Sloppy French oversized cardigan?

OneWorthyLemonCat · 26/02/2026 21:45

I'm going to be spending the summer in France.
I have a good capsule wardrobe, but want to add one item - a big, oversized, sloppy French style cardigan. Maybe in tan? I'll wear it over jeans, a cropped tshirt, and either Sambas or Espadrilles, with big sunglasses.
Has anyone seen anything that fits the bill?

I have a fabulous brown, sloppy, chunky knit cardigan from Whistles. And it was reduced to £75 in John Lewis last week.

Ps) I don’t know why you’ve got some shitty replies. You’re entitled to ask about a cardigan 😂

Maybe The shitty replies come from farage supporters who are smarting after yesterdays by election result!

Blimey that's gorgeous and 50% lambswool! Well done @OneWorthyLemonCat . I'm tempted...
So many lovely cardigans on this thread. 😍
And a few mystifying people who think telling people buying a cardigan is somehow an unworthy activity is a way to spend their time. 🙄

I would look at Sezane! Try Vinted

Just chill. Be relaxed. No one cares what you wear.

I diagree. Have you seen how chic French women are. I love the idea of an oversized cardigan btw

https://babaa.es/shop/women/cardigans/cardigan-woman-no17-alga/ - expenny but worth every penny.

I live about as far south as you can go in the Loire. It’s been 20 degrees the past four days (today’s a blip). Our weather is as temperamental as the UK but it can get incredibly hot in the summer. I’d try COS, M&S or Uniqlo for merino cardigans. I also wear those lightweight poncho type things you see in the White Company and Jigsaw.

It’s usually too warm for jeans in May, but we do get some very disappointing rain then!

Trying to buy a ‘French style’ cardigan because you’re going to France is so contrived.

Oh, do calm the fuck down. It's just a figure of speech. It's not like she's proposing to wear a beret and Breton top and stick a baguette under her arm.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 27/02/2026 10:45

I love this but when I clicked it I see the material is "Material: Soft and warm fabric"....makes me dubious they aren't saying what it is made of!

Also the company only has 2 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot...

🙅

There has been so much of this on mumsnet recently people being attacked for posting for no good reason.

What about this one (new with tags)

Hahaha you mean me! Seriously just be comfy.

An over-sized sloppy cardigan IS comfy! It’s the definition of comfy.

Gettingbysomehow · 27/02/2026 12:00

One of my relatives is french and she makes me look like a fat slob. I am neither fat nor a slob. I think its just something they are brought up to do.

Those Sezane ones are beautiful and just on the right side of slightly cropped and oversized too. I feel like they have a slightly more chic edge than some others.

Can anyone advise - how accurate is their sizing? Although another good thing while they charge shipping returns are free.

MrsMitford3 · 27/02/2026 12:06

@OneWorthyLemonCat would you clarify what you mean by oversized?

Cropped and big or longer? I like this one but so many ppl posing what I would not consider over sized at all

A close friend of mine is French (living in UK), what I notice is she chooses what she wears carefully. Not all French are well dressed though, we have a family friend whose choices in fashion were a bit questionable (patent padded jacket) but she’s better now. In fact when she was younger she had an amazing body. Another French friend living here looks great but she’s a real gym bunny.

They are pretty oversized. I’m a size 8 and take an xxs. I’m 5 ft 4 so I don’t like things too big.. Some people would go a bit more over .But probably worth going 1 size below what you would normally wear

Aluna · 27/02/2026 13:52

La Redoute always have these.

OneWorthyLemonCat · 27/02/2026 14:26

Bugger, I thought I could get away with buying something cheap, but I can't get the Sezanne one out of my head!

I dunno, I think you should wait until you're there, and browse all the lovely stores, bound to be plenty esp in Bordeaux. Then you'll have an AUTHENTIC French cardi!

FWIW I got some lovely stuff, dresses, trousers, t shirts etc. in the clothing section of Auchan last September. They were clearing out the Summer stuff. All gorgeous fabrics and cost half nothing. I'm not into labels..... obviously but I like decent non polyester fabric.
