I need a dressing gown that doesn't look like a dressing gown

I am WFH atm and like to get up, put on dressing gown, have coffee, get down to work at my PC. And two hours later I might still be working, but am still in my dressing gown and it doesn't feel right.

Can the hive mind find me a sort of "in between" dressing gown? Preferably black, but not too fussed about colour. Plus I am always on the hunt for different dressing gown styles, so even if it doesn't fit this bill I'm open to suggestions!

I can't visualise what you mean.
Would you not be better off wuth some form of ' loungewear'? Like a sweatshirt and joggers/ cashmere hoody and yoga pants type thing?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 24/09/2025 10:48

I’ve got a few Kantha robes that fit this brief - used as dressing gowns but could easily be a light weight coat. Toast used to do them but very expensive - can be bought from Etsy for much less. I’ve also a couple of the waffle robes from VioletElizabeth, lovely quality and warm with the waffle inner.

I can't visualise what I mean either, which is why I'm after some help 😆

I like the length of, say, a knee-length DG in the winter, don't want to get up and into joggers straight from bed.

A very long hoodie maybe? Something like

How about a cape/ poncho / woolover type of thing? Can pop on over PJs but wouldn't be embarrassed to open the door to the postman at lunchtime wearing it!!

Clockstops · 24/09/2025 10:58

It doesn't feel right because it's not right 🤣

I have a hooded sweatshirt dress that's easy to wear after a late shower but makes me feel "dressed".

Ooh, that's the longest one I've seen!

Slightly wondering why you don’t just get dressed tbh. Not sure I’d want to be on work calls in my PJs

Perhaps a coatigan? Warmer and longer than a cardigan and in a knit or jersey so it’s warm but still smart enough for an unexpected call.

This has been known to happen 😳

I'm not on work calls. Just doing stuff at my PC. And I like getting straight out of bed rather than getting dressed, iyswim.

ETA: Ooh, a coatigan... I think my mistake was starting with "dressing gown".

I wear a thin fleece jacket. Something like Recycled Microfleece Jacket at Cotton Traders or Zip Up Fleece | Goodmove | M&S, in black or navy.

Something like Skin Soft Hooded Zip-up Fleece - Cardigan - Damart.co.uk or John Lewis Hi-Pile Oversized Lounge Hoodie would provide more coverage

i think you want a loungewear set with everything the same colour. That stuff always looks more put-together.

I have the open front version of that from last year and it’s so cosy

MellowMint · 24/09/2025 11:20

Long cardigan 🤷🏼‍♀️

Koolandorthegang · 24/09/2025 11:25

I wear a longline cardigan over a pair of pull on wide leg trousers and a longline cardigan sleeved top for working from
home most of the time. That way it’s as comfortable as pjs but I can go out to the bin/ car etc and I’m not in my pjs

UpMyself · 24/09/2025 11:29

It does. The links were to give an idea of what I meant. I think today's fleece is from a supermarket, thinnish (not borg) and plain black. it just looks black on zoom.

Hoodies are popular, Pink Longline Hoodie - Matalan. I'd probably pick a different colour (black or navy), because I'd have food and drink stains on it knowing me.

Women’s Nightwear | Cotton Pyjamas, Gowns, Camis | TOAST are beyond what I would be willing to pay, but I bought my mother a long cashmere cardigann one Christmas. IIRC it was from Poetry, and she wears it around the house in Winter.

cashmere dressing gowns

Oodie styles have been spotted in my local supermarket, but I live somewhere where some people wear pyjamas and sliders to do their shopping. (I have seen a dryrobe, but I think it was someone who was lost)

LaurelBush · 24/09/2025 11:52

Thanks all! Some great suggestions, and inspiration. Visiting delivery drivers will be so relieved 😄

I have a couple of zip up fleece jackets or zip up hoodies for this purpose. My pyjamas tend to be leggings style and cuffed at the ankles. It means I can get up, put a hoodie or fleece over the top of my pyjama t shirt and be warm.

I wouldn't go to the shops in this ensemble but for answering the door, putting out the bins etc they're fine.

UpMyself · 24/09/2025 12:35

Sounds like me @GameOfJones .Every now and then I'll wear something bright togoon zoom. The black/navy t-shirt + black/navy jacket uniform might not look like they were clean that morning.

You can tell who is in the office and who's WFH.Smile

Hdpr · 24/09/2025 14:55

I have the same set up and just wear a dressing gown for a few hours! Then change into with proper clothes or loungewear after a shower

MellowPinkDeer · 24/09/2025 15:02

If you have time to put your dressing gown on first thing why don’t you just put on some clothes? I’d hate to be at my desk in a dressing gown!!
