Hair change too drastic. Wtf have I done?

MissMuffot · 23/01/2026 13:39

I know it's just hair and it will grow back. That was my reasoning for doing it in the first place. I have a lot going on and I was just not washing my hair or taking care of it properly.

It was about 6 to 8 inches past my shoulders and dyed red. I couldn't keep up with the maintenance of it
And I felt like I had too much going on in my life to deal with such long hair.

After watching too many youtube videos, I decided to give myself a bob which obviously went very wrong and I ended up at the hairdresses. He decided that a pixie (between a bob and pixie) would be god for me and low maintenance, but he's basically just giving me a pixie with a fringe.

With my red hair, I was getting Sharon Osbourne vibes. So I try to put a brown dye over the top but it didn't take at all! so I ended up using a black dye I had in my bathroom.

So now I have Kris Kardashian vibes.

I just hate it so much. It's too dark for me.And I feel like all my femininity has gone.

I feel Ive aged myself 15 years.

I have a schwarzkopf colour remover on the way to try and get the black out.

I feel so stupid, my confidence has dropped. My kids were shocked.

DH keeps saying it looks 'cute'but I know he loved my long hair and I can just tell he doesn't really like it but he is absolutely teying to reassure me 🤣

Oh lord. Why did I do it??? 🤣😭😭

I loved having a pixie cut, it was genuinely really easy

Nelly91 · 23/01/2026 21:47

I think it looks stunning!!! Leave it and you might start to think so xx

Spacetours · 23/01/2026 21:53

OP you have had a tough time and are still struggling to be kind to yourself. That hair looks fab - I was imagining a disaster but that is great. Honestly I could show you some of my disasters! I am always cutting my own hair - it grows:) I do find I wear a bit more makeup with shorter hair - might help you find your vibe with it too?

I lost my girl to cancer.

I’d rather have you alive and hairless than hair-full and gone any ol’ day.

I wish I could express to you how happy I am that you’re here to talk to us today. I don’t think I could put it into words.

I’m sending you EVERY BIT OF MY LOVE wherever you are in the world today and every day.

Please never stop fighting for other cancer patients and never stop spreading the love ❤️

—Dream

Thank you for your good wishes. I'm so sorry for your loss x

Mumtobabyhavoc · 23/01/2026 21:59

The cut and colour look fine. 😊
Please don't apply any other products to try and correct it.
Your OP cracked me up though!

Bumcake · 23/01/2026 22:01

I think you’re just a bit a shocked, it looks lovely and I hope you see that in a day or two.

MissMuffot · 23/01/2026 22:27

Thankyou so much. I am feeling so much more relaxed about it now. I've ordered some clips washed my hair 7 times with head and shoulders tonight 😅

Those people that mentioned Winnona Ryder may have saved my sanity, I love her!

Does anyone know of a sort of wax to help direct the hair as its sort of doing what it wants right now and coming forwards. Nothing really thick?

Your hair looks a lovely colour and I love the cut. You made it sound horrendous, lol. Glad to hear you have stopped beating yourself up now. It will soon grow, but you never know you might find you really like it when you are used to it. Take care.

Calm down on the washing, it looks great, and overwashing isn't good for it, it looks in great condition now. Rock the winona vibe

Thank you so much - but I assure you that your being here - and every cancer survivor being here - brings me more joy than I thought that I could ever imagine.

You can thank me by continuing to thrive. ❤️

Deal?

I don't really wear make up, I feel daft if I do. I just wear mascara, a liquid eyeliner (catseye) and blush.

Thanks for the calming replies.

I actually feel a lot better now.

I think that looks adorable, and believe me, I never normally use that word, it's only for special occasions! I wouldn't call it pixie exactly, the French have a word for it; gamine, which I think fits well and is a huge compliment. People spend fortunes trying to get that look.
You have obviously given yourself a shock with such a dramatic change but that shock will fade and hopefully you will start to like it. You were very wise to think of going for a more easily maintained look, it took the whole of lockdown growing out some really bad over processing of my hair to convince me that lower maintenance was the way. I have not regretted it one bit.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/01/2026 01:09

CalmGreenEagle · 23/01/2026 14:09

I can't fathom why you made 4 fuckups to your hair in quick succession.

Not sure why long dyed red hair is that much high maintenance either.

RTFT. OP hasn't been feeling well.

OceanSafari · 24/01/2026 01:25

It looks great! Colour doesn't look harsh at all and the style is cute!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 24/01/2026 06:59

When I was 17 I cut off one side of my long growing out perm after I had a cut where I thought someone laughed at me in the street. My DM took me to a good hairdressers who cut it into a wedge layered cut and my NDN did home highlights on it for me. My friends were all surprised at how good it looked. I used lots of colourful eye makeup and lipstick so I wouldn’t be taken for a boy and I just grew my hair and was patient. In a few months I had enough colour for an Emily Lloyd perm à la the film Wish You Were Here. When it finally grew to the length I wanted I did experiment (perm, highlights) but nothing drastic!

I second maybe visiting a hair academy, they’re slow but being trained. Or just save up for a really good cut and colour.

LumpySpaceCow · 24/01/2026 08:29

No advice but I think it looks great OP!

Back in the late 90s my friends with straight hair who had that sort of cut used Dax- they do a light in a blue tin and a heavier one that’s red.

I asked Copilot recently what product to buy to get the look I wanted on my particular hair, and it advised me and I’ve been really pleased so far.

Iheartmysmart · 24/01/2026 08:56

I think you look stunning @MissMuffot The cut and colour really suits you. I use Slick Gorilla hair powder on my pixie crop as I find the waxes and styling pastes too heavy for my fine hair. The powder gives definition without looking greasy or heavy. Wishing you all the best for your continued recovery 💐

Well, I was imagining it to be way way worse! I don't know you before the cut, but it looks like a fantastic cut! It was just a shock to have a change, but it's a lovely cut. Honestly xx

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 24/01/2026 09:59

@MissMuffot i agree with PP’s. Nice colour and cut, looks reminiscent of the singer Sharleen Spiteri to me a bit! Looks very nice. I also had a mental health breakdown and was in a psychiatric hospital this time last year so I empathise with you. Sending you best wishes for a good recovery. flowers

Deal. Mine's in remission and I've got a lot to live for.

Elfie23 · 24/01/2026 10:19

Try using head and shoulders shampoo, it strips out the colour - a few washes and hopefully it’ll tone down a bit and you’ll end up a darker shade of red I should imagine x

As you said it is hair and it will grow, maybe experiment with make up for a new look? Leave the hair though, you might start to like it xx

Idontthinkicandothisanymore · 24/01/2026 11:16

It look super cute. You definitely carry it off

Notjustabrunette · 24/01/2026 11:21

PatsFishTank · 23/01/2026 13:55

You'll get used to it and it will grow.

I'm currently bald from chemo and likely to be for some time so it's all relative.

I’m 10 weeks out from finishing chemo. Hair is coming through nicely. A bit grey, but I think in another month or so will have an actual hair style.

SkelatorIamNot · 24/01/2026 13:32

I’ve been there OP, changing your hair feels like it will fix everything, it’s something you can control.

Get some cute feminine headbands and experiment with false lashes or earrings to distract. Your hair will grow back soon enough.

I hope you are feeling better soon!

SkelatorIamNot · 24/01/2026 13:34

Just seen your picture, your hair looks lovely!
