I am looking to surprise dd with a Longchamp bag for her birthday. She likes the navy, paper and black colours.

But which is the style that all the girls are wearing to school?

Is it this: Le Pliage Original Large Shoulder Bag
https://www.johnlewis.com/longchamp-le-pliage-original-large-shoulder-bag/black/p5051141?gad_campaignid=20158965733&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD2el1xjO7bxkKRJ6yqwM7ityjWPI&gclid=Cj0KCQjw4PPNBhD8ARIsAMo-iczwYKcXCwun-dVEfNsaTdW4i49m_b6JP5jda-YRCYJNvGrWqNy1HdkaAlFJEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&s_ppc=2dx_mixed_fashion_BAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2

Or the medium sized one?

I know it's got long straps so can be worn as a shoulder bag.

Please help.

Black puffs coat and Navy Longchamp bag THE look round here and has been for a while. Surprised other posters haven't seen it!

My DM did them for xmas presents for my dds.

BeaLola · 20/03/2026 16:35

Definitely let her choose - I love them- I had my very ancient rucksack corners repaired FOC via Regent Street store - customer service was exemplary

Please check your school policy first as these types of bags are banned at my children’s school.

Rucksacks only!!!

Banned here too thankfully.

SaucepanRattle · 20/03/2026 16:41

DD13 has this after pleading for it for Christmas and DH doing some research with the girls at the school he teaches at. It's really sturdy but when it arrives it looks super small till you open it out! (Large one fits folders etc)

JuliettaCaeser · 20/03/2026 16:44

Dd 17 is a trendsetter she found a large mulberry bag in a charity shop and has ditched her longchamp for that. Not sure if it’s genuine or not but looks it.

Picoloangel · 20/03/2026 16:50

My DD has the navy large Pliage. They do hold quite a lot. I have an old one and we trialled that first!

loveawineloveacrisp · 20/03/2026 17:02

Why are schools banning them?!!

The girls are " wearing" these bags to school?

Its what 'people' say now about bags/handbags!

ChangePlease · 20/03/2026 11:36

Oh no are these school bags now?? Does this mean they are no longer a choice for the style conscious adult? Help I have two and use them to death! do I need to consign them to the back of the wardrobe?

(Lighthearted in case not obvious)

I love them but they were school bags in 2005-2008 as well 😂

I wash my Pilage bags, when they get grubby, on a short wash in the washing machine. I use non bio powder and no conditioner. The leather has always been fine.

I just sponge mine down, I agree, been absolutely fine.

If she's carrying anything heavy in it, I'd be concerned about shoulder strain. I would recommend a rucksack for her laptop!

Have you ever seen a teen wearing a rucksack as a rucksack? On both shoulders?

EdinburghGlasgowEdinburgh · 20/03/2026 17:23

They're good, hard wearing bags, and even better with the liner / organiser. Really recommend looking on vinted for colour / size your DD wants if the price seems steep. That's what we did, which was a great "compromise" and lesson in sustainability and not splurging over £100 when you don't need to. (But, obviously, check seller ratings etc so you don't get scammed.)

JuliettaCaeser · 20/03/2026 18:11

No fashion concious teen will be seen dead with a small ruck sack. Ours won’t even take them on flights etc. it’s really annoying actually!

I’m getting my 11 year old one next September when she starts secondary school. I noticed today (affluent area) that loads of girls have them - actually lost count. Most had blue or black and I’d say from looking they were genuine.

Does seem slightly excessive, £125 for a school bag, but I have one daughter and always wanted to be the girl who had all the gear when I was her age. Lucky for her I am nurturing my inner child by living vicariously through her 🫢

Epli · 20/03/2026 15:15

I think we are missing the 'buy her 20p Tesco plastic shopping back and put £124.80 into the savings account instead' post in order to complete the usual bag thread pointless advice bingo.

Yep all those people commenting about getting a £5 one at the market.
DD had hers all through school and onto uni.
I have several that we use for travel.
I don't think they look particularly fashionable.
They are just bloody hard wearing.
It saves the buy cheap by twice 😉

FourForksSake · 20/03/2026 18:55

DD has a dark grey one that she selected in the Regent Street store about 7-8 years ago as her school bag. It was £85 then and worth every penny as she still uses frequently at uni and when travelling. My black one is ancient and was my work bag for years until lockdown and WFH.

Branded shopping bags were all the rage when I was at school. 😃

For me too. Especially Miss Selfridge or TopShop.

I was just thinking this! I just treated myself to a dark brown one and I love it. I didn’t realise it was the school bag of choice for teenagers!

ReyRey12 · 20/03/2026 19:07

These have made a comeback? This was all the rage in my school in 2006

CountryMouse22 · 20/03/2026 19:18

This is a mad price for a school bag!

Member968405 · 20/03/2026 19:25

These make me laugh - I remember when every old lady had an identical bag to take to the market. A nylon hold-all that folded down into a little leather purse.

msmillicentcat · 20/03/2026 19:34

I love mine, I have the burgundy coloured one with burgundy leather straps. It's so useful, comes on flights and trips with me all the time. I don't think they are the rage at my daughter's school thankfully otherwise I would probably have lost mine to my teen by now.

MaidOfSteel · 20/03/2026 20:10

StationJack · 20/03/2026 11:00

£125 for a school bag! The world's gone mad.

Glad I’m not alone in being shocked!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 20/03/2026 20:17

Meh, £125 for a main birthday present- one that is something that can be used for years - isn’t all that excessive.

My DCs use rucksacks for school, but I’ve got a large Longchamp that I’ve used to carry books/laptop, beach towels, and a variety of things for over 10 years, and still looks ok. Cost per use, I reckon im better off having bought that bag than a cheaper dupe that would fall apart.

corblimeyguvnr · 20/03/2026 20:20

loveawineloveacrisp · 20/03/2026 17:02

Why are schools banning them?!!

Possibly because they flop all over the floor as they lack structure or it could be because of the competitiveness they create ? Uniform is supposed to create an equal environment but sending them in with " fashionable " bags works against that.
