Does everyone do it these days?
Being an unreconstructed 80s feminist, I am a bit bemused by the fact that it seems to be taken for granted that everyone routinely waxes their fanjo.
Removing, between May and October, any hair that was visible between knicker elastic and knees, counted as perfectly acceptable pubic grooming until the mid-Nineties at least.
But now, apparently you need to look like a prepubescent child to be appropriately groomed.
Is this another of the long line of 21st-century battles feminism has lost?
Or am I the one that's losing it?

I do basic maintenance only. Do need to do something as it is visible when I am going swimming which is obviously not good.

Probably it would be best if Anna and I didn't meet each other - we wash everything at 40 degrees which I seem to remember she felt made people smell

madlentileater · 07/04/2009 19:12

yes, I think the 'not on public view' bit is relevant...though I don't shave legs or armpits (real DM girl at heart) I can see how this is a dominant aesthetic, to the point where not conforming can be preceived as almost aggressively ungroomed....butvery few people actually see whether you have pubic haird, and surely those that are lucky enough to should be happy with your natural state?

madlentileater · 07/04/2009 19:13

shocking typing, sorry!

IcantbelieveImForty · 07/04/2009 19:13

..but i have fantastic orgasms with a very bushy bush, I always have. Perhaps I should go bald & effectively do my own 'market research ?!

hf128219 · 07/04/2009 19:14

Some men like it bare, some men like it neat and tidy and some men like it wild and wirey!

I think more men trim nowadays as they're under the impression it makes things look bigger in comparison.

Armpits are left for a few days here - or until the deodorant forms lumps on the hair! Then I'll run a razor over them. In summer when I'm wearing a short sleeved top they will see a razor more often, but living in Scotland and feeling constantly freezing whatever the weather means I can be a happy hairy mary if I want to be!

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 07/04/2009 19:20

Well luckily DH's is enormous so he doesn't need to bother.

Is that why women trim - to make their fanjos look bigger???!

KayHarker · 07/04/2009 19:22

I've seen this thread title too much now, 'Minge Topiary' is starting to sound like a Terry Pratchett character.

traceybath · 07/04/2009 19:22

It does make your hips look bigger though

Oh and also from a sex point of view - no irritating hairs in the teeth scenario either.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 07/04/2009 19:24

True, Tracey, but I'm not that flexible anyway .

lol

KayHarker · 07/04/2009 19:25

Makes me look like I've got something freshly prepared for Mrs Tweedy's pies between my legs.

muggglewump · 07/04/2009 19:26

I don't really see 10 minutes every 6 weeks as high maintenance, to have a fanjo that I like the look and feel of more, but there you go.

I keep the hairy pits and legs, and the tache that seems to be growing recently as signs of my femininity and to make sure I'm not mistaken as a prepubescent girl, in case my clothes accidently fall off in public or something

paolosgirl · 07/04/2009 19:26

Why on EARTH would you want your hips to look bigger?!

paolosgirl · 07/04/2009 19:28

Muggle - if yours only needs 10 minutes every 6 weeks then you are one lucky lady.

Claire236 · 07/04/2009 19:28

I don't have any pubic hair & I much prefer it that way. I'm still a woman regardless of how much hair I might have. I find it improves sex too as the skin is really sensitive & I get all tingly when dh strokes where the hair used to be. I also prefer the look of it. I do think if anyone does it to impress men it's a sad state of affairs but personally I tried it out of curiosity & liked it. dh also trims as hair in my teeth puts me right off & like most men he'd do anything for a bj.

LaDiDaDi · 07/04/2009 19:30

I started with abit of trimming years ago and then gradually shave more and more off until I was completely hair free and I have been for years now, dp isn't sure if he's ever seen me with pubic hair and does sometiemes suggest that I grow it but I like the feeling of shaving it off and it does make me feel fresh and clean.

I do wonder though about the message that I'm giving to dd (2.11) as I don't want her to grow up thinking that she should shave her pubic hair just that if she wants to then she can.

I don't see anything wrong with tidying up, however you choose, be it Immac, waxing, shaving, whatever.

But I agree the 'whip it all off' look has come from porn and is another way of subtley pressurising women into having yet another 'beauty' procedure that is not only unnecessary but ensures they have to keep coming back and back for upkeep.

In that vein, more and more people I know are having laser treatment for veins, botox for frown lines, when is it all going to end! Whatever happened to natural beauty?

Now if you'll excuse me I have to go and dye my eyebrows.
