Sloppy French oversized cardigan?

OneWorthyLemonCat · 26/02/2026 21:45

I'm going to be spending the summer in France.
I have a good capsule wardrobe, but want to add one item - a big, oversized, sloppy French style cardigan. Maybe in tan? I'll wear it over jeans, a cropped tshirt, and either Sambas or Espadrilles, with big sunglasses.
Has anyone seen anything that fits the bill?

People still feeding trolls here?

Seriously, why bother?

Report. Or ignore.

You probably need to search for something like ‘light knit cardigan’ or a linen cardigan. Try La Redoute. If the weather is warm but not too hot, a nice linen shirt open over a tshirt always looks good on all ages I think. You can get all different lengths.

Breaking news!
There has been a shock late entrant into the running this morning.
I've just bought this (in gray) for £21!: https://www.abercrombie.com/shop/uk/p/dad-v-neck-cardigan-62240399-1005?faceout=life&seq=03&pagefm=navigation-grid&prodvm=navigation-grid
The quality looks crap, but I'll only be throwing it on for an hour or so of an evening if it's chilly, so won't be washing it very often at all. I love the look of it on the website, so fingers crossed.

You’ve sold me a vision @OneWorthyLemonCat and now I, who had no previous interest in French oversized cardigans, also want to buy one 😭

They are pretty oversized. I’m a size 8 and take an xxs. I’m 5 ft 4 so I don’t like things too big.. Some people would go a bit more over .But probably worth going 1 size below what you would normally wear

Thank you

this is lovely if it’s that price point you’re after ?

Thats lovely! The ability to spend several months in France comes from having quit my job! So I'm happier with the £21 I've just spent - but this would be my usual price point 😬

Yes , I have some from Pure bought over the years which last years , and equally have TU from Sainsbury’s chunky cardi or M&S cloud yarn is good .

Now im wondering whether somewhere on a french forum there are french women planning an autumn trip to england and wondering where they can get tweed twinsets and tailored macs 😂

I’m not sure and happy to be corrected… but weren’t the classic tweed twinsets by Coco Chanel? It’s a style I love anyway but have never worn.
I love the shapes of a lot of the cardigans posted here and am really taken with the cocoon style a few pages back which reminds me of my art student days 🥰

Wouldn't that just be SO hilarious! I'm currently struggling to think of anything funnier. With lots of French women acting terribly confused about what on earth they mean, and the poster being talked out of the entire trip for fear of appearing 'contrived'.
Oh how we laughed!

Funniest thing of all, I am very English in appearance. To the chagrin of MNet, I wear White Stuff, Seasalt, Boden frocks, a bit of M&S and love a Kettlewell top and cotton cardigan. I also spend lengthy periods of the summer in Southern France where we have a home and where I am regularly stopped by French people seeking directions. I make no attempt whatsoever to be stylishly French, whatever that is, but the French often assume I'm French.

OneWorthyLemonCat · 28/02/2026 11:32

In my cardigan trawl, I found these two, which I'm very taken with, but they are too niche and wouldnt work with enough of the rest of my clothes:

I’m seriously considering the red Oliver Bonas cardigan.

Great thread!

Just chill. Be relaxed. No one cares what you wear.

Um, you're in the style section of Mumsnet!

Heatedrival · 27/02/2026 07:04

It’s so strange here now. A woman just wants a cardigan - you know in case it turns chilly. How odd do you have to be to reply to her that she can’t have one?! I mean WTF?!

Precisely - the only crime worse would be wearing a dry robe to keep warm and dry, and talking about it on Mumsnet.

mynameiscalypso · 26/02/2026 22:12

This is S&B. The whole point is to get overly invested what cardigan a total stranger should wear on holiday in a couple of months.

Love this answer!!! I seem to be spending my life on S&B advising people I have never met (& will never meet!) on exactly what to wear, down to their smalls. WTF is wrong with me?!!!

EleanorMc67 · 01/03/2026 01:38

That's gorgeous. I wish I suited beige ...

EleanorMc67 · 01/03/2026 01:46

Hmmm. Looked at this & noticed straight away that there are no composition details etc, so suspected it was one of the many cheap usually Chinese* companies that aren't much better than Shein & the like. Sure enough, they're registered in the Netherlands, but products come from China & the reviews are dreadful.

*There are lots of brilliant clothes manufactured in China too. I doubt this website stocks them.

EleanorMc67 · 01/03/2026 01:47

Nitgel · 26/02/2026 22:13

Thanks for that - much nicer in the black IMO & in the sale so I think I might just have to order it ...!

Februarysiceandsleet · 01/03/2026 02:18

Thank you, OP. I’d never thought of looking in M&S men’s section for cardigans. There’s also this one which I’m tempted by, but navy for me. Sloppy if you buy a bigger size. It has pockets.
£67.50, 70% lambs wool, 30% cashmere.

Since this is S&B, if there are knitters reading let me show you this cardigan on the La Fetiche site. Knitted by Di Gilpin, finished in Scotland, £1600. Scroll down and read the ‘Discover the Process’ section.

It was the hand knitted bag, £360, that drew my attention first.

I think I could make either of those by the summer.

Edit: by ‘hand finished’ La Fetiche may mean the blanket stitch around the edges of the cardigan and the hand-embroidered label.

I've greatly enjoyed this thread, for all the wrong reasons - so thanks OP!

However ... I must admit that, after all the gorgeous (& not all expensive) cardigans that were suggested, you bought a grey polyester one ...!!! And yes, you said £21 was more your budget - but the men's lambswool M&S one that you were going to buy is also in grey & now down to £24.50!!!

Only 50% lambswool mind you - but still 50% more woolly goodness than the one you bought ...

Yes it’s probably not great (and cheap). I’m not endorsing them, it just popped up when I searched and looked like what op was describing.
