Hair change too drastic. Wtf have I done?

MissMuffot · 23/01/2026 13:39

I know it's just hair and it will grow back. That was my reasoning for doing it in the first place. I have a lot going on and I was just not washing my hair or taking care of it properly.

It was about 6 to 8 inches past my shoulders and dyed red. I couldn't keep up with the maintenance of it
And I felt like I had too much going on in my life to deal with such long hair.

After watching too many youtube videos, I decided to give myself a bob which obviously went very wrong and I ended up at the hairdresses. He decided that a pixie (between a bob and pixie) would be god for me and low maintenance, but he's basically just giving me a pixie with a fringe.

With my red hair, I was getting Sharon Osbourne vibes. So I try to put a brown dye over the top but it didn't take at all! so I ended up using a black dye I had in my bathroom.

So now I have Kris Kardashian vibes.

I just hate it so much. It's too dark for me.And I feel like all my femininity has gone.

I feel Ive aged myself 15 years.

I have a schwarzkopf colour remover on the way to try and get the black out.

I feel so stupid, my confidence has dropped. My kids were shocked.

DH keeps saying it looks 'cute'but I know he loved my long hair and I can just tell he doesn't really like it but he is absolutely teying to reassure me 🤣

Oh lord. Why did I do it??? 🤣😭😭

I think your new hair cut and colour both look fab. I find with these things it’s much more about how you feel about it than how you look. It’s like the way you can feel absolutely shit in an outfit you know you’ve felt good in before, when you’re not in a good place mentally. It’s not the clothes/hair. I’m so pleased you’re feeling better about it now.

WhitePudding · 25/01/2026 08:33

There’s a woman on Facebook called Caroline Shops, she wears wigs, some are really bright but she does have a good selection of more natural ones and tells you where to buy them from. I’m sure a few of us could chip in a couple of quid to help you by one.

Sorry I read this yesterday and only thought about things overnight. I’ve now seen your picture and it looks fab!

BusterGonad · 25/01/2026 08:41

That haircut is absolutely stunning. It makes me want to go short again. I know we can't see your face but I can imagine it, and I bet you look beautiful. I'm actually pretty envious right now.

TryingToFindMyStyle · 25/01/2026 08:49

That style is super cute and I actually love the colour. Any major change is always a shock until you get used to it.

Menopausalchunk · 25/01/2026 09:57

I did something similar the year I turned 50! Came home my husband loved it, I had short hair when I met him. Kids hated it and said well you won’t do that again.
fast forward a year my hair is healthier, thicker and I have had a few different hairstyles, lob, blunt bob and now a longer style with layers.
All things I would never have tried if I didn’t chop it off initially.
I think it looks great, healthy and shiny!
Hope you feel better soon

BlueStrips · 25/01/2026 15:52

Shave it off and get yourself a wig. Find someone who can lay it properly and teach you how to do it.

BlueStrips · 25/01/2026 15:53

Actually ignore my pp because I’ve just seen the photo and it looks great.

MissMuffot · 25/01/2026 16:52

I know everyone told me not to but I used the colour off 😅😅

I had a lovely hairdresser PM me and explain the schwarzkopf colour off is a lot more gentle than the eggy smelling ones you get in boots etc and its what a lot of salons use to remive colour.

She told me it would go orange, (it did)and if I was happy to still lean into the red tones for a while a light brown will cover it with red tones but probably go darker than the box.

She also told me to put an over night conditioner in after lifting and not to dye for 24 hours.

All was correct and I am so much happier with it.
Its not dry at all either.
It's much closer to my natural hair and will be easier to deal with going forwards (my aim is to leave it a few months to grow a little, so i have a good amount of root then go to a salon for them to colour match to my roots and then stop colouring my hair) Even though I have a lot of Grey, i am just going to embrace the grey!

That colour looks great.

Shouldbedoing · 25/01/2026 18:15

That is a cute and funky cut.

Dogladycrazy · 25/01/2026 19:05

OP I think your short cut would look fab with a headband such as the ones at One Hundred Stars 💕 hope you get used to it soon xx

StasisMom · 25/01/2026 21:40

I like the cut and the colour looks lovely!

Jack80 · 26/01/2026 08:50

It looks nice, try and stop beating yourself up. You will get useful to it and look on YouTube to style it. I have had short and longer pixie cuts and now it between a pixie and a bob and it's getting annoying and would be easier to cut it but I'm persevering. It will grow back.

smoothieooo · 26/01/2026 10:55

If it's any consolation, I made a snap decision to get a haircut on Friday. I lost my hair to chemo last year and it's been growing 'out' rather than down (and I'm not used to the curls). I asked for a pixie cut and was given literally a short, back and sides. But having had no hair, and knowing it will grow back, I just sighed inwardly, said thanks and left a tip! 😆

Gossipisgood · 26/01/2026 14:33

Your reaction is totally normal when you go from one hairstyle to a dramatic change of style & colour, but it looks lovely on the photo & I'm sure you'll get used to the new look. Embrace the change & enjoy it. It'll grow back & you'll wish it was shorter again once you realise how low maintenance it is.

I remember when I was about 16 I went upstairs with mousy brown hair & came back down with peroxide yellow, permed hair that at the time I used to back tat! My Mums reaction was priceless, she never said a word but her face said it all & she warned my Sister not to say anything to me when she saw me later that day. Luckily for me my hair grows super fast & I put another dye over the top a few weeks later to calm it down a bit & had the perm straightened & cut out. It didn't stop me from experimenting again though & I've had pink, burgundee & blue hair since.

I don't really wear make up, I feel daft if I do. I just wear mascara, a liquid eyeliner (catseye) and blush.

Thanks for the calming replies.

I actually feel a lot better now.

I think you look adorable! I can't see your face but your hair is actually quite cute!

If it makes you feel better, or will bring a smile to you, I'll tell you a little story.

One day, on Halloween, I decided to dye my sun-bleached hair back to medium brown. Except I used ash brown. I got done and didn't really look at my hair. My sister (10 years younger), came out all dressed up as I was taking her Trick or Treating. She says, with awe, "You are wearing a costume too? Be a witch because green hair would be a cool witch!". I ran into the bathroom and yes, my hair was green. VERY green. I missed worked the next day, and my Mom, feeling bad for me, took me to the hairdresser to get it all toned down. It STILL had a green tinge to it that was noticeable, but I kept using Prell shampoo, and it finally turned to mostly dark brown. By the time I got married, 6 months later, it looked pretty dang good. Kind of.

Then there was the time I got tired of plucking my brows and decided to try Nair on them........

The time I got a perm for my 10-year reunion, and they screwed it up and tried to cover it up by styling my hair into a BOUFFANT, like the 50's-60's. Another place fixed it enough to make it look good for the reunion.

We all mess up. Be easy on yourself.

I actually think this looks fab! Cute and cool - I love the fringe and the colour is great. It's probably just a bit of a shock having such a big change? Try playing with it (texture spray, curling it, side part etc.) to see what different looks you can get. There are some great short hair styles you can do with clips - check on Instagram and Pinterest.

That cut looks awesome. So, so cute. I bet you look gorgeous so embrace it as a new change, albeit a temporary one. Xx

It looks cool! I really like it. Not just saying that either. The fringe is done really well and the long bits at the front are youthful. I think in a week you’ll feel better about it, you just need to get used to it.
