School bag Longchamp

I am looking to surprise dd with a Longchamp bag for her birthday. She likes the navy, paper and black colours.

But which is the style that all the girls are wearing to school?

Is it this: Le Pliage Original Large Shoulder Bag
https://www.johnlewis.com/longchamp-le-pliage-original-large-shoulder-bag/black/p5051141?gad_campaignid=20158965733&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD2el1xjO7bxkKRJ6yqwM7ityjWPI&gclid=Cj0KCQjw4PPNBhD8ARIsAMo-iczwYKcXCwun-dVEfNsaTdW4i49m_b6JP5jda-YRCYJNvGrWqNy1HdkaAlFJEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&s_ppc=2dx_mixed_fashion_BAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2

Or the medium sized one?

I know it's got long straps so can be worn as a shoulder bag.

Please help.

As others have said definitely go for the large. I got dd one in year 7 she’s in year 10 now and it’s good as new despite her carrying everything but the kitchen sink round in it.
Yes it’s a bit pricey but at that age it means a a lot to fit in.
When dd has her mates over there is a pile of lonchamps, north face puffas and the same kickers school shoes that look like trainers heaped up in the hall way.

Feteaccompli · 20/03/2026 20:35

I bought my first Le Pliage in 2006 and it lasted 18 years until the corners gave out. Used it for work, as a baby bag and on many trips as a hand luggage bag. It was incredibly hard wearing. Bought a replacement 2 years ago which seems to be made slightly differently (different lining) but so far is equally hard-wearing and is brilliant at keeping stuff inside dry even in a downpour.

voterschoice · 20/03/2026 20:35

I think the navy one I nice and more popular. Go for that, not the black.

voterschoice · 20/03/2026 20:36
  • is nicer
plsdontlookatme · 20/03/2026 21:00

I have to say I only ever saw Le Pliages as school bags in private schools, but I grew up outside London where the state schools aren't particularly leafy. Agree that a dark one will be best - Paper will look manky after a week. Would be lovely to take her out on a little trip to JL/Longchamp proper to choose the one she wants

You can fit a laptop and folders into the large one. Avoid pale colours as they look grubby within minutes. Expect it to get lost or stolen from amongst the 20 other black or navy ones. Consider a different colour instead.

You can have them personalised

KimuraTan · 20/03/2026 22:10

Darker colours as others suggested. As a sports therapist I’ll wade into this and say on days your DD have to carry heavy she should use a backback (uncool I know) to spread the weight evenly. My girls use their Longchamps when they haven’t got a lot of bits to carry around but when packing a laptop and books I insist on a backpack carried bilaterally. As much as I understand teenage looks I am their Mum and want them to have a healthy posture. Sorry - I realise that sounds quite 😴

£125 on a school bag, seriously? More money than sense springs to mind 🫣

PlugPug · 20/03/2026 22:58

My daughter has a medium navy, I don’t know how they’re all managing but the majority have medium at her school. She’s had it two years and after daily use it’s only now got a tiny hole in it. I can’t grumble at the cost when it’s lasted well (I’ll probably buy a new one for her and take her old one lol)

That’s the thing, they all look the bloody same the teen girls, like sheep

maltravers · 20/03/2026 23:07

I like Longchamp leather bags, but I’m a 60 year old professional woman. Am I now down with the kids, or is it only the nylon shopper handbags the teens favour?

£125 for a school bag! The world's gone mad.

But there's a cost of living crisis isn't there! I used to see school bags being slid along the floor, kicked around and generally not treated well, it does seem a lot to pay.

SplodgeWaddler · 20/03/2026 23:15

I'm so glad my DDs were not and still aren't either materialistic or sheep. It's so sad that they all want to have the same.

totally agree. I grew up poor so maybe its me btu I worked in an elite profession and didnt buy myself soemthing liek this - but I see thats wrong now

Oh no are these school bags now?? Does this mean they are no longer a choice for the style conscious adult? Help I have two and use them to death! do I need to consign them to the back of the wardrobe?

(Lighthearted in case not obvious)

My DD sometimes uses her navy one for school. They are very popular around here for upper years and sixth form. Loads of women in my office carry them too so I think they’re pretty universal!

franklymydearscarlett · 21/03/2026 02:16

AMatterOfInfiniteHope · 20/03/2026 18:57

For me too. Especially Miss Selfridge or TopShop.

They still do this too. My DD and all her friends carry their PE kit to school in an urban outfitters bag. If it wears out they go to UO and buy the cheapest thing possible to get a new bag 🤷‍♀️

franklymydearscarlett · 21/03/2026 02:19

My DD is 15 and is lucky enough to have a part time job coaching her sport. She bought herself one of these bags with her first few pay cheques. She was chuffed.

I do not let her carry it to school every day and I’m a bit shocked at people letting their year 7s use these tbh. They should be using back packs to protect their backs and shoulders.

Overtheatlantic · 21/03/2026 02:39

Am I the only one who doesn’t get the love for these bags? I just think they are frumpy looking. Plain but not elegant.

tildathyme · 21/03/2026 05:32

I work with secondary children and almost every girl from years 9-13 has this bag. I would go for black or navy in the large.

UndoRedo · 21/03/2026 05:45

I bought one in my 20s and my daughter now uses it for school, it's the large black one. I didn't realize they were back in fashion but it's very much the in bag

PrimaniTu · 21/03/2026 06:08

steinwayto · 20/03/2026 11:57

This is not the kind of thing to ‘surprise’ with. I would suggest asking her because it’s something she really wants and it would be awful for her not to have the actual one she wants because you chose it based on what MN said ‘is the style all the girls are wearing to school’

Please please just ask her. The disappointment of getting it not quite right is far worse than getting no bag ime.

Definitely this. I work in a school and the girls are carrying large ones I think.

I know this as I have one and it’s the same size and colour as mine but I can’t remember the size. It’s the most common one They’re all carrying black ones btw.

chocopuffs · 21/03/2026 06:08

@Hoppinggreennot sure where you are but it sounds like they are popular school bags and in my part of London I see a lot of school kids with them too.

Chubbawubber · 21/03/2026 06:46

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 20/03/2026 10:37

Yes, but teenage girls want the real thing!

Round here it’s definitely the bag of choice.

Same here. To be honest my ADD has one and it is very robust.

My DD has the same bag for school but I was never going to spend that much for a school bag. Hers was £45ish but looks exactly the same...
She loves it

Divebar2021 · 21/03/2026 07:48

My friend bought me 2 fakes back from Turkey ( one for me and one for DD who is year 9 ). She was a bit disappointed because it was a medium size without the long strap so at Christmas she received the large. I liked mine so much I also got the bigger size in Pink tea. It’s fantastic I love it…. You can throw so much in there. Ironically DD has never used hers for school because she doesn’t want to ruin it. ( and continues with her back pack ). The other bag they all carry is the “ Goyard” although presumably not a real one.
