Footwear for DH when wearing shorts??

whiteroseredrose · 11/07/2026 09:34

Hi. We need some help please.

DH is late 50s. We went out last night and he wore a nice short sleeved shirt and chino shorts. But on his feet he had desert shoes and suit socks. We both know that they looked wrong but we had no idea what would look right.

We were going to a town centre restaurant.

Please, people who understand style, can you make suggestions?

Thank you.

Deck shoes (with hidden socks!) recommended on style & beauty ...??!!! Yikes ... 😶

I did wonder about that.

potterspot · 12/07/2026 08:33

@PhaedraTwobut you are aware just because something is in Vogue (Arabia) mag it isn’t necessarily adopted? I work in buying for a big brand, again there isn’t a plethora of socks with the types of sandals I have mentioned.

Short sleeved shirt? No
Shorts? No

The problem is less the shoes and socks than the outfit.

Shorts are a no? Some men have great legs, why shouldn’t men wear shorts?

potterspot · 12/07/2026 08:44

Socks & sandals is a thing every few years anyway as opposed to ever being a huge trend. Sometimes it translates more than others eg socks & sliders heavily influenced by the 90s revival which then revived crocs & socks & birks & socks. Plus just the general resurgence of socks over the last 5 years.

I don't know who you are or what you do. I do know from my own experience that I see people wearing socks with sandals, including the assistants the 2 of my favourite independent shops. You say you work for "a big brand" - presumably mainstream high street? I'm not talking about or much interested in mainstream high street.

I'm not sure what type of sandals you mentioned but if you haven't seen people wearing socks with fisherman's sandals that seems odd for someone working in fashion.

I don't like shorts. I think light, loose cotton or linen trousers look far more stylish but I don't understand your comment that "some men have great legs"

If male shorts are acceptable why only for men with "great legs"?

Nope high end, have worked for high street though eg Topshop during PG days & we are all still in the (small) industry in various brands.

I'm not talking about or much interested in mainstream high street.

You were the one claiming lots were wearing the look though which would imply mainstream?

I linked the sandals I was wearing as examples of what would look odd with socks, you told me I was wrong. I can’t remember the last time I saw fisherman sandals & socks, maybe spring. I actually see far less fisherman sandals this summer.

The biggest shift sandals wise is people not wearing sandals and more ballet flats instead. And trainers of course amongst the youth. When it’s 30 degrees though I need air!

@PhaedraTwoI never said men can only wear shorts if they have good legs though. However I do appreciate a pair of great legs. It’s why I
love going to Wimbledon!

Why bother inserting "some men have great legs"? I'm genuinely puzzled why you need to mention that.

Imagine if a man had written that about female tennis players.

Why are you overanalysing what was probably a light-hearted post?

Imagine if a man had written that about female tennis players.
The poster didn't say whether or not the 'great pair of legs' were male or female legs.

It doesn't actually matter what sex the poster is but given the links to sandals the poster says the poster wears it's likely the poster is female.

And if the poster considers shorts are an objectively acceptable item of clothing for men there was no need to add the comment about "great legs".

potterspot · 12/07/2026 16:23

@PhaedraTwoare you normally so uptight? Maybe take your socks off before you overheat!

StylishAndBeautiful · 12/07/2026 16:43

@PhaedraTwo , your posts come across as if you think that you are the only person with any inkling about style.

Much of what you say makes sense but your tone detracts from the message.

Papyrophile · 12/07/2026 17:46

My BIL has very nice legs, and wears shorts all summer, with carefully chosen shoes and sometimes socks too. DH has short stumpy legs and will never look chic in shorts. But he will be more comfortable in cooler clothing.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 12/07/2026 17:48

Mandals. Or deck shoes if he insists on wearing socks with birkies.

LadyRoughDiamond · 12/07/2026 18:11

My husband had a similar dilemma and ended up buying a pair of tan suede loafers to wear without socks. Suede is more breathable and looks more forgiving next to bare skin. Otherwise, for more casual wear, he just wears lo-rise trainers - Stan Smiths, or a pair of canvas Superga’s - again, without socks because we’re ancient Gen X’s.

BezMills · 12/07/2026 18:12

Crocs and socks. If there's a dress code, crocs with obnoxious socks.

I'm Gen X and there's no way I'd wear shoes without socks. Ugh! They'd stink.

Boat Shoes: Boat & Deck Shoes for Men & Women

They all look perfectly nice. Not sure what the PP's issue with them is. I wouldn't wear them without socks as I think they'd get sweaty but combined with nice shorts and a short-sleeved shirt makes a perfectly pleasant outfit for dinner in a heatwave.

Being performatively sniffy about something as practical and unremarkable as a short-sleeved shirt is tedious.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/07/2026 14:46

Dh lives in shorts in summer, and wears ‘deck’ type leather shoes, with trainer socks that don’t show. To me they look fine.

StylishAndBeautiful · 13/07/2026 15:34

@DappledThings , I think of deck shoes as being canvas and boat shoes the leather moccasin ones.

They are probably interchangeable.
