School bag Longchamp

I am looking to surprise dd with a Longchamp bag for her birthday. She likes the navy, paper and black colours.

But which is the style that all the girls are wearing to school?

Is it this: Le Pliage Original Large Shoulder Bag
https://www.johnlewis.com/longchamp-le-pliage-original-large-shoulder-bag/black/p5051141?gad_campaignid=20158965733&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD2el1xjO7bxkKRJ6yqwM7ityjWPI&gclid=Cj0KCQjw4PPNBhD8ARIsAMo-iczwYKcXCwun-dVEfNsaTdW4i49m_b6JP5jda-YRCYJNvGrWqNy1HdkaAlFJEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&s_ppc=2dx_mixed_fashion_BAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2

Or the medium sized one?

I know it's got long straps so can be worn as a shoulder bag.

Please help.

My issue with that bag (and many others) is that it’s nylon and I have sensory problems around that.. shame because it sounds like a useful bag. The teens round my way don’t seem to carry them.
I remember when I was at school (early 90s) drawstring Benetton bags were a thing, mine was pale pink. I didn’t really like the material tho.

Yes, the Benetton duffel bag! Hugely popular at my school in the late 80s and early 90s, along with leather Head holdalls which came in every colour combo imaginable.

😄

now I actually like the sock thing!

though you forget doc martens- they were sensible AND fashionable. My mother who spent her life in stilletos was horrified at my ‘orthopaedic shoes’

I think it’s always going to be bizarre when the things we thought were awful become fashionable.

The one thing I don’t miss from the 90’s is having no hips or bum as a woman, so when the big bum thing became a ‘thing’ I couldn’t be happier! ( though judging by the Oscars, we’re all supposed to be underweight and super skinny again 😢)

doesnt make sense otherwise!

Crikey we’re in an affluent area but £125 for a kids bag? Those bag look like a bag someone my age (40s) would have! Anyway…it’s all black backpacks here. Nike or my daughter has a different brand. A lot of them walk to school so a bag like that isn’t practical.

I remember the days when Jane Norman carrier bags were all the rage!

Trallala · 21/03/2026 22:31

I've got a large black one (with black leather) and I've happily carried power tools in it, so can confirm they're very sturdy and clean up well if they get grubby

Am I the only one who doesn’t get the love for these bags? I just think they are frumpy looking. Plain but not elegant.

I agree. Very boring looking!

Yes, but teenage girls want the real thing!

Round here it’s definitely the bag of choice.

Deffo the bag of choice here too. Large Pliage & a green, navy or black one. Wears well, fits loads & DD has 2.
i want the black one that zips in pro a tier of extra large 😀😀

I know some people are moaning about the price of Longchamps: but my black one has been in constant use for nearly 10 years: so worth every penny

Ninerainbows · 22/03/2026 08:07

When I was at school everyone had the Head St Tropez with the zip-off end which was £40. In 1990 £40 is equivalent in purchasing power to £100 if you plug it into an inflation calculator.

My DD has the large black one for school and it fits everything in it- PE kit, lunch and all books. I have a navy one and it comfortable fits my laptop, few books and I also have an organiser inside (which I recommend) for phone, airpods, lipstick, keys etc. They’re great bags.

NewDogOwner · 22/03/2026 09:06

This would be a terrible school bag. Have you ever lifted a school bag? Far too much weight for those straps on one shoulder.

1Latte · 22/03/2026 09:23

I hate to say it but my dd has had this bag since starting senior school. She is in year 7 and about 30% of girls have this exact bag, all in navy. They don't carry around laptops but iPads, which are less bulky. I'd much rather she used a sensible rucksack but the peer pressur at her all girls school is hideous.

While correct, and I’m still holding the line of a rucksack for dd, if the OPs dd is going to take a tote bag anyway, this style isn’t all that bad. Obviously a rucksack is better, but from the thread discussion about the importance of having the right bag in the 90s/00s - it’s pretty clear the refusal to use a sensible rucksack is hardly a new thing !

..zips into an XL. (Auto corrected)
it’s the expandable travel Pliage.

Thanks - I couldn't work it out!

damelza · 22/03/2026 12:08

I'd use one if it had an optional cross body strap - handy to be hands free sometimes! Otherwise I think they are overrated and impractical.

On the other hand there are so many others out there that fold down to nothing like these I could choose, but I suppose they are "Le Plagiarism".

10 years? This is for a teenager. It will probably be deemed an out of date granny bag by next year.

tobysmouse · 22/03/2026 12:38

Interesting that loads of people are saying they are really hardwearing - DD says she sees loads of girls at her school with the corners of their folders poking through the material so didn't think they were really that good quality for the price, but these ones could be the fakes of course!

They are the bag of choice here as well. When I was in 6th Form everyone had a pleather large black messenger back from Next, lower down the school we all had army surplus knapsacks covered in tippex, I got bonus points as mine was actually air force surplus.

Quite possibly, but they have been fashionable amongst teens for 5+ years, and if not used as a school bag, really works well as a gym bag, a holiday tote etc. frankly, mum can start using it if it gets abandoned after a couple of years, at which point it will still be perfectly serviceable.

Plus, it’s her birthday present- how long do you expect a birthday gift to still be popular and how much use do you expect it to get? It’s a lot of money to spend on a school bag if you are buying the school bag additionally to any other birthday/Christmas gift- it’s not really a lot of money to spend on a teens main birthday present.

But really bloody good as an every day work bag. I get loads of stuff in it and can sling it about without worrying about it as it wasn’t expensive. Also, I find them really comfortable to carry - it sits really well on my shoulder.

I agree it’s not the most ‘exciting’ or stylish of bags but I have others for that need.

InterIgnis · 22/03/2026 15:48

I had one at her age for school over 20 years ago now. The pliage is a classic.

Mine is still being used, too.

Yes I can see that for an adult. Just seem odd for a teen!

I was more fashionable in the 90s as have slim hips and smallish bum......but wish I had a booty! 😂
