Footwear for DH when wearing shorts??

whiteroseredrose · Today 09:34

Hi. We need some help please.

DH is late 50s. We went out last night and he wore a nice short sleeved shirt and chino shorts. But on his feet he had desert shoes and suit socks. We both know that they looked wrong but we had no idea what would look right.

We were going to a town centre restaurant.

Please, people who understand style, can you make suggestions?

Thank you.

Boat shoes

What are driving shoes and what are desert shoes 🤔

As for slip on Skechers in your 40s 😳 … unless he looks like Jamie redknapp of course 🤣… but even he wouldn’t wear those socially.

DH is late 50s and would wear sambas or another adidas trainer with hidden socks

Driving shoes are a bit like loafers but softer and more flexible. Often suede or really soft leather

hahabahbag · Today 10:27

Btw I was in a restaurant yesterday and 99% of men were in shorts (saw one man in jeans) and footwear varied most wore visible socks btw. I’m not saying my town is ultra fashionable but this was a cross section of ages 18-70 at a guess and it isn’t cheap. A band came on later and it was at capacity.

Based on DH: flip flops, sandals with an open toe, sandals with an enclosed toe, deck shoes, trainers, boots, wellingtons, chainsaw boots.

Probably not the last three in a restaurant but he has to a pub.

No socks, and sandals.

I just heard last night from a fashioning that this is old hat now and regarded as naff.
The thing now is for socks with sandals.
It's a bit like those socks which do not cover the ankles are also naff.
But agree avoid formal dark socks.
Maybe pastel or a bright design?

Heard from a fashionista

DP favours beige boat shoes, which I think look very nice with smart shorts and linen shirts. No socks ( which I personally dislike, but they're his feet ).

Trainers and socks with shorts for casual wear, or flip flops if not walking any great distance.

I quite like the leather mule sandals linked above too.

DaisyChain505 · Today 10:45

Deck/boat shoes with invisible socks

Birkenstock sandals

Smart casual trainers.

DappledThings · Today 10:48

Sandals seems the glaringly obvious choice in hot weather.

Cannedlaughter · Today 10:51

Adidas Gazelle trainers with secret socks
or a summer loafer or boat shoe.
my H lives in the Gazlelle trainers with shorts and wears a loafer for smarter things.

Bristolandlazy · Today 10:52

Boat or deck shoes, no socks.

alexdgr8 · Today 10:55

Socks should be well visible extending 3 or 4 inches above the ankle.

luckylavender · Today 10:57

Trainers & trainer socks. Or deck shoes

When I found this out last year I was pleased to find that i had been a dedicated follower of fashion without even realising it.
Apparently lots of teens and twenties will not be seen in company with people wearing no socks or hidden socks.

Thank you for all the ideas. Unfortunately he won’t go sockless. I think I might suggest smarter trainers like the Gant ones. He could have trainer socks with them?

Will also look at some of the sandals. Not for home, but he may wear them on holidays.

The owner of the hairdresser's I'm sitting in is wearing navy shorts with navy and white trainers (couldn't tell you the brand) with white socks with an embroidered flower motif. He looks fine.

Re socks and sandals the most stylish man in my office wears socks with sandals (although not shorts)

StylishAndBeautiful · Today 11:03

Light colour socks - pale grey/green/blue/fawn
Boat shoes. (e.g. Leather Classic Boat Shoes by Timberland at M&S)
Deck shoes (like Vans or similar)
Leather leisure trainers (veja/samba type ones)
Birkenstocks.(not with socks)
Some sandals - maybe Teva?

Not converse.

Bless their hearts. And their little cotton socks keeping their feet hot and sweaty.

Mycatmax · Today 11:11

Trainers and socks
Sandals and socks
Where I live, not wearing socks is social suicide tbh

No, they're being sensible. Sweaty bare feet in shoes is ugh.

My husband, similar age, would probably not wear shorts to go to dinner. Nor a short-sleeved collared shirt, tbh (but that's mainly because I think they're grim - just wear a normal shirt with the sleeves rolled up).
But, anyway, shorts are OK with light trainers and trainer socks/liners. Or deck shoes, no socks. Sandals are for the beach or garden, not a restaurant.

Wow 😂

Socks and sandals entirely defeats the point of sandals and will always look very silly.

persilasper · Today 11:26

I agree with those saying no to invisible/trainer socks - white ankle socks or sports socks are the thing to wear now it seems.

Old people have always said this about fashions. 😆
