New thread and it's welcome to the roaring twenties beauty addicts!

It's been a little quiet on the exciting edit and beauty releases front what with all the advent malarky but summer is drawing to a close and soon those autumn/winter releases and holiday edits will be popping up to tempt us.

If you're new here welcome and hello and for everyone else nice to see you back on Mumsnet's most tempting thread series that you cannot ignore even if you want to. 😈😍😂

Morning, long time lurker on the thread, I hope this is okay to ask!

My DD is turning 14 and is into skincare and make up but has quite sensitive, very pale skin, can anyone reccomend brands, especially make up, that might be good for her please? We usually pick up bits in SNK but am happy to buy from anywhere for some brithday treats for her.

She's more normal skin type then anything but sensitive, has some redness/possibly rosacea.

Thanks!

I would suggest Merit or Rhode if you have a Sephora near you or Ilia at SpaceNK. They all sell clean, natural looking makeup with a good shade range.

OvaHere · 10/09/2026 10:21

Space NK have double points on Medik8. Not sure whether this was a targeted email or for everyone.

I have tried to sort mine out, they only look like this as I did them over the weekend.

Wow ♥️ 🤣
Lovely and organised. I need to take note 🤣♥️

@MrsBnow12 I am so inspired by your tidy organised drawers!

Welcome. Erborian Red Correct Skin Tint is good for redness. I use it as a primer sometimes but it's also fine as a light tint. It does bring redness down without looking like heavy make up. I'm also very pale.

I also like Laneige products especially the overnight sleeping masks. I like the Cica one for redness and the pink Bouncy one. The blue one is also popular.

The Laneige Cream Skin spray is also very nice.

Thank you, she does have a few Laneige bits but I will definiely look at the cica one. I've heard of Erborian too, it's great that Boots have it so and it's 20% off there too!

My DD is 14 and just getting into makeup, also very pale. Her skin isn't great so I don't really want her wearing foundation yet but we happened to be in Selfridges on her birthday and ended up getting her a Charlotte tilbury concealer. They were so lovely on the counter, I think it's a great brand for makeup that age (although expensive so only for a special treat). They were really good at colour matching without putting on too much pressure to buy. I wouldn't get her their skincare, we're sticking to La Roche Posay and that kind of thing for now. But the concealer is great for making her feel she's made up without being too heavy on her skin.

Most of her other makeup is things that I've bought and passed onto her because they don't suit me 😆

Ah yes, I forgot about CT - I think some bits from there will make a lovely birthday treat! Thank you!

I did previously look at Rhode but the skincare kit was £117 and I wasnt sure if I could justify that for giving it a try but I think it would definitely earn trendy points!

Maybe I'll just get one item and one of those lip glosses and see how it goes and get her something else for xmas if it goes well. I wasnt sure if the skincare was actually good or just hyped up!

I quite fancy trying something from Merit too, this might end up being expensive!

Thank you!

New oh my cream edit. It’s a nice selection but not amazing value. However, they still have their goodies bag gwp available which this spend qualifies for.

@Fillybuster Just a different perspective, but do we know for sure that the Fairy isn't selling counterfeit products? I know someone else earlier in the week queried the origins and I think they're right to. I don't believe that they buy things from CB for their business and just so happen to get all those GWPs. Who buys for a business at retail RRP?

I haven’t tried Rhode skincare and I’m sure there’s better out there (for better value!) but I have a few blushes, a bronzer, the highlighting milk and a few lip glosses all of which I like.

At that age, for skincare, I’d probably stick with the French pharmacy brands (Avene, Bioderma, La Roche Posay) and some of the more widely available Korean brands (like Beauty of Joseon and Laniege).

I'm pretty confident the medik8 c tetra I got from the fairy was legit - identical to the ones I've had before & after bought directly from medik8/CB. And I checked carefully, because I thought the same!

I've only bought that one goody bag from the fairy, but if you think about the range of products that's in each of those GWPs/edits they sell, I don't see how they could counterfeit them all.

I do find it odd that they only sell full sets, when they would probably make more money listing the products separately

JoRaRaRa · 10/09/2026 14:38

I check all the codes and all fairy's products (where I can check) have been legit. Some have even matched the product code on the cult beauty stuff.

I don't think they're getting them when they order from CB as the gwp with the medik8 tetra in was up on vinted on the same day that the gwp became available online. I think they either get them from like an auction place, say if CB have made too many, stealing or buying them from work.

I don't like to think that I'm funding criminal behaviours so I like to think that they bulk buy them. I have noticed though that all of mine have turned up in previously used boxes that are similar to the boxes cult beauty use which has made me wonder if he works there and they let him take home boxes that returns have come in.

user593 · 10/09/2026 14:50

They told me they buy products on CB to sell elsewhere and as part of that process they get the GWPs which they then sell on on Vinted because they can’t sell bundle products where they sell the individual products. I can’t explain why they had them the same day though unless they get same day delivery? I think CB do occasionally so that.

In any event, the products I’ve bought from them have all been good, and things I’ve used before so I like to think I’d know if they weren’t!

IlovePond · 10/09/2026 15:05

There have been lots of things missing from this year’s CB advent calendars, so it looks like theft may well be happening somewhere in their packing operation. (Either that, or massive incompetence!)

It wouldn’t surprise me if theft on an almost industrial scale isn’t taking place in some companies’ warehouses.

I know someone who works for a huge manufacturing company and the sheer volume of stuff being nicked is breathtaking and nobody saying anything because of being too scared and/or involved 🤷‍♀️

I’m not saying that’s what’s happening here, but it would be interesting to know what CB would say if they were asked how/why GWPS were being sold online by individuals. (They probably wouldn’t answer 😹 but they might!)

@JoRaRaRa - maybe CB offered you a fiver for the Medik8 because that’s what they paid for it. (I’m thinking back to the £5 broth debacle!)

I’m pleased you finally got £35 out of them - not as good as a replacement but well done for persevering.

JoRaRaRa · 10/09/2026 15:25

@IlovePond I just think it's best for us to not ask questions and let's just assume he's getting them legally 🤣

I knew I weren't going to get the full medik8 RRP but glad that I've got a good amount back that I can put towards it. I did pick up one on vinted this morning so I'll wait and see if that turns up before spending the credit from CB.

IlovePond · 10/09/2026 15:31

Glad you managed to source a replacement @JoRaRaRa !

IlovePond · 10/09/2026 15:34

My SNK emails go to spam and I normally delete without reading. However, I am glad I read today’s, as they have given me a code for a free body wash with any purchase - no minimum spend - for my second Nduldge anniversary!

Weirdly CB have sent me a 15% off code as I haven’t bought anything for a while. But I bought perfume samples last week! Maybe they don’t count 😹

I got the full RRP back on an item in the Sali Hughes edit which had gone bad but I threatened them with chargeback, breach of contract, etc. Took three or four messages but got there in the end.

IlovePond · 10/09/2026 16:07

Good for you @user593

I think a lot of the stuff in edits/beauty boxes is likely to be older stock, but it shouldn’t actually be ‘off’/unsafe!

I think it was probably more likely a manufacturing fault (dried out, maybe not sealed properly?) but I stuck by the principle I should be put back in the position I would have been in had they not breached the contract so they either had to credit the RRP or replace it. I didn’t actually check the law but that sounds broadly correct 😅

IlovePond · 10/09/2026 16:16

I am glad you got it sorted @user593

I wish companies would improve their CS - every issue shouldn’t turn into a huge fight!

Ooh, can you remember which item? I got that edit and haven't used much of it yet, so I ought to check, but don't want to break the seals on everything unnecessarily.

It was the Sunday Riley CEO Afterglow.

Thelifeofawife · 10/09/2026 17:06

@JoRaRaRa those Morphe palettes look nice…off to have a look! @OvaHere I can’t comment on these particular ones, but have a couple of other Morphe ones and they are my go to (ridiculous considering how many expensive palettes I have!), they blend well and have good longevity, for me anyway.

@Fillybuster I hope you manage to get a positive resolution. Definitely make them return it, and if it looks different to any photos you listed, that will be your way to dispute it. Perhaps you could also compare to others you have in your stash?
Sadly, if they have used it previously, they could have decanted into an old bottle and put something else into the one you sent - might seem far fetched but there are some real chancers out there.

I’ve had mixed experiences with vinted. I had one where I’d prefer some shampoo & conditioner but only one of the bottles turned up, the seller was very apologetic and I believe they were genuine (I wonder if it was removed during shipping). I got a refund and they didn’t ask me to return the shampoo - I’m hoping they got some compensation.

I recently bought an item of clothing and it arrived smelling of fake tan and had marks on it. Seller tried to argue that it’s mostly inside the top and that I could just wash it, and kept going on about the price I’d paid (I paid the price they listed). It was their rudeness that really annoyed me more than anything.

Thelifeofawife · 10/09/2026 17:12

@JoRaRaRa How did you manage to get the palette for £19.58? It’s coming up at £29 for me (I’m logged in on the app)
