Hair change too drastic. Wtf have I done?

MissMuffot · 23/01/2026 13:39

I know it's just hair and it will grow back. That was my reasoning for doing it in the first place. I have a lot going on and I was just not washing my hair or taking care of it properly.

It was about 6 to 8 inches past my shoulders and dyed red. I couldn't keep up with the maintenance of it
And I felt like I had too much going on in my life to deal with such long hair.

After watching too many youtube videos, I decided to give myself a bob which obviously went very wrong and I ended up at the hairdresses. He decided that a pixie (between a bob and pixie) would be god for me and low maintenance, but he's basically just giving me a pixie with a fringe.

With my red hair, I was getting Sharon Osbourne vibes. So I try to put a brown dye over the top but it didn't take at all! so I ended up using a black dye I had in my bathroom.

So now I have Kris Kardashian vibes.

I just hate it so much. It's too dark for me.And I feel like all my femininity has gone.

I feel Ive aged myself 15 years.

I have a schwarzkopf colour remover on the way to try and get the black out.

I feel so stupid, my confidence has dropped. My kids were shocked.

DH keeps saying it looks 'cute'but I know he loved my long hair and I can just tell he doesn't really like it but he is absolutely teying to reassure me 🤣

Oh lord. Why did I do it??? 🤣😭😭

(Using dictation if nay mistakes)

Shave it off and start again.
Will be a few months of short hair that you can't do anything with, but its a fresh start and it sounds like you need one.

Please don’t do this

I had a pixie cut for first time (late 40s) a couple years ago after only having long hair. I’m now growing it again. I found it very convenient though the summer. However, keeping it nice takes more hairdresser trips and I didnt feel like ‘me’ even though it looked fine. I’m growing it now and going through the transition stages and approaching it as an experiment even though it’s i. A bit of a dodgy stage right now.

Ah yes Been There Done That with a Pixie Cut .

When my DD was a baby , my hair was short , easier to manage I thought . But it did need cut every 5 weeks . It could go from Yeah that looks fine to Aaargh in the space of a week and I'd need to go in and get it cut .

When it grew out , you go through the Justin Bieber stage where it looks fine when it's washed with some gel , but quickly goes rogue .
Hats , hair grips , headbands . Everything gets thrown at it .

When I get it cut , I sometimes think "Oh should I go for a short cut this time " but I remind myself I really don't have the inclination for 4-5 week trims

wrongthinker · 24/01/2026 20:51

Ooh I love it, OP! It looks really cool!

Second the idea of headbands/scarves/clips to give you a flash of colour around your face. I expect it probably takes a bit of getting used to such a big change, but it is lovely!

LilySLE · 24/01/2026 20:59

clip the fringe back with some funky hair clips. Or pop a headband in? Or fabric band?

I’m sorry to hear about your struggles and I don’t know how you looked before but there’s nothing wrong with the colour or the hair cut on your photo - it does look cute 🥰 (it will look absolutely normal for strangers, I’m sure people around you will understand ❤️)
my thoughts for the future (speaking from someone who goes to hairdresser twice a year and dyes hair at home)
I’m not sure why people think that short hair is low maintenance? I found exactly shoulder length hair the lowest maintenance length and had different lengths in my life from up to chin bob/ failed pixie cut to waist length
I have very weird wavy hair that doesn’t look nice unless you wash it every day 🤷🏻‍♀️ or blow dry/style it in the morning- which I just don’t have time to do with my job
With shoulder length you can just do a pony tail if you can’t be bothered and you can get away with going for a hair cut every 6 months if no money 😂 or get experienced friends to just trim your ends
if you are struggling with washing and brushing- you can also braid (or get someone to braid) you hair - this will keep it more fresh, tidy and tangle free for a day or two - just tip for the future

Mumofsmallies · 24/01/2026 21:11

Love it!! Keep it as is!

PixieDust91 · 24/01/2026 21:34

If it bothers you that much, go to a quality stylist tomorrow morning and tell them to fix it, and let them do what they have to.

I learned years ago not to touch my own hair. Sorry you are going through this but it's an easy fix!

You should share before and after pictures lol

I don't really wear make up, I feel daft if I do. I just wear mascara, a liquid eyeliner (catseye) and blush.

Thanks for the calming replies.

I actually feel a lot better now.

I just saw the pic with your hair and I think it looks cute! I don't think you need another hair session and just grow it out for a few weeks. The length won't bother you in a few days once you get used to it.

Hair bobble?!????

Christwosheds · 24/01/2026 22:36

Aah OP don’t worry. I am another one who chopped all mine off and dyed it a strange brown.. I had it very, very short once. A close crop all over, and actually that was extremely liberating. It’s just hair, it grows and it is good to have chopped it all off at least once in your life. In the pic yours looks lovely actually, so leave the black for a while, it will fade slightly over time and you can decide what to do re the colour while it grows. Just condition it a lot.

Hats: you can be feminine, fun, quirky, sophisticated…. Change your look daily depending upon how you feel!

Ehmmm don't think you can get away with wearing a hat at work?

Darlingstarlings · 24/01/2026 22:58

From what you had written I was expecting it to be terrible but I think it's really pretty and the colour suits you. It is just an extreme change for you and will take time to get used to. Give it a few days and you will find it liberating,

ThrowingDi · 24/01/2026 23:04

I think just lean into the Kris Jenner vibes. She’s not unattractive, her whole look is to channel a certain energy and persona that gets her taken seriously in business. So it’s not “pretty” or “sexy” feminine hair, but the kind of hair that might make your face fit more in certain environments. Pretty much every senior director in my company has short hair like this.

RichardOnslowRoper · 24/01/2026 23:12

I like your hair. I like a pixie. Absolutely no need to do anything but wait.

spiderlight · 24/01/2026 23:24

I think it looks gorgeous. So shiny! It's a shock because it's such a big change, though - I get it. Don't do anything drastic. It will fade, by which time you'll be used to the shorter length, and then you can decide what to do about the colour with a calmer head.

Can I just say, from what I can see, this is cute AF on you (suits your face shape) and looks really young/trendy. I am certainly not getting Kris Jenner vibes!

I can't see your full face obviously OP but this isn't disastrous. You have lovely straight hair and I like the fringe.

SwimMum1 · 24/01/2026 23:46

Oh Op, I have been there. Glad you're now embracing it. It looks good in the photo. My mistake was when I was in my early 20's and honestly was far worse than yours. I had just come out of a relationship with an older guy who was emotionally very abusive and I had extremely low self esteem and was suffering from depression (how hard is it that we make these mistakes when we are already feeling at our lowest). I bleached my beautiful thick wavy dark brown hair blonde. I guess I very misguidedly thought if I was a blonde he wouldn't have treated me that way. First attempt wasn't too bad with added ash blonde hair dye. The problem was it wasn't blonde enough. I kept bleaching it. My hair pretty much rotted off. I ended up with a short frazzled bob that looked awful and definitely did not suite my colouring or face shape. I ended up having to dye it back to my natural colour. My self esteem was lower than ever. I was left with my original colour, but a length that really didn't suite me and the condition was now terrible. For me though, my hair grew back quicker than rebuilding my mental health. Try and focus on that and the fact you have a family that love you.

Shellythesnail2333 · 24/01/2026 23:47

I think it looks lovely, more softer than i
imagined. It should grow out nicely length wise. Colour not bad either, looks healthy and shiny. I thought it was going to be a v short kris Jenner severe do!

That is not at all what I was expecting. In a good way
I think it looks like a great cut and I really like it.
Keep in mind that people are going to react to the fact that it is such a drastic change, which does NOT necessarily reflect that they view it negatively at all.

Changingtimes81 · 25/01/2026 00:43

I think it looks lovely. Although we're not seeing your face I imaging given the general shape of your face shown that it really really suits you

JollyGreenSleeves · 25/01/2026 06:48

It looks really lovely, dark brown rather than black and it looks healthy too- definitely don’t ruin it by trying to strip the colour. Really suits your face shape and skin tone.

Sorry some folk are being bell ends- that’s life!

andfinallyhereweare · 25/01/2026 07:39

Very lily allen vibes (this is a compliment) I’m sorry you’ve been so down. I know how much hair can affect confidence. From the pic it looks lovely.

Familyvalues80 · 25/01/2026 07:41

It’s gorgeous! I was expecting a mess of uneven dye, but it’s perfect! Stunning! I think it’s just a shock and you’ll grow to love it!
