Sloppy French oversized cardigan?

OneWorthyLemonCat · 26/02/2026 21:45

I'm going to be spending the summer in France.
I have a good capsule wardrobe, but want to add one item - a big, oversized, sloppy French style cardigan. Maybe in tan? I'll wear it over jeans, a cropped tshirt, and either Sambas or Espadrilles, with big sunglasses.
Has anyone seen anything that fits the bill?

Just chill. Be relaxed. No one cares what you wear.

I do! And I'll be relaxed whether I find my cardigan or not 😅

Thank you, there are some lovely ones here 😊

Vintage. By French cardigan do you mean the sort of heritage / classic with gold buttons sort of thing. Slightly long cut / oversized? Normally tan or navy blue.

If yes search on vinted or eBay for ‘vintage gold button cardigan’ . Other keywords you could use nautical vintage cardigan / granny chic button cardigan
have a nice hol! Xo

I hadn't thought about vintage gold buttons, but now you've put that in my mind, it sounds wonderful!

Trying to buy a ‘French style’ cardigan because you’re going to France is so contrived.

Heatedrival · 27/02/2026 07:04

It’s so strange here now. A woman just wants a cardigan - you know in case it turns chilly. How odd do you have to be to reply to her that she can’t have one?! I mean WTF?!

Heatedrival · 27/02/2026 07:09

@goz
I’m going to buy a French style cardigan now just to upset you. I’m going to book a holiday in France and wear my cardigan and hope I bump into you so I can offend you with my wearing of said cardigan.
I might even wear a Breton t-shirt.

Then when I get home I’m going to continue to wear the cardigan and tell everyone it’s French style simply to annoy people like you.

Heatedrival · 27/02/2026 07:12

Now I have to go onto the other threads and tell everyone they can’t have the things they want or do the things they want because they are all ‘contrived.’
Then I’m going to the shops to continue my mission to stop people and tell them NO CARDIGANS FOR YOU! NO!
@goz

hi OP

have you looked at American vintage ?
their outlet section has lots of knitwear at the moment and sometimes you can pick it up on Vinted etc too .

bellerose also have lovely knitwear for that spring summer feel

and the label FRNCH

good luck

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 27/02/2026 07:16

@Kittylala and @goz - Does being unpleasant enhance your day somehow?

stnvcfo · 27/02/2026 07:21

A slightly different tack (and cheaper than Sezane, whose cardigans are very nice and very French) is to go to a massive Auchan when there and pick one up - they’re usually pretty good quality and fairly reasonable. Profitez!

goz · 27/02/2026 07:34

@Heatedrivalno need to repeatedly tag me ✌️

Trying to buy a ‘French style’ cardigan because you’re going to France is so contrived.

Calling harmless excitement ‘contrived’ feels more performative than wanting a cardi.

Great minds eh?!

Oh now I want that in every colour ....

Just ordered the taupe one. Thank you.

@OneWorthyLemonCat FWIW M&S had some very nice cardigans in yesterday - perhaps not tan. I have a home in France - just wear what you feel comfortable in.

Have a lovely holiday. The Loire is fab.

Feeding trolls is a waste of energy. Report, report, report …

American Vintage is a great suggestion - particularly paired with one of their t shirts. (French brand, which somehow looks most chic in the south of France.)

Also (whether fresh off their sites, or pre-owned):

La Fetiche (half French / half Scottish, breathtaking craft and invention).

Alexandra Golovanoff (impossible to describe the chic-ness).

OneWorthyLemonCat · 27/02/2026 07:45

I'm so confused by the posters telling me not to worry about it, or to wear what I'll feel comfortable in, like I'm full of angst about this cardigan!
I just fancy an oversized cardigan, it's not that deep!

This one is exactly what I mean! I dont know why I didnt think of Sezanne to start with, I love the brand.

Op, what about something in a cotton linen mix? I don't have links, but this is the fabric I would look for personally for late spring.

(and what an innocent thread topic to have attracted such odd "bobbling", as I'll now refer to the weird posts!)

Ophy83 · 27/02/2026 07:49

I would get one when you are out there. Buying one from Sezane will cost a lot more than going to the little independent boutiques they tend to have in every town (and while there you may also find a blouse/dress/pretty little jacket etc)

Maybe try M&S. I always buy the old mens style lambswool cardigans in med, they can be worn with a sort of half tuck or straight and they wash well. I bought a marino one too which is super soft.
