Sloppy French oversized cardigan?

OneWorthyLemonCat · 26/02/2026 21:45

I'm going to be spending the summer in France.
I have a good capsule wardrobe, but want to add one item - a big, oversized, sloppy French style cardigan. Maybe in tan? I'll wear it over jeans, a cropped tshirt, and either Sambas or Espadrilles, with big sunglasses.
Has anyone seen anything that fits the bill?

Not quite sure of the point you’re making about La Fetiche, @Februarysiceandsleet?

(It’s so odd, given the countless perfectly affordable - to people who buy Sezanne or Reiss - and fairly plain jumpers they offer, that posters coming upon them here race to excoriate the standout pieces that naturally cost a good deal more.)

Almost all their knitwear is not just ‘finished’ but made in Scotland. Every single piece I have from them, from beanies, to jumpers, to tailored garments, exceeds expectations - and, given that I expect to have each piece for the rest of my life, they could be said to be underpriced.

I have no connection to them whatsoever, but the invariable attacks on craft and artistry on a Style & Beauty board are increasingly tedious.

The OP has a whole thread talking about knitwear, but has chosen something containing no wool at all. And yet it’s real knitwear that attracts the scoffing here?

I've greatly enjoyed this thread, for all the wrong reasons - so thanks OP!

However ... I must admit that, after all the gorgeous (& not all expensive) cardigans that were suggested, you bought a grey polyester one ...!!! And yes, you said £21 was more your budget - but the men's lambswool M&S one that you were going to buy is also in grey & now down to £24.50!!!

Only 50% lambswool mind you - but still 50% more woolly goodness than the one you bought ...

https://www.marksandspencer.com/lambswool-blend-v-neck-cardigan/p/clp60745598

The reviews were poor and people say it loses its shape and starts to mat after 1 wear. I'm sure the same is true for the one I bought too, but there aren't any reviews to confirm it!

I quite like some of the cardigans posted but I do wish shops would show pictures of them not on the model or the model just standing up straight so I can see them properly. A cardigan on some skinny model where she is holding it bunched up or half tucked in or sat down in some weird position is not displaying the cardigan in a way that makes me want to buy as I can't see it properly. I'm tall so like to see the length properly and the model height is useful to know.

RedRiverShore6 · 01/03/2026 07:38

At least you can see the one you bought properly, OP and the model's height and size is there, also lots of good reviews

TheApocalypticiansApprentice · 01/03/2026 07:55

The brand I’ve just been talking about provides product photos, and photos and video of the garment on a model standing straight. Also size guidance with measurements, and the size and height of the model. All of that is incorporated into a brand’s costs, I assume?

Edited

I've chosen something containing no wool, costing £21, because - as of very recently - I have no job. I would normally buy better quality.

Breaking news!
There has been a shock late entrant into the running this morning.
I've just bought this (in gray) for £21!: https://www.abercrombie.com/shop/uk/p/dad-v-neck-cardigan-62240399-1005?faceout=life&seq=03&pagefm=navigation-grid&prodvm=navigation-grid
The quality looks crap, but I'll only be throwing it on for an hour or so of an evening if it's chilly, so won't be washing it very often at all. I love the look of it on the website, so fingers crossed.

Edited

Why spend £21 on something when you say the quality looks crap? I don’t get it. Unless I was absolutely desperate I wouldn’t spend that sort of money on something that looks crap. You could get the same in primark for half the price. Or double the quality on Vinted or eBay for the same price or even a fraction of the price in charity shops.
i understand why you didn’t want Sezanne prices etc but what a bizarre way to round up the thread, all those posts to end up with something that you say looks like it’s crap.
make it make sense!

I like the shape and only need to please myself.

Exactly, well done for finding something you like on a budget OP.

OneWorthyLemonCat · 01/03/2026 09:45

I hadn't appreciated the complex rules associated with the Style and Beauty board. You MUST as a first port of call buy natural fibres at a high price point. As a desperate plan B, you are permitted to buy cheap, but then it must be VERY cheap and only come from Primark. Noted.

Thank you, OP. I’d never thought of looking in M&S men’s section for cardigans. There’s also this one which I’m tempted by, but navy for me. Sloppy if you buy a bigger size. It has pockets.
£67.50, 70% lambs wool, 30% cashmere.

Since this is S&B, if there are knitters reading let me show you this cardigan on the La Fetiche site. Knitted by Di Gilpin, finished in Scotland, £1600. Scroll down and read the ‘Discover the Process’ section.

It was the hand knitted bag, £360, that drew my attention first.

I think I could make either of those by the summer.

Edit: by ‘hand finished’ La Fetiche may mean the blanket stitch around the edges of the cardigan and the hand-embroidered label.

Edited

That bag does look very simple to knit! The price of it is eye watering.
Edit to add: I knit, I weave. I appreciate crafts and am the first to point out what’s involved when items are hand knitted, woven or spun with beautiful quality materials. I’m stating that this bag is very expensive and it surprised me.

looknon the Sezane website. Some lovely cardigans there

I love this on butter yellow. Does anyone have it? Is it itchy?

SinicalMe · 01/03/2026 11:23

Going forward Op, and a message to people who post on S&B stating a budget upfront should be mandatory.

@OneWorthyLemonCat if you had said in your op that your budget was under £30 then posters can look for something in your budget but instead you got Sézane, La Fetiche and pricy brands recommended to you.

I’m glad you found your cardigan but please next time give an approximate budget so you’re not wasting people’s time.

A word of caution about bray and bloom and their ilk. Read the reviews a lot of these websites are selling nasty cheap shite , the lovely marketing is deceptive

I didn't investigate, but I did think the pic looked generic / AI-generated, albeit a bit classier than most.

Why?
That's such an odd request to me!
I had no budget in mind when I started the thread.
I'll continue to start threads on any topic I choose!
Lots of people on this thread have enjoyed the suggestions others have made, across all price points.

This is S&B. The cardigan, bag and hat are deliberately designed to look as they do. I was drawing craft people’s attention to that style as an example of something unusual.

Di Gilpin , who is credited as having made it, is an excellent knitter, Her website shows many beautifully made hand knitted items for sale, including this lambswool jumper for less than £500.

The La Fetiche cardigan looks inside-out so we’re seeing what’s usually the wrong side of the work, some of the yarn ends are not woven in, the blanket stitch embroidery is uneven, and the cast-on tails for the sleeves dangle by each cuff, as do the cast-off tails at the neck. That’s the designer’s decision.

The cardigan on the model in the video may show something else intriguing. How has the stylist managed to button the front halfway down but off-centre in a place where there isn’t a button?

The presentation of the finished cardigan is a style choice, it’s a designer piece. It’s interesting to knitters who may use it as inspiration in a similar way as they see the cardigans by Hope Macauley on The Traitors.

Me too, especially as I wear a cross body handbag

@OneWorthyLemonCat @PropertyD Oh I thought it was just me that had the pilling issue, no matter the material. I also wear a cross body leather bag that’s good quality so I’m surprised it happens. I’ve even pilled a nice cashmere sweater! 🫣🥴

Me too. I bought a cashmere comb to remove bobbles and it works very well.

Unfortunately, @Februarysiceandsleet your previous post gave the impression you were attacking the brand for the expense of the products.

You may have missed my posts here. I’m familiar with La Fetiche as I own several pieces and have been buying from them almost since they opened. (So I don’t personally need a lecture on them - though it may be of use to the innumerable naysayers here.)

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 01/03/2026 16:08

I'd buy a men's cardigans, or raid DH's wardrobe.

You’re being disingenuous.
My point was: you asked a very specific question, presumably (by the wording of your op) because you have the impression that French people dress a certain way and you seemed to be asking for a cardigan which has a little je ne sais quois, or ‘Frenchness’
usually when talking about this perceived frenchness , we are talking about quality as well as style.
you were keen on the Sezanne cardies and seem to appreciate quality, then at the end you come up with a cardigan which in your words ‘looks crap quality’
my response was that if you’re going for something that looks a bit crap quality, why not go for something even cheaper so it doesn’t matter if the quality is crappy, or better still, for quality and the environment, rather than buying something that looks crappy quality, why not spend the same money on something second hand that made to last.
its not complex rules of mumsnet style and beauty, its just questioning your logic, you’re not going to be going there for a while, you had time and clearly budget to shop around for something a little less generic, mass produced and grey that you think is ‘crappy quality’
had you said initially that you have given up work to fund this trip, or whatever it is you said, I’m sure people would have enjoyed the challenge of finding something you can actually afford and will love.
whatever , you have something now so at least you’re sorted
.
