Estée Lauder Double Wear has changed formula 😭

Was just about to order replacement bottles last night when "get a free beauty blender when you purchase the new Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation" caught my eye.

Sure enough, new bottle, new formula. After some googling, it seems the second ingredient in the foundation has now been banned from sale in Europe. I've just been to the Estee Lauder counter to get some samples of the new formula (I mix 2 different colours) so we'll see how the new formula holds up on my oily skin.

Anyone found anything equal to or better that Double Wear for oily skin? I like a full coverage look, and need something that won't disappear on my oily nose like cheaper foundations do! I'm not hopeful about this new formula, the sales assistant told me if I use a brush and stipple it on I will get better coverage, but if I need more I can "set it" with their Double Wear Veil powder (for £41!) Apparently the ingredients that has been banned is what makes the foundation stay on so long which is one of the reasons I love it 😥

Oh, and to top it all off, the old DW pumps do not fit the new DW bottles 😡

I got shade matched in store today and I’m a whole shade darker but lighter on the intensity, still a warm, so I was Cashew 3w2 and I’m now Honey Bronze 4w1. I bought the new pump too and the Estée Lauder lady gave me a sponge, I did also buy one of the new coloured lip balms which are gorgeous, in shade raspberry.

Lipbalms you say....? 👀 I love a lip balm, though I don't NEED a new lipbalm right now. I'm afraid if I go and look it will be on my mind until I cave and get one!!

Anyone wondering why it’s been reformulated, it’s because one of the ingredients has been banned by the EU.

Oh, interesting….

I have been using DW for over 30 years so am really hoping the new formula isn't too dissimilar. I bounce between 3 different shades depending on the time of year and thankfully have unopened bottles of 2 of these. I went into both Boots & M&S last night to get testers of the shade I'm currently wearing and have no back-up bottles of so trying it out today. Application wise it seemed as thick as the old DW. Need to pop to the loo to see how it's wearing!

minipie · 10/02/2026 11:08

Just popping on to recommend Laura Mercier Real Flawless foundation for staying power on oily skin. It isn’t as thick as DW but is similarly non dewy and IME doesn’t slide about or wear off once on.

Good shades especially if you find many companies’ shade ranges come up too yellow (looking at you NARS and Charlotte Tilbury).

MarianW2005 · 10/02/2026 18:53

I used for the first time today. Colour is awful (I wear Ecru) and my whole face and neck feels sticky. It is all over my glasses too - which was never a problem before. I have been wearing double wear since my early 20s and now in my 50s. Never felt that I was wearing foundation with the original but this I feel on my face! So sad

minnowonthesay · 10/02/2026 20:10

@MarianW2005 go back to store and change it, they’ll do it for free. It comes with a sponge now, my Esyee Lauder lady said she applies with a buffing brush and then dabs with the sponge . As an aside, it’s been advertised on Channel 4 tonight during one of those but a holiday in the sun programmes - target audience?

Anjelika · 10/02/2026 20:28

Well having worn the new formula for a day I can't say I like it. It's been on for over 12 hours now and still feels sticky to the touch. I've been to work (in an office) and went for a run when I got home.

Even before the run there was nothing left on my nose. Usually at the end of the day even after exercise my blusher is still firmly in place and my cheeks look like they did in the morning but not with this new version. It doesn't hold my blusher or eye makeup in place like the old one. I am gutted. Tempted to try Mac Studio Fix or alternatively I have a Huda Beauty foundation which is empty now so I must have liked it quite a lot. It certainly has the staying power of DW. It will be interesting when I remove my make-up later to see how much difference there is in the amount of product removed.

TeaRoseTallulah · 10/02/2026 20:29

Just tried to buy some Sheer and can't find any ,everything is out of stock. I'm so upset, what's the alternative to Sheer now, anyone know? FFS I've been wearing DW for years,it's the only stuff that works for me 😭

Bougainsillier · 10/02/2026 20:37

I’m expecting a new ‘sheer’ any time as it’s out of stock everywhere. I’ve abandoned DW in my old age in favour of sheer.. altho futurist skin tint is ok too. If anyone wants an almost new pebble they can have mine

Bougainsillier · 10/02/2026 20:39

It has a pump too!

Sofachick6 · 10/02/2026 20:42

Fuck, it’s not as good is it? I wore it all day today, I don’t feel like it’s invincible like it used to be. Definitely a lighter shade than it should be too. I’m off on holiday this week, I’ll soon find out how it copes - the old formula I used to wear for even underwater photoshoots!

ThatGladTiger · 10/02/2026 20:57

NellyDElephant · 05/02/2026 09:52

I second the Futurist as a glowy replacement for DW! I’m 42 so maybe a little less oily than in my younger years, I still use a decent setting spray and it gives a lovely finish. I’ve had multiple people compliment & ask me what I use on my skin - so it must look ok, I hope!

What setting spray do you use?

TeaRoseTallulah · 10/02/2026 21:49

I've been looking at dupes and L'Oréal serum foundation is apparently a dupe for DW Sheer. We'll see.

Mydahliasareshit · 10/02/2026 22:03

But...we're not in the EU any more. Why can't we have the version we love?

Fluperson · 10/02/2026 22:41

Hate it too. Sticky and more orange than my usual shade. It departed my nose by the end of the day too and was shiny on, like a gel look, not matt. I ordered online so can't send it back but it's a waste of £30+, it was unwearable.

rosiebr · 10/02/2026 22:53

I moved to Dior Forever Matte Foundation from DW. Will never look back. I top with bare minerals powder for oiliness.

I'd email estee Lauder and complain, more than likely they'll refund, they want your custom.

Fluperson · 10/02/2026 23:23

I bought it from Look Fantastic. Just annoyed really at how bad it actually is. I don't have enough old formula to last me while I seek our a new foundation either.

minnowonthesay · 10/02/2026 23:58

I bought mine from Next online, Estée Lauder aren’t refunding me but they’re sending a new bottle that is the right shade., that was organised today. Definitely go on the Estée Lauder live chat, they’ll compensate you if you can show the invoice for the new foundation from Lookfantastic.

BeeHive909 · 11/02/2026 02:44

I’ve also bought one from look fantastic. So annoyed. It’s been my go to for years for my acne prone skin and this one is crap. I hate finding new foundations as I’m so pale I look orange in most.

Mydahliasareshit · 10/02/2026 22:03

But...we're not in the EU any more. Why can't we have the version we love?

Because it's made in Belgium & we're not their only - or their biggest - market?

And because the changes made are beneficial to both the environment & humans. Cyclic silicones have been removed/greatly reduced in products as they've been discovered, at the levels that had been used, to potentially disrupt our endocrine/reproductive systems, as well as accumulate in the water supply.

And on a purely cosmetic level, they can trigger sensitivities & cause blockage of pores/acne. But I think that's the least concerning thing about them ...

Fluperson · 11/02/2026 07:31

I welcome the fact they change the formula if it was unsafe. But I'm just frustrated that it is completely different - the finish is shiny and tacky. It took me a long time to scrub it off my face with hot cloth cleanser too, and I could feel it on my face all day. I will try their chat, thank you for that advice, at least I may be sent a better colour that I can mix with the old formula ai have left until You can find a replacement. What colour did they send you as a replacement minnow? I is ally wear Ecru in the old formula but I suppose it was always a teeny bit pinker than I'd like. Cool Bone was too yellowy on me.

DesparatePragmatist · 11/02/2026 07:52

Just read the full thread in horror. I've been using DW for 30 years, now mid 50s, and its the only thing that looks good and doesn't irritate my dry, sensitive skin. Shit shit shit. I'm another Pale Almond. Had no idea this was happening so have missed the chance to stock up and from the experiences on here it doesn't seem tgat spending loads on the new version is going to be a good idea. Sigh. Most of the thread is oily skinned people - any recommended full coverage foundation for dry?

I think the Armani silk one is recommended for dry skin? Also NARS Longwear.

DW is usually recommended for oily skin though, perhaps you’re not as dry as you think if it works for you (or maybe you layer up moisture underneath)
