Hmm … Interesting question, @Huckleberries!
I’m over 60, so I’ve been buying make up for over fifty years. That’s a lot of experimentation and assessment and re-assessment! Even given the fact that I’m fairly minimalist in what I buy.
Things that impact my choosing and shopping:
Sensitive skin. Not White. Contact lenses for 40 years.
There’s no doubt that the cosmetics industry has evolved exponentially in the decades I’ve been shopping. If you’re under 45 you will have no comprehension whatsoever of the dearth of decent, suitable products I was faced with for ages and ages. Even when the beauty business began to acknowledge my existence I had to wait for the stuff made with higher quality ingredients that didn’t bring me out in hives or turn me into a weird shadowy facsimile of a human being. And no cheap mascara that would throw flakes between my eyes and my lenses.
Besides which, I tend to prioritise skincare and don’t really have much interest in foundation, bronzer, highlighter, etc. So I’m perfectly at ease with spending a lot on the very few products I do use in order to guarantee great colours, performance and user experience.
Definitely no distinction in quality between day or evening, casual or formal. Doing my face is generally very last minute - so dressing up might just mean spending an extra five minutes in front of my mirror.
