Hair change too drastic. Wtf have I done?

I know it's just hair and it will grow back. That was my reasoning for doing it in the first place. I have a lot going on and I was just not washing my hair or taking care of it properly.

It was about 6 to 8 inches past my shoulders and dyed red. I couldn't keep up with the maintenance of it
And I felt like I had too much going on in my life to deal with such long hair.

After watching too many youtube videos, I decided to give myself a bob which obviously went very wrong and I ended up at the hairdresses. He decided that a pixie (between a bob and pixie) would be god for me and low maintenance, but he's basically just giving me a pixie with a fringe.

With my red hair, I was getting Sharon Osbourne vibes. So I try to put a brown dye over the top but it didn't take at all! so I ended up using a black dye I had in my bathroom.

So now I have Kris Kardashian vibes.

I just hate it so much. It's too dark for me.And I feel like all my femininity has gone.

I feel Ive aged myself 15 years.

I have a schwarzkopf colour remover on the way to try and get the black out.

I feel so stupid, my confidence has dropped. My kids were shocked.

DH keeps saying it looks 'cute'but I know he loved my long hair and I can just tell he doesn't really like it but he is absolutely teying to reassure me 🤣

Oh lord. Why did I do it??? 🤣😭😭

I was just hoping to strip back the colour to put a medium brown over it.

Try washing lots with Head and Shoulders- it’s well known to fade colour quickly

I don't really wear make up, I feel daft if I do. I just wear mascara, a liquid eyeliner (catseye) and blush.

Thanks for the calming replies.

I actually feel a lot better now.

That’s one sexy hair do you are rocking there.
Don’t do another thing to it.

I like it op.. i think it looks cute and trendy. Love the way the layer frames your face. Xx

Sunflower1650 · 23/01/2026 19:39

I’ve seen your photo and that’s actually a really nice cut - edgy yet soft and feminine at the same time. I really like it. I like the colour too.

Because I had a mental breakdown a few months ago and i was getting matted from not not washing/brushing/drying it properly. And it hurt brushing the mats out

Why didn’t your husband help you?!

Sasha07 · 23/01/2026 19:44

I think it frames your face nice! And you've got a nice ear shape (weird compliment, I know 🤣) so the whole look does look good. I'm blonde and tried to go brunette 'for a change ' and my lorrrrrd, I couldn't get it back to blonde fast enough! So I know how much a big change can freak us out!

Just try to relax, it's a huge change for you BUT remember why you did it. It won't last forever but it's going to give you abit of grace for now. No more matts and knots to fight on with.

Perhaps frame it as part of your healing process, nothing is easy while you're going through it, this is one part of your problem gone, as it grows back and while you find yourself again, you'll be in a better state of mind to choose a style more fitting to how you feel then. I don't see the Kris Jenner thing, I wouldn't ever have thought that if I passed you in the street. You'll get through this panic stage with your hair, just like you'll get through your rough patch. You've got this, keep your chin up 💐

Hellohelga · 23/01/2026 19:46

Scrape back into pony tail, clips for fringe, headband. Or beanie over everything.

Leatherdoughnut · 23/01/2026 19:47

It’s a beautiful colour, I wish I was brave enough to have my hair cut short in a proper style like yours. It’s lovely.

Evidemment · 23/01/2026 19:47

Just to let you know OP - people aren't being overly nice to spare your feelings - it actually is a lovely cut, very feminine and your colouring means it looks right on you. I am also surprised by the amount of colour depth you have as its not just aggressive box black. Looks like you've ended up with a fab colour and cut via a bit of a traumatic path to get there!

I get it though - I was platinum blonde/grey/white for years and years and then abruptly went dark to try and help upkeep and the absolute shock to the system was awful. I was in tears thanking the hairdresser and spent the rest of the weekend in bits thinking I'd ruined my hair but it turned out it was just the shock of something I was so used to changing so drastically. Deffo send the colour remover back- good on your other half for hiding it! Sending you and your lovely hair best wishes for health, healing and peaceful times to come x

murasaki · 23/01/2026 19:49

I was expecting something awful, but it looks great! Very elfin and stylish. I'd be happy if someone could make my hair look like that!

SouthernNights59 · 23/01/2026 19:49

OMG, I was expecting something awful, but instead I think it looks lovely and it really suits you. I would give my eye teeth for hair which looked like that instead of my fluffy mess. I think you are simply struggling with the big change, just live with it for a while and hopefully you will learn to love it.

Agree with this!

LostInTheDream · 23/01/2026 19:52

I think it looks super cute and the colour looks really glossy. It's quite a young style imo. You've just given yourself a massive shock with it.

It will be lower maintenance and it will grow out to a nice looking bob quite quickly if that's what you want.

SimoneA · 23/01/2026 19:54

Wow - was expecting the worst but it looks lovely! OP, give yourself a few days to get used to it, hopefully you’ll see what we’re seeing.

endoftetherpassed · 23/01/2026 19:57

I think it's lovely. The shock of the big changes will fade. Honestly, I think it's really nice.

This looks incredible. @MissMuffot

I hope you warm to it.

Take care of yourself, try and find a budget for regular cuts otherwise it will bug you when it grows out and you might try and DIY again.

UraniumFlowerpot · 23/01/2026 20:04

Another vote for it looks lovely! It’s a big change so I get why it’s taking some time to get used to, but just leave it be for a few weeks at least and hopefully you’ll come to like it. Definitely not a disaster! When you’re feeling a bit more positive you can experiment with styling and enjoy all the extra shape and volume that short hair can give vs long.

MrsKin90 · 23/01/2026 20:08

I actually really like it op! Obviously very different from your pre cut description but looks lovely to me. Maybe a bit Demi Moore in Ghost vibes? You'll get used to it 😊

VaccineSticker · 23/01/2026 20:10

@MissMuffot love your picture. Your hair really suits you x

TheOGCCL · 23/01/2026 20:14

I think it looks nice and also that you will get used to it. I had hair like that recently and now it's a nondescript long bob and not nearly as chic. You might even find you have more confidence with less hair, that happened to me.

Matchalattecoco · 23/01/2026 20:15

I actually think it looks really cute and frames your face nicely. Not at all what I had imagined from how you’d described it.
it will grow out quick.
You could invest in a nice cap— I love wearing my cap with all the rubbish weather and it makes me feel more confident.

BeKhakiReader · 23/01/2026 20:16

Genuinely not just saying it, I think this looks really cute.

Mumofoneandone · 23/01/2026 20:17

I think it looks lovely. Can totally sympathise with a drastic haircut, as I've gone from very long to a bob because the hairdresser couldn't understand what a trim was!!
You sound like you've been through a really tough time and cutting your hair was a practical solution to make your hair manageable. Please be compassionate with yourself if you are able.
I'm going through a different sort of tough time, so sending you big hugs x

USaYwHatNow · 23/01/2026 20:17

Solidarity. I did the same in my youth at about 19 and although in hindsight it really suited me I fucking hated it. Cried for weeks, invested stupid amounts of money in dodgy clip in extensions and grew it out straight away. Got mistaken for a man by a kid which only added to my woes and the feeling that my feminity was gone. Like you I had long hair but it was to my waist. I just always felt like I had to wear more make up or dress overly girlie which wasn't and still isn't me at all.

Edited to add: just seen the photos! It's lush!!
