Am I the only one who hates animal print?

They’re everywhere. Maybe it’s because I’m a child of the 80s but I just can’t rid myself of Bet Lynch’s image. Am I the only one?

I think it's fine to call something tacky (on here, I mean- not unprompted to the wearer's face). It's completely different to sexist and ageist terms like mummy/mumsy or frumpy.

Is calling leopard print tacky not sexist though?

I do not like it either.

bingobangs · 22/09/2026 15:06

And classist?

bingobangs · 22/09/2026 15:04

@StormyroseBut why is animal print seen as tacky?

Why are you asking me,tacky means lacking good taste or style, people think it looks like that.Confused

bingobangs · 22/09/2026 15:06

And classist?

I don’t think either when or wealth determine if a piece of animal print clothing is tacky or not tbh

and I think men in animal print is worse somehow!!

bingobangs · 22/09/2026 15:06

And classist?

Nope it looks equally crap on posh people and working class people.

BeardySchnauzer · 22/09/2026 13:50

We are all allowed our own tastes aren’t we? I can’t say your images of modern leopard print are any more appealing than Bet’s

i took the tone of the thread to be more ‘this seems very popular but I don’t like it - am I alone’ and not a personal attack on those who do like it

Thank you, I don’t start this thread to attack anyone, and I hope I haven’t.

I’m sure all the animal print lovers would shudder in horror at some of the things I wear, which is also fine!

I have never understood it!

Oddly, I did once buy a leopard print top, though, and it really suited me! My hairdresser wears a lot of leopard print and it really suits her and never looks 'Bet Lynch.'

Maomee · 22/09/2026 15:36

It's a funny one, one the one hand it does have a 'tacky/trashy' association but sometimes can look classy. I do love the faux fur coats you can get that have some subtle print on them e.g. doe print, but don't own any personally

bingobangs · 22/09/2026 15:42

This sentiment is echoed by Joy Montgomery of British Vogue. "There has always been a tension between this print embodying liberation and sexuality, as well as being powerful and yet feminine," she tells the BBC. Montgomery, who is the magazine's commerce editor, recalls a time, not so long ago, when leopard print was associated with an outspoken, "certain type of woman".

clearly many posters still associate it with a certain type of woman!

FKAT · 22/09/2026 15:51

I'm grateful for this thread OP because it's reminded me of the most iconic leopard print wearer of them all - Jackie Collins archive.vanityfair.com/article/share/58c8aa4c-e281-445f-80e6-b6c0f8c4d4f1

Nah it just looks weird and ugly IMO

DelphiniumBlue · 22/09/2026 16:36

I think it's practical. I wear quite a bit leopard print, and one of the reasons is that I prefer patterned fabrics because I'm quite messy, and because too much plain looks dull to me. It's hard trying to find prints that are not ditsy, or big florals or aztec type style. Leopard print is usually quite a small print. I like it with different colour backgrounds, eg khaki or navy.

Spidey66 · 22/09/2026 16:54

I don’t like it, it reminds me of Kat Slater.

I get that’s his opinion but I really don’t see it as powerful etc. just tacky

Newusername2026 · 22/09/2026 17:24

I don't hate it and have a few pieces. was one time a bit of fun glam, then a sort of neutral and now so ubiquitous that it tends to look frumpy

CelestialGazer · 22/09/2026 17:32

SinglebutSorted · 21/09/2026 19:23

Cannot stand any animal print. On anything. I just don’t get the hype!?

On anything? I quite like a good leopard print when seen on, let me think, a leopard.

WhatterySquash · 22/09/2026 17:32

I don’t like it and don’t have any. It’s not that it’s tacky exactly, more that I associate it with confident extroverts, which I’m not. And maybe also with synthetic fabrics which I don’t like either - though I guess you could get animal print natural fabrics, it’s not the norm.

It is everywhere- it annoys me when I see something nice from a distance or small on a screen, and I think it’s a floral or abstract print then on closer inspection it’s leopard again 🙄

I like it on actual leopards though.

I don’t like it on anything either to be honest. None of it.

I’m a confident extrovert, although not loud, but tend to more elegant, streamlined clothes. Do you mean maybe the cat slater, bet lunch type character?

I think the point she’s trying to make is that as it’s historically associated with so called loose, loud, in your face women then maybe that’s why some may perceive it as being tacky or trashy.

I wonder if it was historically associated with more prim and proper women whether it would still be seen as tacky, or would it instead have become classy.

saunalove · 22/09/2026 18:29

Yes, tacky and trashy.

What animal prints are there, anyway? Leopard and zebra. Both awful, in my opinion.

snakeskin? Also awful.

cow? Doesn’t seem popular!

any others?

IStillHearTheWaves · 22/09/2026 18:32

Absolutely loathe it.

BeardySchnauzer · 22/09/2026 18:34

Tiger? Deer? Croc? Can’t think of any others!!

allymccoist · 22/09/2026 18:51

Awful stereotyping, classism and internalised misogyny on this thread.
