions normal for a grown woman, and it does not make me look like a child, never mind a small one, I still, funnily enough, look like a 25 year old woman (even though I'm 31)

EasterEggsintheSky · 07/04/2009 16:10

I read bamboobutton as baboonbottom. Must be the subject matter

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 07/04/2009 16:17

How is it 'cleaner' as long as you wash regularly?
If having hair was intrinsically dirty we would all shave our heads.
As for the 'sex is better' argument - I am not sure how this works. How does depilating improve your sex life? Is there something I'm missing here? Other than the odd hair getting caught in DH's teeth I'm not sure how it interferes in any way. And as far as that goes, in the interests of fairness wouldn't men then depilate in order to get the full benefit of a blow job?
Or is there some particular form of really great sex I am missing out on becauses of never having had a brazilian?
Enlighten me.

KayHarker · 07/04/2009 16:27

I've done it a few times - once, memorably, for a woman who wanted me to pierce my labia and have me as her sex slave.

I declined

But I did it again a few months ago because I was curious, and I just found it the most irritaing, high-maintenance faff ever. Plus I just looked odd.

So I'm quite happy with the regular wash method of being clean, and will forgo the plucked-chicken sexiness, I think.

procrastinatingparent · 07/04/2009 16:32

About to go out now for a smear. Are you telling me that the nurse will snigger at me for not having a Brazilian? Like I wasn't worrying enough about it anyway...

KayHarker · 07/04/2009 16:34

I had my smear last week, and apart from the bit where she had to part the hair like it was an over-hanging willow tree, it was fine

HecAteTheEasterBunny · 07/04/2009 16:35

I don't do it. don't see the point. I don't wear anything that the hair would poke out of.

hf128219 · 07/04/2009 16:36

I think it should be 'groomed' - not left to its own devices.

bleh · 07/04/2009 16:39

But in the Middle east they've been removing pubic hair for centuries (unless I am very wrong). Am I?

MrsBoo · 07/04/2009 16:44

How regulary do you need to carry out maintenance. I'm not a very high maintenance kind of girl, and so normally forget about these kind of things until everything is ovegrown!

skramble · 07/04/2009 16:44

You don't get ingrowing hairs from not bathing FGS.

I mean looking like a child because grown up woman are actually meant to have pubic hair, so to me I think a totally shaven looks strange, but.. I suppose going by that you would think I like bearded men but no they look like extras from a joy of sex book. . Ok like most UK woman I don't want to look too natural.

And unlike some posters I am not dictating what I think all woman should do with their fanjos, I am saying why I do what I do.

Each to their own and all that, its about what your prefer, so careful with sweeping statements that it is cleaner, perhaps you feel cleaner, (I totally understand that if you have to use pads instead of tampons too.)

KayHarker · 07/04/2009 16:50

Well, I felt stubbly within a few hours, tbh. But I veeted, there's not a tiny chance of me waxing down there.

And veet stinks to high heaven, so it's either slightly chemical smelling sex within a few hours, or stubble rash round his nethers if it's a bit later than that.

doggiesayswoof · 07/04/2009 16:53

Kay I am exactly the same as you - stubble within half a day, and I could not be waxing (can't afford it, and couldn't be bothered with the faff even if I could)

I do like a diy trim though.

skramble · 07/04/2009 16:54

I would have a 5oclock shadow so not a good look really.

howtotellmum · 07/04/2009 17:11

bamboobutton- the answer is to take a 500 mls bottle of water with you and pour it over yourself between your legs in the loo- you'll come up feeling fresh every time amd without the nasty perfumes/chemicals in wipes.

Surely it all gets prickly- unless you do it daily?

I can't see the point. Anyway, body hair is supposed to trap pheromones, which make you more subtly sexy- we can't smell them consciously but they are there are they drive blokes wild.[grin[ so the researchers say.

All the men i have known like to stroke a bit of soft downy hair.

procrastinatingparent · 07/04/2009 17:13

at willow tree. And 5 o'clock shadow.

I did my bikini line and decided that she would have to put up with the rest.

Of course, the nurse turned out to be a parent from school. I think I must be living in the only place in the South East where no one ever moves away and they all get jobs locally so they can have the pleasure of walking down the high street and calling to mind the nether regions of everyone they pass.

BitOfFunnyBunny · 07/04/2009 17:38

Saying that ingrowing hairs are caused by not washing a utterly ridiculous. I shouldn't be posting on anything contentious today as I am feeling tired and cranky

traceybath · 07/04/2009 17:43

I've had brazilians and the whole lot off.

Overall prefer the feel of everything off but prefer the look of brazilian so small bit left at front.

Afterall - that area does age also and a little coverage is good

Do agree with anna though that sex better with more taken off.

Do wax and exfoliate as that seems to stop the ingrowing hairs.

However am pregnant at the moment so god knows whats happening under my bump

Spidermama · 07/04/2009 17:44

I've got the full, natural look and always will have. I hate the seedy, porn influenced pre-pubescent, weirdy shaved look. Revolting. Unwomanly. Unatural, stubbly fannies. Keep 'em. I'm a real woman.

Can you guess I feel quite strongly about it? To me it's like whale bone corsets, silicone breasts, whiter than white teeth and feet binding. Just another ludicrous way women vandalise their bodies to try to attain a fantasy vision (usually the male fantasy or at least the women's perception of the male fantasy) of how they should look.

Unfeminist -- ABSOLUTELY!

HeadFairy · 07/04/2009 17:49

What spidermamma said, I hate it too. Looks horrible. My friend has it done and it looks like a sentence without a full stop.... odd

ThePellyandMe · 07/04/2009 17:57

I am far too lazy to do much with my fanjo hair.
I have a trim and tidy up when we go swimming, that's about it.
I have smears and internals at least once a year and haven't up until this point been embarrassed about the state of my fanjo hair.
Considering the state of my bits and how far south everything down there is headed, the hairiness is probably way down the list of things for the Doctor to laugh about
