Footwear for DH when wearing shorts??

whiteroseredrose · 11/07/2026 09:34

Hi. We need some help please.

DH is late 50s. We went out last night and he wore a nice short sleeved shirt and chino shorts. But on his feet he had desert shoes and suit socks. We both know that they looked wrong but we had no idea what would look right.

We were going to a town centre restaurant.

Please, people who understand style, can you make suggestions?

Thank you.

My husband, similar age, would probably not wear shorts to go to dinner. Nor a short-sleeved collared shirt, tbh (but that's mainly because I think they're grim - just wear a normal shirt with the sleeves rolled up).
But, anyway, shorts are OK with light trainers and trainer socks/liners. Or deck shoes, no socks. Sandals are for the beach or garden, not a restaurant.

How are short-sleeved shirts grim?! Confused

No socks, and sandals.

I'm forbidden from showing actual feet - so it's deck shoes without socks in my house. You don't get blisters if you only wear them from car to bar!

MN thinks you look like a bus driver..

Shewas · 11/07/2026 11:31

The desert shoes are probably Ok, but with no show socks?

Most middle aged men I know would have worn trainers. Either suede retro ones or leather ones with a white rubber sole if they were aiming to be smart casual.

Fionuala · 11/07/2026 11:39

Sandals. My husband has good leather pair. They look great.

whiteroseredrose · 11/07/2026 11:43

Haha. Thank you for all of the input. I’m learning a lot. Left to his own devices DH can dress like a 1950s seaside postcard but without the knotted hankie on top.

Lots of ideas though. Thank you.

Thank you for all the ideas. Unfortunately he won’t go sockless. I think I might suggest smarter trainers like the Gant ones. He could have trainer socks with them?

Will also look at some of the sandals. Not for home, but he may wear them on holidays.

Will he not go sockless because of sweatiness? My husband swears by Keens sandals as the design means his feet don’t sweat/rub and they’re very comfy, but also look fine smart-casual or casual. https://www.keenfootwear.co.uk/products/mens-clearwater-cnx-leather-dark-earth-black

I think the socks are to stop rubbed feet and blisters. He is prone to that.

My partner would wear his Ralph Lauren train 89 trainers they come in lots of colours very smart casual.

Shoes with no socks are not good for your feet and sweat goes into the shoes. Yuk!

Plain smartish trainers or boat shoes with socks. The colour combination matters.

Boat shoes and trainer socks. Shoes without socks is grim

Snippit · 11/07/2026 12:07

My hubby loves wearing shorts whenever he can, and at 62 he has amazing muscular legs, sorry I digress 😝.

He has and still plays lots of sport and over the years it has ruined his toe nails and he hates wearing sandals that shows them. So it’s either trainers or hiking boots, then I found a solution, fisherman’s shoes/sandals. They keep his feet lovely and cool and look pretty presentable 🤗

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 11/07/2026 12:13

I go for either sandals or a smart pair of trainers or boat shoes, with ankle socks.

Me and style have admittedly never been seen in the same room though

WhatToWearMilan · 11/07/2026 12:14

My dh wears plain coloured shorts - navy, kahki & grey with plain tshirts or polo shirts & kahki coloured 2 strap birkenstocks

potterspot · 11/07/2026 12:16

Deck shoes are the easiest things to wear.

Boston Birkenstocks if you want toe cover.

whiteroseredrose · 11/07/2026 12:17

@StylishAndBeautiful Thank you for that. I have forwarded it to him!

DH wears deck shoes.

potterspot · 11/07/2026 12:21

Visible socks are in but they don’t work with deck shoes.

PhaedraTwo · 11/07/2026 12:24

DappledThings · 11/07/2026 11:25

Socks and sandals entirely defeats the point of sandals and will always look very silly.

In your opinion. In mine, no socks looks silly and dated.

MN loves stereotypes about how stylish nationalities are. If I were going to make sweeping generalisations I'd say the Korean, Japanese and other South East Asian visitors/tourists/residents in my city are the stand out dressers. Just seen a young g man from that demographic looking very stylish in socks and sandals

potterspot · 11/07/2026 12:24

And it’s normal to wear socks with Boston but not Arizona.

ImPamDoove · 11/07/2026 12:27

But on his feet he had desert shoes and suit socks.

😮I’d have not let him out of the house like that! (Not just the shoes and socks, but the short sleeved shirt too).

My husband wears shorts all summer with Birkenstock Arizonas. He has a tan pair and a black pair.

PhaedraTwo · 11/07/2026 12:30

Wowisthisit · 11/07/2026 11:18

Wow 😂

Why "wow"?

I don't think my husband has ever worn shorts off a squash court. In hot weather he'd wear light, loose, cotton or linen trousers.
