Footwear for DH when wearing shorts??

whiteroseredrose · Today 09:34

Hi. We need some help please.

DH is late 50s. We went out last night and he wore a nice short sleeved shirt and chino shorts. But on his feet he had desert shoes and suit socks. We both know that they looked wrong but we had no idea what would look right.

We were going to a town centre restaurant.

Please, people who understand style, can you make suggestions?

Thank you.

I think the socks are to stop rubbed feet and blisters. He is prone to that.

Your husband's instincts are entirely right.
Any young person would feel an affinity with him.
Say it loud and say it proud
I. wear. socks.

I thought I'd drifted into Gransnet with some of the comments here.
Rather surprising.

StylishAndBeautiful · Today 12:48

The classic one. They look better with socks on that site.

I know! Seriously!? I am in my sixties and understand the sock situation!

off topic but i don’t actually understand why Gransnet exists, the demographics of the two sites seem fairly similar.

alexdgr8 · Today 12:59

Gransnet is aimed at the over 50s.
But anyone can use it.
There is overlap of course.
But the feel of each site is quite distinct.
Much slower on GN.
Less traffic.
Hardly any swearing and disproval of it .
I have learned useful things from both sites.

In the socks debate, sweeping generalisations coming up, from what I've seen on here - wearing socks? under 25, fine I'm under 25. I'm automatically cool.

Over 60-socks are fine because either you genuinely don't care or you know you're cool.

Thank you for all the ideas. Unfortunately he won’t go sockless. I think I might suggest smarter trainers like the Gant ones. He could have trainer socks with them?

Will also look at some of the sandals. Not for home, but he may wear them on holidays.

You can wear these with socks. My husband does:

@alexdgr8I feel like the average user on MNs is over 50, it’s definitely not a young site.

Yes, I'm sure - but for a quick restaurant visit you should be OK? Day's sightseeing I can understand.

Google men's chino shorts and click images - loads of shorts with different style shoes and sandals.

Thatfattrollop · Today 13:58

DH wears boat shoes or Birkenstock sandals. No socks.

In your opinion. In mine, no socks looks silly and dated.

MN loves stereotypes about how stylish nationalities are. If I were going to make sweeping generalisations I'd say the Korean, Japanese and other South East Asian visitors/tourists/residents in my city are the stand out dressers. Just seen a young g man from that demographic looking very stylish in socks and sandals

No socks with sandals looks dated? Forget other shoes, actual sandals. Designed for hot weather. You think they look dated if worn as intended with no socks?

That's hilarious. Are you saying the youth these days would wear these with socks and that is deemed fashionable?

I didn't catch her name but I heard a respected fashionista on the radio last night making this very point
That socks are to be worn with sandals.
And of course all footwear generally.
I've seen many young and more mature people wearing socks with sandals.
The no sock look is indeed very dated.

Papyrophile · Today 14:38

Posh leather fisherman's sandals? With or without socks. Or colourful moccasin/loafers.

I was just quoting what is on the front page of GN
That it is aimed at the over 50s.
From reading it I'd guess that most posters are retired but there is overlap with MN of course.
Many GNetters object to the swearing and harsher comments on MN.
I enjoy both sites.

potterspot · Today 14:46

The vast majority are not wearing socks with flat sandals and I work in fashion..

3amamama · Today 14:50

Mine would wear decent trainers (not running ones) with socks, or birk clogs with or without socks.

whiteroseredrose · Today 14:59

Thank you so much everyone. There are some great ideas on here. Now I need to tackle DH!

Thank you @whiteroseredrose . You sound like a great couple. Have a good weekend.

DP is early 50’s and I think he dresses very well. He wears either white (with a coloured trim) Nike air with sports socks, always bright white or he wears smart white or navy leather trainers with a white sole.
