Footwear for DH when wearing shorts??

whiteroseredrose · 11/07/2026 09:34

Hi. We need some help please.

DH is late 50s. We went out last night and he wore a nice short sleeved shirt and chino shorts. But on his feet he had desert shoes and suit socks. We both know that they looked wrong but we had no idea what would look right.

We were going to a town centre restaurant.

Please, people who understand style, can you make suggestions?

Thank you.

Toms

No socks with sandals looks dated? Forget other shoes, actual sandals. Designed for hot weather. You think they look dated if worn as intended with no socks?

That's hilarious. Are you saying the youth these days would wear these with socks and that is deemed fashionable?

Those? Yes very dated.

How very odd. I have been looking whilst out and about and not seen anyone in socks and sandals at all. Lots of people just wearing sandals like normal.

I've been enjoying wearing these, https://www.whitestuff.com/p/7561/trek-patterned-strap-footbed-sandal/PINK_MLT, pretty much constantly for weeks in this weather and obviously not with socks because it would entirely defeat the object. And would look preposterous.

Loafers/driving shoes, with no show socks

Whatthefork1 · 11/07/2026 18:12

My DH is 35 so considerably younger but he usually wears a smart trainer with shorts, or brown work style boots (red backs) depending on where he is going (we live in the countryside so those boots are definitely the norm around here) he would never go sock less though and neither would I to be honest, we just wear small trainer socks.
I think boat shoes and toms look great, but DH won’t wear anything like that.

jenny38 · 11/07/2026 18:40

Nice trainers, trainers socks

Icantreadthesmallprint · 11/07/2026 20:11

My DH who cares about such things would wear deck shoes and mini socks in this situation I think.

I wear whatever I can tolerate when it's hot and am grateful he puts up with me.

Coffeeismyfriend1 · 11/07/2026 20:16

Deck shoes would look the smartest but if not smart trainers or converse with trainer socks or a smart leather style sandal (no socks with the sandals!)

Socks and sandals entirely defeats the point of sandals and will always look very silly.

I'm not sure the Romans would have agreed with that. I suspect that despite our conditioning, the change in fashion is for something far more sensible, even if it is sadly more down to a lack of interest in appealing to pervy men where girls and women are concerned.

Why would socks with sandals be more sensible? The point of them is to allow your feet to be open and cool as much as possible in hot weather. Socks actively work against their sole (pun intended) purpose. That's what makes it look daft.

The vast majority are not wearing socks with flat sandals and I work in fashion..

Vogue with disagree with you. It's a look I see a lot.

When Did Socks With Sandals Stop Being Cringe?

From fashion faux pas to front-row staple, socks with sandals have undergone one of fashion’s most unexpected rebrands

Blisters, calluses, abrasions from dust and grit, sunburn, that sort of thing.

Not those. No. The absence or presence of socks wouldn't make a difference there.

Topseyt123 · 11/07/2026 21:37

In hot weather I either wear sandals without sock, or my crocs, also without socks.

I'm ultra-stylish, me! And I don't care what others think.

Malinia · 11/07/2026 21:56

DH wears deck shoes or suede loafers, no socks. Sometimes he wears trainers with little socks but I prefer the proper shoes.

ChaliceinWonderland · 11/07/2026 22:57

Go to Next. Not only is the sale on.. but lots of choice for mens feet.

Smudgesmith · 11/07/2026 23:22

My husband would wear brown leather boat shoes or sandals. Led and bought by me as he's a bit colour blind.

AlexFurbison · 11/07/2026 23:24

Adidas Montreals with trainer socks.

Depends on his style and where you live, etc.

My DP lives in shorts, but we're in Cornwall. Footwear is either flip flops, converse with no socks, or hiking boots and hiking socks depending on what's on.

Seems to be the norm down here. Probably wouldn't work in a city!

Get some anklet socks to go in the converse trainers or his feet will smell, get fungus and it will make the shoes last longer.

SweetnsourNZ · 12/07/2026 01:31

Birkenstock sandals and converse sneakers are what my older boys wear. Flip flops around the house.

EleanorMc67 · 12/07/2026 01:55

Deck shoes (with hidden socks!) recommended on style & beauty ...??!!! Yikes ... 😶

When I found this out last year I was pleased to find that i had been a dedicated follower of fashion without even realising it.
Apparently lots of teens and twenties will not be seen in company with people wearing no socks or hidden socks.

Thank goodness for that!

i always feel much more comfortable with socks and I actually thing socks and sandals can look great! No dark socks - they must be pastel colours or white.

I think it looks especially good with wedges and block heels for women.

Ceramiq · 12/07/2026 07:04

Short sleeved shirt? No
Shorts? No

The problem is less the shoes and socks than the outfit.

Lavender1974 · 12/07/2026 08:19

Boat shoes all the way. My husband lives in his Timberland boat shoes and chino shorts throughout summer and has had around 10 pairs over the years. Timberland ones last him around two years of constant wearing.
