Am I the only one who hates animal print?

They’re everywhere. Maybe it’s because I’m a child of the 80s but I just can’t rid myself of Bet Lynch’s image. Am I the only one?

Awful stereotyping, classism and internalised misogyny on this thread.

I do see what you mean, although not sure about misogyny.

i don’t like it because it’s fundamentally kind of ersatz. Like gingham, or stripes, or ditzy flowers, are just long established patterns for fabric. But animal print as an aesthetic doesn’t make sense to me: are you supposed to be looking like a leopard ? Same goes for camo prints actually. (Also I think it’s just ugly but that’s just my opinion)

champagneplanet · 22/09/2026 19:20

I love it, but i’m quite picky on the print, and don’t like head to toe, just one item with denim or black can avoid the Bet Lynch look.

ChoppyWalters · 22/09/2026 19:32

I don’t mind a leopard print thin belt with jeans but anything else I do feel barmaidy.

SoBoredOfSelfDoubtHowToGetOut · 22/09/2026 19:35

It looks shit on humans.

MixedFeelingsNoFeelings · 22/09/2026 20:16

Nay, nay and thrice nay, you are not the only one to hate animal print OP! My aversion has grown stronger every year since leopard was rehabilitated as an edgy-but-safe look, somewhere around the mid 90s.

Print is a minefield! To@CreativeGreen's camo I would also add polka dot, monochrome, houndstooth, anything redolent of the 80s.

I don’t think anyone is wearing it to look like an animal, and it’s been worn as clothing for centuries. In ancient Africa and Asia real leopard skin was a symbol of status worn by royalty and warriors.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 22/09/2026 20:20

@ChoppyWalters Do you think Prada or Gucci leopard print is barmaidy? Such an old view. Do you think fashionable Italians think this? It’s so English to have this opinion.

BeardySchnauzer · 22/09/2026 20:22

Oh god ‘so English’ - the ultimate insult

allymccoist · 22/09/2026 20:34

Interested if people think the DRC football team looked tacky at the World Cup?

Am I the only one who hates animal print?
PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 22/09/2026 20:37

I dislike it. But I do have a friend that wears trouser suits in lurid colours and combines them with zebra print waistcoats (and similar items of clothing). Could I pull it off? No. Do I like it? Not really. But she does look fab…

so there are people that manage to pull it off. Somehow!

BeardySchnauzer · 22/09/2026 20:39

They’re nicknamed The Leopards so it’s far more appropriate.

I find animal print leather products (shoes, bags, belts) the worst because it’s mimicking the real thing too closely. I don’t like how snake skin and crocodile skin are used and I don’t like that fur is still acceptable for some

Yes - real leapordskin!

Well for obvious reasons real leopard skin isn’t used anymore, just like other fur.

Right - and given most women in the uk wouldn’t have had the real thing I don’t really get the idea of wanting the fake. Like I say, I personally find it a bit ersatz and therefore naff

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 22/09/2026 22:33

@BeardySchnauzer So do the Italians have Bet Lynch? It’s a fictional character! It’s Corrie. It’s English. As if anyone who is smart in Europe remotely cares or knows about Corrie! It’s utterly parochial.

MrsLFii · 22/09/2026 22:36

I don’t know who Bet Lynch is but I completely agree with you. Invariably awful.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 22/09/2026 23:32

@MrsLFii So why do many very expensive designers use it then? It’s clearly not invariably awful the world over.

Bet Lynch was a bold brassy barmaid from Coronation Street. A tv fictional soap opera. She wore a lot of leopard print and was somewhat over made up and was the quintessential “tart with a heart”. The character and the programme are very English and the Bet Lynch character was in her prime in the 70s and 80s. Yes, she’s fictional and it’s a long time ago yet people say leopard prints are what barmaids wear? Really? One fictional one did and leopard prints defined her but she was a strong character in the show. It’s now a clearly ridiculous comparison, especially when couture houses use these prints.

Gettingbysomehow · 23/09/2026 00:04

The latest hush leopard print range is gorgeous.

BeardySchnauzer · 23/09/2026 06:49

It’s personal taste - I don’t think the Hush range is gorgeous!

Not liking Bet Lynch isn’t the reason people on here don’t like leopard prints

and I’ll wager not every Italian loves leopard print either

Summerlovingtheraspberries · 23/09/2026 07:30

It’s not for me. She people do look good in it though.

I see, thank you. Perhaps I need to caveat every post on here with ‘in my opinion’. The argument that expensive designers use animal print simply won’t work with me I’m afraid, lots of designer clothes are vile, and as I say, in my opinion, animal print clothing is invariably awful. Lots like it, and that’s their prerogative. To each their own and all that!

electrichabanero · 23/09/2026 08:55

I like some animal print clothes/accessories/shoes, and not others.

I don't think the fact that the Italians do something makes it automatically chic or appealing. I don't think a soap character who last appeared on screen 20+ years ago is a great cultural reference point. I don't think wearing leopard or zebra print is akin to wearing real fur so the 'ummm it only looks good on a leopard' posting is a bit silly.

Stormyrose · 23/09/2026 08:56

Why do people keep going on about the Italians. My family is Italian. I work with lots of Italians, the views are the same, it’s divisive. People are acting like Italians are all running around in leapord print, they really are not.
