Sloppy French oversized cardigan?

OneWorthyLemonCat · 26/02/2026 21:45

I'm going to be spending the summer in France.
I have a good capsule wardrobe, but want to add one item - a big, oversized, sloppy French style cardigan. Maybe in tan? I'll wear it over jeans, a cropped tshirt, and either Sambas or Espadrilles, with big sunglasses.
Has anyone seen anything that fits the bill?

I did underline or pre-owned, @OneWorthyLemonCat! 😄

BIossomtoes · 27/02/2026 07:56

I’ve got this one and it’s barely been off my back all winter. It’s incredibly light, like wearing a cloud.

For a perfectly plain ‘traditional men’s cardigan’ look I highly recommend

Community Clothing

(Whether from the men’s or women’s section is up to you.)

I would get one when you are out there. Buying one from Sezane will cost a lot more than going to the little independent boutiques they tend to have in every town (and while there you may also find a blouse/dress/pretty little jacket etc)

Depending on where going (I don’t know the Loire that well) you may not get lucky. One spring I went to France to my parents holiday home there (Charente maritime) had to pick up jeans and tops as I only had summer stuff I got some stuff but it was from a retail park shop. There was a Zara in La Rochelle but I honestly didn’t notice that many boutiques there (and we went there for years!). Having said that I did occasionally find some nice bits in E Leclerc. Intermarche do clothes but a bit boring.

I do! And I'll be relaxed whether I find my cardigan or not 😅

Watching with interest. I have a cardigan with this kind of slouch and colour from tiktok shop that I sleep in 😀it is the queen of cardigans.
Id love a smart version I can go out in.

I have a house in the north- lots of particularly good boutiques in Montreuil, Le Touquet, Boulogne, Hesdin, Arras and Lille. I agree other regions may vary!

fruitbrewhaha · 27/02/2026 08:14

La Redoute is a good place to try too.

DelinquentSnails · 27/02/2026 08:18

Honestly, what a miserable bugger you would have to be to send a snarky reply to a woman posting on a fashion board looking for a cardigan 😆

OP- If you’re in the Loire (lucky you, it is gorgeous), a cardigan to throw over outfits as a great idea as it can be quite chilly from my memory and you will probably want to be eating outside in the evenings.

There are some lovely recommendations on here but if you would like cashmere, I have this and it’s really nice https://www.poetryfashion.co.uk/product-RL53-POEKC/colour-a-latte/cardigans/cashmere-cocoon-cardigan.htm?Media=CMDBG092&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=1720217160&gbraid=0AAAAAD_X_Jw9pYL7vliDjdry7tP9amMYm&gclid=CjwKCAiAnoXNBhAZEiwAnItcG6bHhRPLBdVJyh96R9YHSaflOqiYyDjNJMkTBB4951gYQoyFdAAiaBoCnhAQAvD_BwE

I am quite envious, as the part of France we frequent is very much more Decathalon fleece and walking sandals territory!

I am taking DS 14 for a few days in Paris at Easter both to practise my French and for the specific purpose of wearing nice clothes. Maybe I’ll get a French cardigan just to pee off some miserable English women.

Maybe try M&S. I always buy the old mens style lambswool cardigans in med, they can be worn with a sort of half tuck or straight and they wash well. I bought a marino one too which is super soft.

Thanks, good idea. Thats the vibe I've got in mind!

I am utterly bemused by the cuntiness on this thread. This sort of stuff is exactly what style and beauty is all about. I see someone has already posted my idea, the cappuccine cardigan from palome

(shorts and flip flops my arse)

Menopants · 27/02/2026 08:44

A word of caution about bray and bloom and their ilk. Read the reviews a lot of these websites are selling nasty cheap shite , the lovely marketing is deceptive

DivorcedButHappyNow · 27/02/2026 08:48

One of the best things about France is Montprix!

OVienna · 27/02/2026 08:49

Good to know! I had never heard of them.

TheApocalypticiansApprentice · 27/02/2026 08:51

@OVienna You really, really don’t need a cardigan (from what appears to be a lighting brand) from a site that very carefully omits the fabric content of the garment.

Seriously …

Glad a pp has also noted the very clear dodginess!

OVienna · 27/02/2026 08:55

I do need a bit of cheering up today though (no joke).

Heatedrival · 27/02/2026 08:56

@goz Don’t be mean then.

OneWorthyLemonCat · 27/02/2026 08:58

I think I'm going to give this one a go, for £24! I'll buy it in Small: https://www.marksandspencer.com/lambswool-blend-v-neck-cardigan/p/clp60745598?color=MULTI%2FNEUTRAL&_gl=1gl5kfp_upMQ.._gs*MQ..&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIqd_D3KD5kgMVbqJQBh242y13EAQYASABEgLbHPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Trying to buy a ‘French style’ cardigan because you’re going to France is so contrived.

I dont mind if its contrived. Who cares? Do you know what's going to make you really angry? I'll wear it with a Breton tshirt too! Get your pitchfork at the ready....

But it’s 50% polyamide! (In an ugly fleck colourway …)

Are you sure, @OneWorthyLemonCat?
