Footwear for DH when wearing shorts??

whiteroseredrose · Today 09:34

Hi. We need some help please.

DH is late 50s. We went out last night and he wore a nice short sleeved shirt and chino shorts. But on his feet he had desert shoes and suit socks. We both know that they looked wrong but we had no idea what would look right.

We were going to a town centre restaurant.

Please, people who understand style, can you make suggestions?

Thank you.

No socks, and sandals.

Boating shoes

Depends on his style and where you live, etc.

My DP lives in shorts, but we're in Cornwall. Footwear is either flip flops, converse with no socks, or hiking boots and hiking socks depending on what's on.

Seems to be the norm down here. Probably wouldn't work in a city!

Dh would have worn trainers and socks. But I also wear trainers and socks. Shoes without socks just feels a bit grim to me, sweaty feet 🤢
If he’s just running errands he’ll go out in shorts and flip flops.

My husband would wear smart trainers of some kind. Like clean and new-looking sambas or something similar with trainer socks. Or Birkenstocks with no socks.

or something like this:

My DH (mid-forties) and my DF (mid-seventies) both wear slip on sketchers or boat shoes (no socks) with shorts. My DH has really messed up feet from running and so never wears anything that shows his toes.

Another option is deck shoes… maybe no socks with those or just small trainer liner type of socks.

No socks, and sandals.

The importance of comma placement Grin

DH wears driving shoes in this scenario ie summer shorts but smartish. I don’t think he wears socks with them or if he does they’re the small hidden ones.

Divebar2021 · Today 09:45

My DH would go for 2 strap Arizona Birkenstocks in a classic brown. I think if he was wearing shorts for dinner he’d probably wear a linen long sleeved shirt and just roll the cuffs a couple of times rather than a short sleeved shirt. It would need to be a pretty casual restaurant for him not to put trousers on.

My DH the same age and we had the same problem. He always had hot feet! I’ve got him into Tom’s. He got the trainers and the deck shoes which he wears without socks.. Wears trainers to work (with socks.)

canvas much cooler than sweaty leather.

Boat shoes with the hidden trainer socks. Or clean white plain converse or sambas. Or Birkenstocks on holiday!

ElleDeeCB · Today 09:54

I was also going to suggest TOMS

Gettingbysomehow · Today 09:57

Very nice.

pizzaHeart · Today 10:00

DH would wear boating shoes with trainer socks. Socks are visible but just a tiny bit. He prefers them with socks so it’s about comfort not style.

whiteroseredrose · Today 10:02

Thank you for all the ideas. Unfortunately he won’t go sockless. I think I might suggest smarter trainers like the Gant ones. He could have trainer socks with them?

Will also look at some of the sandals. Not for home, but he may wear them on holidays.

Actually, boat shoes and v small socks may also be acceptable haha.

Fair enough, I dislike going sockless too

Would he wear deck shoes or driving shoes with this kind of hidden sock?

minipie · Today 10:04

Ah cross posted

KrazyKatty · Today 10:05

Nothing wrong with wearing socks as they’ll be more comfortable and hygienic than wearing some types of sandals without them.

If he’s actually worried about what other people think (??!) then he could wear the short ankle trainer socks?

DH and I both wear whatever the hell we want to. 😂

parlona · Today 10:15

Deck shoes.

CinnamonSweet73 · Today 10:20

Same age, boat shoes, no socks.

Pedant61 · Today 10:20

My husband, similar age, would probably not wear shorts to go to dinner. Nor a short-sleeved collared shirt, tbh (but that's mainly because I think they're grim - just wear a normal shirt with the sleeves rolled up).
But, anyway, shorts are OK with light trainers and trainer socks/liners. Or deck shoes, no socks. Sandals are for the beach or garden, not a restaurant.

hahabahbag · Today 10:23

What does he like wearing? Converse? Trainers? Dark brown older retro trainers look good, sandals, deck shoes…. Anything goes really
