Are these shoes fashionable again?

Ballerinas are supposedly in again. I have these shoes from around 2010-2013, are they wearable again? I have them in a few colours, I used to find them very comfortable. I know I can wear what I want but I want to be vaguely fashionable. Are they fashionable again or can you clearly see that they are 15 year old shoes?

I would assume the wearer of these belonged to a religious community.

I usually see lace-ups on nuns, not ballerinas.

ThisIsMyFirstNameChange · 05/09/2026 01:25

Sorry OP but no theyre horrible

Gettingbysomehow · 05/09/2026 01:38

They look a bit old fashioned. I wouldnt wear them and Im in my 60s.
I find most very flat ballets make people walk like a duck and aren't flattering unless you are very slim and have long legs.
I do have some but they have wedge soles like this examlle which are much mkre flattering and less stressful to walk in.

Because it's "Style and Beauty" and personal style isn't something that changes every year. If you look great in palazzos and ridiculous in skinnies, that's not going to change just because skinnies become trendy one year.

What will change over time is your ability to find clothes that you like and work on your body, which is where having a discussion board becomes relevant. This summer, I got loads of palazzos. Last summer, not so much. Next summer, who knows? and I might be asking "anyone know where I can get trousers that look like a long a-line skirt?"

Edited

I think you might have misinterpreted my post!

I was replying to Whynottryagain's question "Does anyone really notice or care what shoes another person is wearing?!" As I think that, on (of all places) the Style & Beauty board, of course they do! She was dismissive of fashion - but wasn't expressing any interest in personal style either.

I'm not some unquestioning slave to fashion - but I am interested in individual style (especially when it includes vintage & preworn, plus a regard for good cuts & fabrics & longevity). I'd much rather read a thread on S&B about vintage jewellery or quirky knitwear brands, than I would another thread about what people have bought at M&S (not that there's anything wrong with clothes shopping there!).

So I completely agree with your point about personal style - it's a form of human expression that evolves slowly over time. And we select what we like from faster-moving fashion trends to inform it.

(Yellow, pale blue, polka dots, capri pants & flip-flops haven't featured in my wardrobe this year - & I doubt if they ever will. I either don't suit them or dislike them. Neither have skinnies - but I've always loved palazzo pants!)

I was interpreting your reply as being to her whole post, not solely the final question. So yes, I did misinterpret your intent.

And we select what we like from faster-moving fashion trends to inform it.

That's better than I could articulate it.

Yes, I realised that after I posted - I should have copied over her last sentence in bold to the beginning of my response. Still getting used to some bits of MN protocol!!!

I wasn’t thinking of nuns. I’m not sure I could tell you what shoes nuns wear!

Oh I know that - I was just commenting as part of the mentions in this thread about knee-high boots being back in - when they're never entirely disappeared for me!

And I thought the article might have had a few of the usual outrageous/uncomfortable/unwearable offerings, but they're actually pretty much all wearable styles boots - of which I have several!

The boot styles aren't new but there seems to a move to a more polished look.
Heeled knee-high boots with a longer overcoat, for example.
It's a style that works so it never really goes away.
Some outfits need a little bit of a heel to work.

No. Donate them and buy new.

Hotter have some remarkably nice stuff, given that their target audience is the Chums crowd.

I like their tall boots.

I have to ask, what is the Chums crowd, please?

I only have a few pairs, as I'm sandals in summer & trainers & boots in autumn/winter. My favourite pair is probably deeply unfashionable now, but I love scallop details on clothing & I found a pair of Chloe ones on Vinted a couple of years ago. Comfy, go with everything & cost £60 ...!

Bloody love Chloe Lauren flats, deeply unfashionable or not!

Gosh why do you still have them?

Because lots of people don't throw things away which still have lots of wear in them?

I mean, they are a pair of basic black flat shoes. I can't see how anyone would object to them.

I think that it's probably the people who buy from the Chums catalogue/website, @Marellain

Were they fashionable in the first place?

florence1234567 · 05/09/2026 12:36

Never liked ballerinas, always preferred loafers.

I find ballerinas quite unflattering, but each to their own.

mondaytosunday · 05/09/2026 12:38

Not sure about that pattern but as a tall person flats never went out of fashion and if my arches could cope I’d be wearing ballerina flats!

Marellain · 05/09/2026 12:59

@TheSquareMile doh! Thankyou! I’ve never seen or heard of that before. I was thinking it was a social group or meme!

I Iove these, sadly sold out online. I prefer ballet flats in neutral colours coming further up the foot. Toe cleavage is unacceptable. I saw them in Grazia. They would go with anything and dont slap you in the face.

Curious as to why toe cleavage is unacceptable to you? It’s just toes?
