How much do you estimate the contents of your make up bag are worth?
Ive roughly added mine up and ive got it to £200

Melarus · 03/04/2026 14:18

About £120, but some of it dates back to the 90s. Or before!

That's quite a haul, @fairylightsanon 😃 you are clearly the right person to answer: who makes the best eyeshadow?

Waftaround · 03/04/2026 14:24

Day to day make up £250 probably.
I buy a mix of premium and cheaper brands. I like Trinny and Clarins.
For budget stuff I like Beauty Pie, Nyx and Revolution.

Whole make up drawer, I dread to think. I had a clear out recently and am committed to a no buy year unless I fully run out of an item.

So I’m not buying any new primer for example because I have so fucking many it’s embarrassing. Some were from my beauty box or free samples. If I try and don’t like it I’ll bin it or give to a friend.

Bore off.

i recently had to buy a whole new bag of day to day makeup because I foolishly left it all at home when I was away for the weekend. I spent about £380 plus about £20 on a set of RT brushes to slap it on with.

My whole collection is ridiculous though. I don’t even want to think about how much it cost. I definitely fell into the overconsumption trap from watching too many beauty content creators. I enjoy it though: one of my ultimate stress relievers is to go into my beauty room and sit down with some good music on while doing my face.

Powder eyeshadow can get bacteria in it because your make up brushes are on your eyelids, then in the shadows and you're adding bacteria each time.
I think I read that the 'life' of eyeshadow is around a year or maybe 2.

They can yes but I sanitise everything to keep things clean

@Waftaround What's Trinny eyeshadow and blusher like? I was looking at the palest blusher. Currently using Nars but fancied perhaps a cream one.

Have you got any Clarins lip perfector- the lip gloss in a tube? Is it worth £25 or is it like any other lip gloss for a tenner?

I used to LOVE makeup geek but they’re gone now Sad
for cheap I love the ELF bite size shadows, they’re a few pounds and a good selection of colours. Also beauty bay own brand palettes and colourpop

higher end I like Natasha denona and Viseart

i don’t like Dior or makeup revolution

for stick eyeshadow then Delilah, Bobbi brown or laura mercier are classics

RosesAndHellebores · 03/04/2026 14:45

I wear a mixture and whats in my make-up bag is the sum total:

Clinique foundation: 44
Clinoque chubby stick blusher 26
Cli ique chubby stick highlighter 26
Hypnose Mascara: 26
No 7 transluscent powder 15
Eyebrow pencil £20
3 lipsticks 76

Probs about £250.

Estee day, night and eyecream c£140
Clinique take off the day £35

This thread has made me feel less excessive.

Now as for dd, she coukd probably fill a suitcase.

DancingNotDrowning · 03/04/2026 14:45

About £400 /£500

dior foundation, blusher, lipstick, gloss and concealer
hourglass primer and bronzer
channel eye palette
VB eye liner
benefit brow pencil and gel
maybeline mascara

and then about £1000 of Mac brushes

JumpinJehoshaphat · 03/04/2026 14:55

I dread to think. It must be hundreds on foundations alone. I absolutely love makeup and skincare - I buy loads of both. I have separate drawers for eyes, lips, base, finish and I have so many makeup brushes, you’d think I’m a pro.

I love Trinny eyeshadow and mostly buy that as I only use cream now. But I did get a couple of beauty pie sticks that are good. Never used Trinny blush.

I’ve got a small lip gloss from my beauty box. It’s nice but not what I’d choose to spend money on really.
Same with lip oils.

I use a Barry M scrub when my lips are dry and lots of balm/oil overnight. Then I just use whatever lip gloss/balm I fancy in the day.

namethisbird · 03/04/2026 16:23

In my day to day make up bag I have totalled it up and it comes to £1071.

My total makeup collection runs in the thousands.

Below is the make up I reach for daily, yes it looks a lot but I only use a touch of each to enhance and use multiple cream and powder products for longevity.

I use a mix of Hourglass, Dior and Hermes makeup brushed which adds an additional cost but I haven’t added that to the below

Primer - Dior £40
Colour Corrector - Erborian £38
Foundation - Dior Forever Foundation stick £48
Concealer - Dior Forever skin correct £34
Contour - Westman Atelier £44
Cream Bronzer - Dior Forever skin bronze £50
Cream Blush - Rhode £25 and Westman Atelier Baby cheeks £44
Setting Powder - Huda Beauty £34
Blur Powder - Laura Mercier £44
Powder Bronzer - Guerlain Terracotta £51
Powder Blush - YSL £44 and Hourglass £46
Highlighter - Westman Atelier £44
Eyeshadow - Dior £62 and Victoria Beckham £48
Mascara - Victoria Beckham £35
Eyeliner - Victoria Beckham £33
Brow Gel - Victoria Beckham £33
Brow Pencil - Victoria Beckham £35
Lipliner - Victoria Beckham £33 and Dior £27
Lipstick - Westman Atelier £44 or Prada £40
Lip Peptides for gloss - Rhode £20
Setting Spray - Charlotte Tilbury £33 and Dior £42

ANagsHead · 03/04/2026 16:44

@namethisbird - would you say each of those is the best of its kind? I’m not really interested in the skin stuff, just eyes and lips.

I’m awaiting delivery of a Westman Atelier Hydrobalm Tinted Lipstick - and am ridiculously excited to try it.

(I only ever own one of any make up item at a time and wait for it to run out before buying the next. I guess the make up bag total might be close to £200, plus a couple of Tom Ford make up brushes.)

patooties · 03/04/2026 16:45

I had my bag stolen last year - my make up bag (the portable one) cost about £500 when I started totting it all up. 😭

KellsBells7 · 03/04/2026 17:02

I don’t wear much make up but do buy premium brands. The cost has gone up since switching to mainly Victoria Beckham products. Whilst the cost of many of her products is similar to other premium brands, the foundation is expensive but fabulous!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 03/04/2026 17:05

Any recommendations for a primer that is perfection for pores? Ive tried
Benefit
Ysl
Smashbox
Rimmel
I need perfection!

I have about eleventy billion premium blushers that push my cost up. I don't really have a fixed make up for day to day, where's the fun in that 🤷‍♀️.

Purplecatshopaholic · 03/04/2026 17:18

Hmmm, quite a lot I suppose, I’ve never added it up. I dont pay attention generally, but one of my dogs ate a Dior lip gloss earlier which I want to replace as I love it, so that focused me, lol.

Her money. If she enjoys make up then good for her. Sweeping assumption seeing as not everyone has children. Like me, for one 💄

Coffeislife · 03/04/2026 17:23

Hope op doesn't mind but while everyone is here. If you could pick just 1 premium item what would it be ?.

Makeup has a shelf life once you open it, usually six months or twelve months. This is because microorganisms from your skin will grow in it. There's a little picture of an open jar with 6M or 12M on the label somewhere to tell you the shelf life.

Your stuff from the 90s needs to go in the bin.

£200 won’t go far with university or a house deposit. Unless you are a time traveller from 1926.

For me right now I would say so. I interchange some of the products quite a lot but right now that’s my routine and it gives a good balance between matte and glowy.

I do prefer Dior for my base and VB beauty for eyes. Her full eye collection is amazing it really doesn’t budge and I have rather oily skin. The VB mascara is possibly the best I have tried.

You won’t be disappointed with buying anything from Westman Atelier. The packaging is so weighty and chic and the products themselves are fabulous they apply beautifully and have great staying power. I have yet to meet a Westman atelier product I don’t like.

Ponderingwindow · 03/04/2026 18:05

My day to day. About 500. I have very little choice in what I buy because of allergies. I also am pretty minimalist.

just the other day I discovered my go to suncream was discontinued. It cost 10. The only one I could get with any speed that was safe was 1/4 the size and cost 45. Since we were having a weekend away, it barely made it through the weekend, and that was with me covering most of my body with spf clothing instead of suncream.

BIossomtoes · 03/04/2026 18:15

fairylightsanon · 03/04/2026 13:32

Not entirely sure I should add it up but that’s eyeshadows only

Phew! That’s made me feel so much better about my 70 odd lipsticks. Thank you.
