Tartan? In Scotland? Groundbreaking!

Tartan? In Scotland? Groundbreaking!

Yes, I think that was always going to be a fairly safe bet! 😁

It's a very pretty colour.

Maireas · 20/01/2026 14:49

I like the cut and colour, but would have preferred it to be a block colour.

I wish I was tall and slim and could borrow that coat. The kelpies are indeed beautiful.

Maireas · 20/01/2026 15:43

The Kelpies are worth a visit, they're so impressive.

They then went curling. Happy to see it being promoted, as I have curled a bit in the past. Its a fun sport. Also happy to see they changed shoes, don't fancy getting on the ice in high heels, even if they are block heels! The ice master would also shout at them. Don't like Kate's sleeveless cardi that you can see in one picture. Like her tartan coat though

They both look like they've got good action, though! You have to be flexible.

It is nice to see it promoted, as you say, @Chesticles .

I love the Kelpies, nice to see the pictures of Will and Kate there. If I got down that low in the curling position I probably couldn't get up again without an undignified scramble.

chesterelly1 · 20/01/2026 16:59

The coat is a lovely blue check, but not actually tartan. Nice to see something new. Lots of “nods” to Scotland without being too shortbread tin, the coat, the pattern on the waistcoat (or sweater vest), the longer skirt with the pleating and kilt buckles. Big thumbs up from me. I love the video at the tartan weaving best, where Catherine is getting stuck in and William is standing back holding her coat.

bluegreygreen · 20/01/2026 17:59

Love the coat (my colours!) and the fact that Catherine worked with Johnstons of Elgin on the fabric. Do also like the detail in the waistcoat (Fair Isle?).

justasking111 · 20/01/2026 18:13

I can't see any details of the skirt. The pictures on the internet are very dark. Buckles pp said?

Yes I was looking for the same but found no skirt photos. Can people post photos please. Or links.

chesterelly1 · 20/01/2026 18:51

Screenshot from X skirt is cashmere from Johnstone’s of Elgin who also made the coat. I think from the videos I’ve seen that it wraps like a kilt and has kilt style buckles at the hip. Catherine worked with them to design the coat fabric will it be registered as a new PoW tartan

She reminds me of how my English teacher used to dress back in the 80s. I think Claudia Winkleman does Celtic chic much better.

Claudia is very intentionally styled as “edgy modern Scottish Gothic” though. That’s not a realistic option for a conservative professional work look, and where edgy is not remotely Catherine’s style.

(also love the Kelpies. And the Falkirk Wheel!)

Yes. Quite different situations.

Love Kate's coat, skirt, jumper&boots. Not a fan of the waistcoat, but she overall looks fabulous!
I really love how animated and enthusiastic she looks on an engagement. Kudos for getting stuck in to all sorts and she looks fantastic in action!
Lovely photo of Will&Kate together - very elegant.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 21/01/2026 05:56

I’m glad to read that she’s starting promoting British clothing and working with wool producers. She wears very little wool, except in her coats, which I think is a shame given how good British wool can be. and it’s surely better for the environment than polyester.

HollyhockDays · 21/01/2026 07:27

She looked good. A nod to Scotland without going overboard. I loved the knitted waistcoat.

justasking111 · 21/01/2026 08:43

I'd be terrified of owning a £900 cashmere skirt. My track record with woollen garment care is sketchy 🙈

I hadn’t realised she’d worn the lotus flower tiara. That’s a nice tiara.
And that’s reminded me of the horror of her wedding - the bizarre tiara, and that pearl necklace that looked like it was made from plastic beads by a child.

Maireas · 22/01/2026 15:22

I like the tiara with the halo effect, that's very pretty.
