School bag Longchamp

Folliesandfriends · 20/03/2026 09:18

I am looking to surprise dd with a Longchamp bag for her birthday. She likes the navy, paper and black colours.

But which is the style that all the girls are wearing to school?

Is it this: Le Pliage Original Large Shoulder Bag
https://www.johnlewis.com/longchamp-le-pliage-original-large-shoulder-bag/black/p5051141?gad_campaignid=20158965733&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD2el1xjO7bxkKRJ6yqwM7ityjWPI&gclid=Cj0KCQjw4PPNBhD8ARIsAMo-iczwYKcXCwun-dVEfNsaTdW4i49m_b6JP5jda-YRCYJNvGrWqNy1HdkaAlFJEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&s_ppc=2dx_mixed_fashion_BAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2

Or the medium sized one?

I know it's got long straps so can be worn as a shoulder bag.

Please help.

Both DDs have these, one navy one green which I was lucky enough to get a friend to bring over half price from Brown Thomas. They love them. Really hard wearing and fit loads in. They may be sheep but when you have children with only a few friends who are desperate to fit in you stop caring that they aren’t trend setters or individual. They also carry Urban Outfitters bags, Oshun water bottles, Summer Fridays lip gloss and Haan hand sanitiser - there is plenty of time for them to grow in to who they want to be, sometimes running with the crowd is more important.
OP if you’re near Bicester Village there is a Longchamp store there and they have a small discount off (only worth it if you’re going anyway).

There will be cheaper options that do the same thing!

But teenage girls (and other people, if it matters to them) will know the difference.

voterschoice · 21/03/2026 08:14

YourZippyLion · 20/03/2026 23:01

That’s the thing, they all look the bloody same the teen girls, like sheep

As opposed to you with your original wit and nous, clearly conveyed for all to see by the beautiful eloquence and depth of your contributions.

I agree with avoiding pale ones
I am not passing judgment on these bags as school bags, they would work pretty well but I haven't seen any school kids with them around here.
DD has few and wouldn't have used them for school or college

One of m kid‘s class mates had a LV shopper on her shoulder.
They’re quite a nouve-y family so it wouldn’t have been a fake. I nearly fell over.

VividDeer · 21/03/2026 08:30

I have a year 8, so definitely going to be paying more attention to bag culture around here. Although dd doesn't always follow trends (fortunately). Although if any bag could last 5 years, that would be a miracle indeed!

TheUsualChaos · 21/03/2026 08:38

I thought it was madness when DD asked for one for Christmas but they are nice bags and so far it's lasting really well. Definitely check what colour she likes.

We do have a rule about not using it every day as I worry about the effect on shoulder and posture lugging a heavy shoulder bag about 5 days a week so she usually uses her backpack for two out the five days.

Unfortunately so many of them
at my DD’s school. I found it shocking but I saw all the girls with them with my own eyes (had initially thought it was typical teen exaggeration “everyone has them mum”).

I was shocked - I only was able to afford one in my very late 20s and now they are being used as school bags 🤯😳.

I love them though.

When I was little I desperately wanted a Spirograph. I got given a Swingograph instead. Over 40 years later I can still remember the disappointment. Why on earth would you buy a cheap & nasty fake if you can afford the real thing?

When this type of subject comes up at home my husband (64) always remembers the horror of having the fake trainers from Woolworths that were meant to look like the Adidas totally cool ones that all his school friends had.....and he didn't.

Diosmonet · 21/03/2026 09:27

My dd12 has the large black one with tan trim. I let her use it on the days her book load is lighter - otherwise she has to use her backpack.

Fluffypuppy1 · 21/03/2026 09:58

handsdownthebest · 20/03/2026 18:39

Yep all those people commenting about getting a £5 one at the market.
DD had hers all through school and onto uni.
I have several that we use for travel.
I don't think they look particularly fashionable.
They are just bloody hard wearing.
It saves the buy cheap by twice 😉

Edited

This.

I have one that I take on holidays purely as a bag for any possible daytime use. It folds up tiny so is ideal. Shopping, beach, pool, boat trips. About 20 holidays in 5 years and still looks brand new. Any other bag would look like crap after that.

Ccgag · 21/03/2026 11:19

At my DD’s school they all have the large black one.

I was willing to buy my dd one, but luckily she chose a shoulder bag from another brand which was half the price. Still great quality.

Lararoft · 21/03/2026 12:05

My issue with that bag (and many others) is that it’s nylon and I have sensory problems around that.. shame because it sounds like a useful bag. The teens round my way don’t seem to carry them.
I remember when I was at school (early 90s) drawstring Benetton bags were a thing, mine was pale pink. I didn’t really like the material tho.

InterIgnis · 21/03/2026 13:06

I had a le pliage for school in the early 2000s, in olive I think. I had mine initialed, which is something she may like?

They’re a workhorse of a bag.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 20/03/2026 10:37

Yes, but teenage girls want the real thing!

Round here it’s definitely the bag of choice.

I am gobsmacked at these bags popularity.

my MIL lives overseas and was buying them up wholesale when visiting - so many orders from wider family.

am I the only one who thinks it looks like something a frumpy middle aged housewife would carry in the 1980’s 🤢 ? I say that as a middle aged woman

boring design, boring colour …just blah

but I know Gen Z are in love with them

There’s a whole range of colours! DD has a gorgeous hot pink one that they brought out for the Barbie movie. Plenty of other choices. Navy/black are just popular as they go with everything, especially school uniforms. The whole point of everyday classics is that they don’t need to be particularly exciting.

They're a glorified shopping bags, I use mine for an extra bag ,not my handbag. I thought the same until I was given one and I use it all the time.

It’s a convenient workhorse of a bag that lasts for years. You can use it for bagging shopping, for school, and/or for work. You can take to as a carry on, and for a beach trip. It’s useful for anything you may need a bag for, really. If you’re not using it, you just fold it up until you want to.

It’s a classic. It isn’t meant to be a fashionable bag of the moment, or exciting.

Londonmummy66 · 21/03/2026 16:42

I have the pliage green in black but DC both wanted the original - one in navy and one in black. DD2 now has quite a collection of longchamps mainly acquired from chairty shops but the black one is the one she uses most.

I had the traditional green one, our uniform was also green. It was the least practical school bag ever, I can still feel that string handle digging into my shoulder. And my mum had to repair it with some thicker material when the loop holding the string snapped 😂

I didn’t care though as it was cool 😎

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 21/03/2026 17:49

The hate from middle aged women for these bags as they view them as frumpy reminds me of the same horror at the frumpy fashion of crew socks with leggings - the disgust that young people’s fashion in socks was to have sensible ankle socks on show, not invisible trainer socks. Bur a couple of years on and we’re all covering our ankles now and letting the world see we own socks.

It does seem the biggest push back against young people’s trends and fashions from millennials and Gen X’s are when the fashionable thing is also practical and sensible- it goes against all we were raised with!

ChocoChocoLatte · 21/03/2026 17:52

DD has a burgundy one and it goes well with both the black and navy.

remember to check on Vinted

CookingFatCat · 21/03/2026 17:57

What’s the deal with longchamp bags, serious question as I don’t see why they are so expensive?

Folliesandfriends · 20/03/2026 11:47

Not banned, every other girl in year 9 and above has one of these. It used be the Kanken before that.

My DCs’ school announced that Nike Air Force’s were allowed , so I bought them for both DCs and then 6 weeks later the school decided that they were going on the banned list. I was fuming. No idea why the school changed its mind. Hopefully this doesn’t happen to you.

BauhausOfEliott · 21/03/2026 18:03

loveawineloveacrisp · 20/03/2026 17:02

Why are schools banning them?!!

Because - as my fabulous dad once said to my teacher when my school suddenly banned Doc Martens in the 1990s - schools get a strange pleasure out of banning perfectly harmless and sensible things as soon as they discover kids like them.
